Tucker seems to be growing a dewlap..i’ve noticed it I though..for a while now but then today he was sitting here sideways and I can definitely see one starting to form there…do male rabbits get dewlaps?  Or is my Tucker maybe  a girl?  He doesn’t like to be held so I’ve never sexed him…

i think males can get a small dewlap type thing, but it’s not as pronounced. i’ve never really given this much thought. has he never been to a vet for a check-up or anything?

Hmmm….well if a male has one it’s most likely because he is overweight but a true dewlap is only on females – definitely should get Tucker sexed properly from a vet if you haven’t and a check-up too.

Do all females get dewlaps? Radar has a mini one and she puffs hers up a bit sometimes when she’s cold or extra sleepy. As for the male, I agree with Sarita… I’ve only seen overweight males with dewlaps…. I suppose it’s like ‘man-boobs’ in humans.

That’s what Tucker does..he puffs it out sometimes when he’s in a butthead mood as I call it LOL..when he sits there sulking because it’s time to be back in his pen or if the dogs are rough housing outside of it and he’s not happy about it…it gets all big..but normally it’s small.

He’s not overweight anywhere else so I don’t think that’s it.

He’s had a check up at a vet around here but it was very basic…even though they said they knew how to work with rabbits I don’t think they really did and they didn’t do a very thorough sexing either…probably not anymore then I would have done at home and I know for sure that *I* don’t know what I am doing. We’re going to be taking him to get neutered (maybe spayed???) but that is an hour and a half away and we are waiting for funds to do that.

females get them if they’re not spayed. Meadow started to grow one right before she was spayed, but after the surgery it stopped. she’ll always have a small one tho.

I have a dwarf that looks just like TuckerB.  Dwarfs can get chunky very easily.  It’s my understanding that most dwarfs s/b about 3 lbs.  My Jessica is about 3 lbs 10 oz…she gained weight post spay (who am I kidding she was always a chunky monkey, she loves her treats).  So it might be a subtle weight gain.  I’m also wondering when you notice it.  My male lionhead looks like he has a dewlap when he’s in his “meatloaf” sleeping position, but not necessarily when standing or hopping.

Erbear:  Man boobs!  That’s a great way to explain it.

Tucker’s looks puffed up in meatloaf position..but when I noticed the actual definition of it was when he was sitting peering over the edge of the ottoman with his neck stretched..that’s when I saw that it was an actual little flap.
