So we are moving into a new build home. I’m worried about scorpions and would like to put diatomaceous earth down around the windows and such in case one gets in. I really hope we don’t have an issue with them but just in case I would like to put something down in the beginning until we find out if we will have an issue. I read it’s all natural but I want to make sure that if Binky comes in contact with it (obviously going to keep it away from him but just in case) I want to make sure it’s safe. If it’s not I won’t put it down anywhere. I know it’s safe around dogs but I’m not sure for bunnies. Here is the link to their website. What are your thoughts?

Some people say its fine but some people say that it causes respiratory problems. If you can find something else that is more safe would probably better than taking a risk.

I think it’s a lot safer than insect-poisons, but it is a fine clay powder and thus should not be breathed in. Bunnies are of course more sensitive than humans because bunny lungs are very small.
Then again, scorpions are not exactly bunny-safe either, so you obviously need to take some measure.

It isn’t toxic. It is, however, a fine powder so it isn’t good for anyone to inhale. How are you planning to use it? Most people just sprinkle it on the carpet to kill fleas, etc. You keep bunny out of the area until it has been vacuumed.

A little on the carpet shouldn’t hurt anything, especially if you vacuum it up.

DE… fine powder… I do have some, but I haven’t used it in a while… If I feel the need to use a mask to absolutely avoid inhaling the dust, I don’t want to use it around my animals. If it is not safe for me to inhale, then it is not safe for them.

What you are describing should be fine.  As long as it isn’t where the wind will catch it.

You can also put it outside along the foundation. It should last till the next rain, which in Arizona is a pretty long time.

Breathing in clay dust can cause silicosis of the lungs, a condition that is an occupational hazard for miners and potters, road construction workers etc. It’s basically due to scarring of the lungs from breathing in small sharp particles of silica.

I’ll keep Ito the outside of the windowsills just in case
And eepster you are very correct about the rain! I think even when we get rain the clouds part around our home lol. We don’t live far enough east I suppose
