› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Dexter had gas/statis again..question.
Here is Dexter’s history with statsis/gas problems.
The first time he had statsis was in 2009, second time this past March, and again lastnight
First time he was on critical care and meds. In March thanks to a very very helpful member on BB I got him infant gas drops as well as massaged his belly and fussed over him which fixed his gas problem within a few hours, same with lastnight. I will be taking him into the vet on Tuesday for his yearly check up and see if there is a problem with his digestive system. Is it common to happen so much within a few months? I haven’t changed his diet, he has his pellets in the morning and at night, fresh parsley and cilantro morning and night, and lots of water and Tim hay throughout the day as well as his willow toys. I am not sure what could be causing this to happen and it always seems to happen at his dinner time.
Has anyone else had this problem with their bunnys?
My buns haven’t had statsis before, but I have herd some rabbit just have reoccurring gas. It could be from his diet, but that’s something your vet could help you with.
Have you considered taking him totally off pellets?
I’ve had a few rabbits with recurring stasis and it’s for a number of causes. Have the vet check his teeth really well too.
He will be very mad at me if I took his pellets away but I will see if that helps lol. I will have to see what the vet says too. Hopefully we can figure this thing out soon.
Eventually he would get over it :~) I promise.
I had a bun who was prone to stasis. He got a half teaspoon of pellets in the morning and a half teaspoon of pellets in the evening (+ salads). I also gave him a variety of hay to encourage hay eating. He had dental problems too, so he got his teeth filed on a regular basis. He STILL got stasis, so he was put on daily cisapride, which helped a lot. The cisapride was a banana-flavored liquid, and he LOVED it!
Just got back from the vet with Dexter. He weights 5.8 lbs, he is a big bun
The vet said that he has a sensitive stomach so we have to put a little critical care in his pellets a few times a week. Otherwise he is very healthy. She also said that raisins can cause kidney failure, anyone else hear of that? I guess I will have to stop his raisin snackie and go back to bananas.
Raisins cause kidney failure? I’ve heard that raisins and grapes aren’t good for dogs, but I don’t know if that’s totally true.
Huh, I’ve never heard that raisins cause kidney failure. I’ve been using them as treats for years, just one per day.
I just did a quick lit search (I’m a researcher & I need empirical evidence!
), and the only thing I found for raisins was a study on chewing behavior of rabbits that used raisins as the food in the experiment.
For grapes, I found several articles that said that grapes are protective against bladder dysfunction in rabbits (e.g., Lin et al., 2005; Agartan et al., 2004). I couldn’t find anything about grapes and kidney function in rabbits, but in rats, grapes are protective against kidney failure (e.g., Giovannini et al., 2001; Durak at al., 2007). I have a hard time reconciling that with what that vet said!
I know, I don’t know what to think about it. I was giving him one or two a day for the last year. She said giving him a little piece of grape was fine though or banana which he loves. I don’t know what is in raisins that can cause kidney failure though, I thought it was just grapes and sunshine like the commercials say
She is a great exotics vet and has been treating Dexter for almost 3 years now and now my beaded dragon as well. Maybe it is something they just heard about? Who knows..
Dexter can live with bananas though, I know that for a fact lol
Stormy used to get very frequent stasis/gas episodes which varied in severity. Drastically cutting his pellets has helped a lot. Instead of him getting a meal of pellets now he just gets what my vet refers to as “a sprinkle of croutons on his salad”.
How much pellets does he get per day?
I give him about a teaspoon or a little more, it’s not much at all. I do this in the morning and then at night before he comes out to play. Also he gets parsley and cilantro day and night. He is doing fine now, I have to mix in some pellets with critical care 2 times a week. She wrote on the package to give him 3 dry tablespoons with 6 tablespoons of water mixed with his pellets but that was waaaay too much. I have to call her tomorrow morning and verify that. I did put some on a plate mixed with his pellets though and he ate it after scoping it out for a bit.
I have never heard of the raisin relationship to kidney failure issue. Next time you see your vet, could you ask her what is it about raisins that she feels causes this problem. I am certainly interested to know.
You said that your bunny seems to have gi problems every year — is it around the same time— Spring/Summer? Am I reading that right?
If so, I wonder if it has anything to do with molting. Do you notice your bunny begins to molt heavier around that time? Is your bunny a big hay eater?
I have had Dexter since he was a baby and he’s going to be 3 next month. The first time he had stasis was in 2009 and didn’t have a problem at all last year. This year he had gas problems in the beginning of March and then last month in April. Since then he has been fine. I have no clue what is causing it, but he does shed a lot around this time. He loves his hay and is constantly eating it, more so in the winter. We go through a big bag of hay once a month so he is good with his hay consumption
I have to call the vet on Monday to ask about the critical care so I can ask about the raisins too.
