Right now Desmond is on unlimited pellets because he’s only 4 months old. I fill up his pellet dish at night before I go to bed and several times durning the day, but if he runs low while I’m sleeping he’s taken to ramming his litterbox up against the bars of his crate to wake me up and fill it. For right now, I just make sure he’s got plenty of pellets to last through the night. But I’m wondering: Is this what I’m in for every night when I begin to wean him off of unlimited pellets? I was going to start to cut him back after his neuter in March. Since he lives in our bedroom my husband won’t be too keen on nightly tantrums for more pellets.
How many pellets is he getting everyday, are you measuring? Even tho guidelines say “unlimited”, you still want to know specifically what he is getting everyday. For a small bunny like him, he should not be having more than 1 cup a day at this age… and even that might be a bit much. You’ll have to start reducing the pellets very, very gradually, maybe a teaspoon less each week until he’s down to a good amount, 1/8-1/4 cup a day. AND do not give in if he starts making a ruckus.
Is he on a set schedule yet? I feed at the same time each day (approximately, within an hour or so), veggies and hay refreshed in the morning, pellets all at once and hay refreshed in the evening. I don’t think you should be giving him pellets several times thru out the day. That will make it too hard to reduce him. Just once or twice a day at the same time.
How is he with hay and veggies?

I give him 4 tbs at a time because that seemed to last him through the night until this week. I also give him another 4 tbs in the morning and usually another 4 tbs in the afternoon, so all in all he’s getting about 3/4 of a cup of pellets a day. Maybe more now that I’m giving him more at night. He doesn’t space them out throughout the day, he gobbles them all up before he goes to sleep around 11am. That’s why I feed him again when he wakes up in the afternoon. Should I maybe give him a 1/2 cup in the morning and another 1/2 cup at night? And how long do you think the ruckus will continue? I don’t want to have to move him from my bedroom. He’s very happy there.
He eats lots of hay (always available) and I just started him on veggies, he gets a small amount in the morning and evening.
They sure know how to train us humans, don’t they? LOL!
Spacing out the smaller portions more frequently might appease him somewhat, if you have the time to do it.
My bunnies have me trained too.
But they’re 8-1/2 and 6-1/2 so it’s not quite as much commotion as often. Your boy (and a handsome one he is, too, btw) is young and full of energy. It might last till he’s 1 or 2, but should taper off too during that time. You’ll get to know each other’s rhythms.

Thank you for the compliment. I can just picture explaining to my husband that his nightly riots should ease up in a year or two.
I’ll keep working on it. Hopefully, Desmond and I can come up with a compromise where he gets his pellets and my husband and I get to sleep through the night.
The house rabbit society educator and the sweet binks rabbit rescue educator told me 1 tbs a day down to 1/2 tablespoon is the new thing. They both have rabbits that are 9 years old and that’s what my vet said as well to do for Franz as they don’t really need pellets. I was originally measuring about 1/4 cup a day as the usual instructions for his body weight but then all these experts said that was way too much. Now he’s eating his hay all day as well! Before I think he was full off pellets.
Just wanted to say sometimes I give them extra at night too so they won’t wake me up in a tantrum. There is nothing worse than the bunny 500 laps all over your head at 5am. I’ve had Indy and Bee free range in my room for a year now…I don’t think the ruckus ever stops lol! I just try adding new toys in too every once and awhile, a new chew basket here, or adding more shredded paper into the dig box…just something to entertain at night.
cactuspancake- Thanks for the info. I plan to wean him down to probably 1tbs in the am and another tbs at night. That’s what my adult buns get. They seem pretty satisfied with this amount. No pellet tantrums.
And this amount was approved by their bunny vet. I just don’t know how I’m going to get Desmond down to that amount when the time comes because he lives in my bedroom and he is NOT shy about letting me know that he wants more pellets NOW, even at 2am. ![]()
Lintini- My husband gets up at 4am to go to work and as soon as leaves the room I hear the zoom of bunny 500’s up and down his side of the bed.
Then he snuggles in for pets. At least I know I’m the only one dealing with the nighttime ruckus. I think the worst part is the sound of the crate bars being slammed. Maybe I should just get rid of the crate and give him a cardboard box.
He never sleeps in it anyway. He prefers the top of my bureau where he can look down on his “kingdom.” ![]()
Could he be relocated somewhere else at night? For me personally, my buns make way too much noise at night, and I am one cranky lady without my sleep (even with plenty of sleep, I can be ornery… lol!) I would not want to share a room with them.

That’s exactly what I’m afraid my husband will insist.
I don’t want him to go. I love having him in the bedroom at night. We’ve had him since November and no problems until this week when he started running out of pellets. He makes noise with his running around, pellet munching and water slurping, but that doesn’t bother us. But when the pellets run out he deliberately wakes me up with as much racket as he can make. For now, I just make sure he has enough to last through the night but soon I’ll have to start cutting back. I’m worried there will be some noisy protests.
What if he ONLY got pellets (his entire ration) before bedtime? And had to settle for hay/veggies thru out the day. At least if he threw the temper tantrum during the day, you wouldn’t be sleeping.
I use a fit kitty treat ball for all of Franz’s pellet meals! He’s so entertained by that ball, he rolls it when it’s empty hoping that pellets will come out of the ball!
I’m thinking that he is training you to give him what he wants if he makes a ruckus. If you can just get through a week or so of ignoring him, or refilling the hay bin (take it or leave it you’re telling him) then maybe he will stop. It’s the fact that it’s WORKING to get you up and feeding him his favorite that will reinforce that behavior. In fact, you’re sort of rewarding him for it, since he has a food treat for a wake up call. I would try to ignore him totally, until it’s the time you want to get up, and then make that a set time for him to learn to expect his pellets, it might stick.

You are probably right. I’ll try to go a week without getting up to give him pellets. I can deal with the noise and my husband is a pretty heavy sleeper. Hopefully, Desmond will stop or my husband won’t wake up. Too many wake ups in the middle of the night and my husband will start talking eviction from the bedroom. ![]()

That might work. But he’s probably going to eat most of them at night and the rest in the morning then be without pellets all day. Is that bad for his health to eat so many in a short period of time considering how small he is?
