        Hey girlies,

My lionhead girly named Marshmallow has been fighting with bad diarrhea since Monday this week, I noticed we switched up their hay a little too fast but still wanted to make sure its nothing more than that. We brought them to the vet, he suspected the same and gave her some medicine and for us to continue the treatment at home. One is a paste she loves called Fibreplex and a liquid she hates called emeprid oral solution.
We have been keeping up with the treatment as long as the doctor told us which is 2-3 days with me being absolutely paranoid to inspect her poops every second.
From Tuesday till Wednesday/Thursday she had solid poops that went from almost black brown to their usual consistency and colour and we were told to give the treatment for 2-3 days so we did… and today when the diarhea came back and her bootyhole looked so irritated and inflamed, her stomach became a rock again and she was covered in her own poop.

They have been back to their normal hay, no more treats or even chewable toys just to make sure they are purely eating hay and drinking water (too young for fresh veggies).

We have already booked an emergency visit to the vet but im wondering why she’s bounced back so quickly from not having her medicine just for half a day?

I really hope its not something deadly as I’ve read online, shes active and plays with her buddy Mopsy, but maybe the treatment should’ve lasted longer?

Sorry if this is more of a rant im just confused and scared,

Thank you in advance bun owners,

To my knowledge, changing hay shouldn’t impact a rabbit so drastically. Switching hay brands and types don’t require a slow transition like introducing new foods or pellets. You mention that your vet agreed with your thoughts — what sort of evidence did the vet use to support this?

And is it true diarrhea or is it just runny poop (more indicative of lack of fiber).

In general, how much hay does Marshmallow consume? And are you feeding any pellets? I notice you mention only hay and water, but pellets would be needed for a young rabbit to ensure full nutritional support.

It can be scary to see your rabbit go through treatment, bouncing up and down in progress. Stay strong!
