One of my bunnies passed away recently from an unexpected accident and her bundermate has become antisocial.

At the same time, my bunny, Butter, won’t really eat or chew on things normally either. He’ll pick at hay here and there, nibble on pellets occasionally and won’t even go for treats when offered.

Advice on what to do for a depressed bunny who recently lost his other half?

Would it be too soon to start bonding him with a rabbit at the local rabbit rescue?

          Sorry for your loss

It’s not too soon, as long as you are ready for it (as bonding can be a lot of stress and work). Sometimes bunnies accept a new mate very readily after the loss of their bonded friend, and can even benefit from having another bunny housed near them (even if they aren’t bonded yet).

In the meantime, you can try giving a stuff to snuggle with, and be sure to spend extra time with him.

Do pay close attention to his eating and pooping, as depression can send a bunny into gi stasis. Turning down treats is a big warning sign… is he eating veggies and pooping OK? If not, he should see a vet.
