Dig Box

I’m curious as to what others have used to create dig boxes for their buns?

My dilemma is my newest hop, Lacey.  When we first brought her home, she literally burrowed tunnels through her extra big litter boxes.  To the point where one day I couldn’t even see her in there because she was under all the hay and litter, LOL.  (She’s really tiny.)  Anyway, she stopped when we bonded her in with the others but over the past day or two she has been back to her usual antics of absolutely destroying the litter boxes from digging.  

I’m attempting to find something to use as a box that isn’t cardboard.  My Tans are extremely destructive and have always had cardboard boxes completely destroyed within a few days.  I’m hoping to find/use something that can be around for quite awhile.  I worry about plastic because my Tans also chew on anything and everything and I’m worried they would ingest the plastic pieces.

 

Any ideas?  Also curious what things you guys have used inside your diggy house?

Hmm…you handy at all? Maybe get some rabbit safe wood and make a box?

I use lots of newspaper in my dig box, hay, and throw in a few craisins lol. Keeps em busy for hours.

Good idea! I use cardboard boxes sometimes, but I recently made a wooden nesting box. These work well, and are actually used for people that breed rabbits. I’m pretty handy, so I just used a building pattern/instructions to build it out of properly cut pieces of wood…and voila! It’s pretty easy, and most bunnies can’t move it like cardboard boxes. (That drives me CRAZY!!!) If you have stronger bunnies you can also screw it to the side of your pen.
I put newspaper scraps in it as well as raisins hidden in the bottom. I don’t use any small particles like bedding though, because my bunny pen has fleece on the bottom – Fleece + hay/bedding DOES. NOT. MIX! So hard to clean up….. It sticks to the fleece and won’t come off.

I just picked up some cat tunnels for my buns and got to thinking would something like that work as a diggy tube? Would the Tans chew at the fabric? If so, would putting a towel to chew on the bottom divert them??
I also thought a concrete form tube might work as they’re heavier duty cardboard I believe.

Wood and mdf cat hidey boxes?
Or heavy duty plastic tote with holes cut into sides and edged with binder strips?
You could even make something with NIC cubes, filll it with digging material and drap blanket over the top.

For digging material, maybe that shredded paper packaging that’s soft like newspaper.

Once I discovered how much Bumpy liked phone books, and subsequently how much I hated them just loose on the floor… I threw one inside his traveling crate. So he used that as a little dig box, until he got bored of it. Weird rabbit. I think I need to change things up for him.

So I DID read everyones suggestions, although it’s taking me a while to respond.

The Tans would definitely chew up the tunnel… I’ve thought long and hard about getting one but I KNOW they’ll eat it. They always do, not sure why I continue to try with toys like that!! LOLOLOL.

I did think about one of those concrete tube things though! We have those for them to run through at the shelter but I’ve never really known where to get them… a hardware store?

We did come up with a covered litter box with shredded newspaper along with the phonebook. Thank God, it worked! For the most part… now she only digs when she thinks her litter is too dirty! LOL.

glad that worked for you! Yes, hardware stores carry the concrete form tubes. They are pretty cheap too, especially considering how thick they are, very tough!
