Okay, I’m going to preface this post by saying Koda has yet to be spayed… she’s been to the vet multiple times but due to a runny nose and sneeze she just won’t get over, they won’t fix her because she is considered high risk to be put under anesthesia. Possibly be due to her hormones??? I’m really not sure. But recently she has started to demolish our furniture. I woke up this morning to a huge hole in our couch and a mischievous bunny who acted like she’d done something so I covered the huge hole and left for work. When my husband got home today he said she’d chewed another hole in the uncovered portion of the couch. The couch is cloth. Foremost I’m afraid she’ll ingest some of the stuffing and it will hurt her, secondly I’m upset about my now destroyed couch… so are there any tips on getting Buns to not chew on the couch? We’ve finally broke her from chewing on the rest of the furniture but now this… could this be hormonal?? What can I do to stop this behavior? She has so many toys to play with yet she insists on killing the couch help me!!!

It was February when you posted about her URI/allergies. What treatments/environemental modifications did you end up trying specifically, and how is her sneezing as compared from then until now? Better, worse, the same?

If it’s worse or the same, it’s not something she can get over and you need to try and find a mend, whether it be a different antibiotic (sounds like only one was tried by your vet from February) or she is getting allergies from her environment.

It’s the same she’s been to the vet 3 times since then and they don’t seem too concerned but I am. Saturday was her last dose of a different antibiotic that we tried and she’s still sneezy. I’ve done everything I can think of as far as allergens in the home to help calm her respiratory system and I just don’t know what else I can do. Her next vet apt will be her 4th one.

It took 3 months from first treatment attempt to final treatment dose for Wick to overcome his URI! It should be concerning now because it’s preventing you from getting her spayed, which is a big deal. I recommend trying another medication, and looking at her environment again. Did you change hay brand? Hay brands grow their supply in different fields so they have different allergens attached to them. Wick sneezes at Kaytee hay, but not Oxbow as much.

Medications Wick tried, in order:
1) Bactrim – 2 week course; no improvement.
2) Baytril – 2.5 months; slight improvement which plateau’d (wasn’t getting worse or better)
3) Flocillin injections – 3 weeks with Baytril still ongoing; immediate significant improvement.

She’s been eating kaytee hay since we got her. That’s the only thing we’ve found in our area but I’ll be on the lookout for another brand. I read that you could spray the hay with water to prevent the dust from getting in their noses but that didn’t seem to help. We’ve stopped burning candles and using wall plug ins as well as spraying stuff in hopes she’d change… but nothing. Next time I take her I will request an injection. Did you do that yourself?

Each antibiotic treats a different group of bacteria with some overlap. the shots ended up doing the trick with Wick while done with Baytril at the same time (we tried taking away Baytril, but sneezing came back immediately, so it had to be both).

Yes, I gave Wick the shots, once per day then eventually once every other day, then every two days. If your vet believes this is something worth doing, they should show you how to do it and help you with the first shot. Ask questions there, figure out the best holding position and test it out there. If you get the shots, feel free to post and I can offer specific advise. Not many people have done shots with their rabbits, but myself and some others can give you ideas. I personally was comfortable with it because I’m a phlebotomist so I felt ok “stabbing” Wick with a needle (honestly more nerve wracking than with humans though haha).

This may not be the case but what type of litter do you use? Paper bedding was causing my bunny respiratory issues and once we switched to wood pellets she has not sneezed even once. If there are other vets in your area you should get your bunny checked. Maybe a different vet can try something different to help your bunny.

About the destructive issues, all I can say is find away to block off the couch when you are not around to watch her.
