I( did my bunnies nails alone for the first time yesterday, but i’m not sure if i took off enough.  I used a Peticure trimmer.  The nails come right to the edge of their fur and all the tips have been rounded off.  This is confusing.  I couldn’t locate the quick so i just took a little off each nail.

Most people just take off a bit when its just their first few times trimming nails. If your nervous, there is no problem with just taking of the tip. You may have to do it more often though to keep them from getting too long. I have on rabbit with light nails, and one with dark. Benny (the one with light nails) is easy to do, I can tell when they are getting too long and can trim them fairly close to the quick. Beans (with the dark nails), on the other hand, is more difficult. I can’t see the quick so I just trim a small amount off. I have to trim his nails more often because of this though. It’s better to have to trim them more often than to have to deal with a bleed, in my opinion. But, make sure you have some styptic powder on hand just incase. Try to find some that has pain relief in the powder, if you haven’t already.

Good luck! Don’t get to worried about anything!

Hatter has dark nails and I had to take a flashlight to them to see where the quick is. Also my nail trimmer has a “safety latch” that will only allow a little bit of the nail to be put through to be cut. It IS quite nerve racking! Luckily Hatter only needs his nails trimmed every two months. However, on Monday it’s time to cut them again…fun times for all….

If you are nervous, it is probably best that you only take off a little at a time…
