My starlight has decided to become a fussy hay eater again. For awhile she would eat oxbow but all of a sudden refused and even spit out any oxbow variety, I switched to kaytee timothy but lately she’s not so interested in hay again. She is eating fine with her other food and a good amount of poop so i know she isn’t sick. So, what brand of timothy hay do youall feed your buns? I’d like to try different ones to see what she’ll like.

I actually just bought a huge bale from a local co-op, only $23 USD for 100 pounds.

If your bun doesn’t like Oxbow, try Rabbit Hole, KMS, Standlee Premium (not the compressed bales).  A lot of people swear by Small Pet Select but I’ve never had much luck with their hay.

Rabbit Hole is my favorite. I’ve used Small Pet Select, mainly because they offer a rewards program and have discounts every so often that Rabbit Hole doesn’t have, but have never been THAT impressed. I just purchased some Timothy that my buns are meh about but the Orchard Grass they’re munching on a ton.

Oxbow, in the large boxes, I’m not too fond of but is the cheapest larger box option I’ve found on Chewy. It’s hit or miss honestly. The Orchard Grass I get is always good from them, but the Timothy is back and forth.

If you’re having trouble getting bunny to eat hay though, maybe switching from Timothy to Orchard Grass or Oat for a bit or using as a mix-in could be helpful. I buy all 3 since my chinchillas need the variety but I think the rabbits get a lot of benefit from having a choice as well. Orchard Grass is softer, but when I offer with Timothy and/or Oat Hay, I think they still get the necessary stalkiness for dental health.

If you have a rescue in your region, you might ask them they sell hay. Many will buy whole bales and sell it in smaller amounts. It is usually much cheaper than pet stores and fresher!

I keep a variety of Oxbow hays on hand, but my rabbits’ favorite  hay seems to be American Pet Diner Timothy Gold.  It’s a second cutting of hay, so it’s softer, and the bags I’ve gotten have always been fragrant.  It’s sold at Petco.

I use Small Pet Select and Thor likes it better than any other brands we’ve tried (since we started SPS she won’t eat Oxbow hay we’ve gotten occasionally when a box ran out). She really likes both the 3rd cut Timmothy and the Orchard hay. We haven’t ever tried Rabbit Hole though, I will keep that one in mind!

I second asking your local rescue as well! they often have good deals and good fresh hay.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. 🙂 Starlight’s new favorites are APD timothy gold and binky bunny oat hay. I just use all the other left over hay I bought for litter and it seems to work.
