Hi everyone! I got my first bunny on Friday and I love her. She’s a little black otter Holland Lop makes Yumi, and she’s running and binkying happily everywhere. But, I have a question, to be the best bun mom I can be for her.

Along with her I bought hay and feed from the breeder because I wasn’t sure where else to do so. She gave me Timothy hay and Timothy based pellets for her. Right now I feed her 1/4 Timothy hay based pellets, 1/8 alfalfa pellets mixed in and will be transition to half soon, and then unlimited Timothy Hay. It usually takes her the whole day (so far) to get through the pellets. The question is, should I look into buying alfalfa hay? I really want her flora to have a great basis going into adult hood to help her health and fighting GI stasis, so any opinion would be welcome. On FB, a lot of bun owners say unlimited pellets but tbh I’m not sure what that means when she only goes through that amount a day!

Welcome, and congrats on your new bunny!

She only needs one source of Alfalfa, I prefer to feed Alfalfa pellets with Timothy hay as they will take switching pellets easier than switching hay when it’s time to put them on an adult diet. Young rabbits are supposed to get “unlimited” pellets, but if their food bowl is empty a few hours per day that’s fine, since you do want to make sure they also eat a decent amount of hay. 🙂

Okay thank you so much! I will keep doing that, the only issue I seem to be having is that she picks around the alfalfa pellets and just eats the Timothy. Like… Absolutely no interest 😬

That’s weird, most rabbits would do the opposite 😀  I guess it’s because she’s used to eating Timothy pellets. She’ll probably come around before long.
