Wow, where is the time going? December already?!
So, does anybody have any plans this Holiday season?![]()
No plans here. I’m such a home body. Though my in laws are talking about driving up here for christmas. Which is weird they’d want to drive. I mean, it’s a three day drive lol why not just fly?
Well I’m terrified of flying so I’d personally drive too.
My Grandparents are probably going to come visit on Christmas Eve like they usually do.
Other than that, nothing really else planned. ![]()
No plans, really. I don’t think my family is doing anything. My husband’s family will be doing their “normal stuff”. They live pretty close, so it isn’t like it’s a big deal. LOL Christmas isn’t much fun anymore. My husband and I really can’t afford to buy much for gifts.
Mimsy – Your hummingbird pictures is super cute, btw (from Nov Chat).
His parents travel by plane all the time. They get the flights free because of travelers points or something. It paid for our flight to cancun this last winter. Maybe they’re just wanting a scenic ride. Lol! But man, I hated that drive from texas tk delaware!
So sophie is back home from her spay. The last 3 buns I’ve had done before her had way way different care. They changed a lot and I’m quite pleased. They didn’t use to provide pain medicine. But they provided 3 days of medicine for sophie. They also require I call them if she isn’t eating by tomorrow morning so they can leave an opening for the 24 hour mark of no food if they’d need to see her.
Quick healing {{{Vibes}}} for Sophie! ![]()
Mimsy, I too love your humming-bird pic. What a darling! I don’t know what I thought hummingbirds did in the winter. I guess I thought they only lived in tropical places where there isn’t winter. What do you feed them?
NBO, swift recovery vibes for ((((((Sophie)))))). I’m so glad you got a pain-killer this time. They should get a pain-killer after a spay. I know I’ve read a paper to that effect but I can’t find it now. It’s very important for the prevention of post-surgical stasis, that’s all I find right now. I don’t know why it used to be assumed that rabbits don’t need pain meds after a huge operation like a spay.
I don’t have a lot of plans for Christmas. We’re not a big family. People tend to get severely stressed by Christmas, but we don’t have any small children in our family anymore and that makes it less stressful. I’ve always loved Christmas though. The lights and decorations and the fact that the darkness is on its way out after the 22th (The winter solstice. Spring on its way. Sort of!). The darkness does have a certain charm, but it really should be combined with snow. It very rarely is here.
I like to dabble sometimes with gardening so I’ve always tried planting stuff that encourages hummingbirds, but until this year I’ve only ever seen them during the summer. They usually fly south in the winter.
They eat small insects and tons of nectar. So it’s best to mix sugar and water for their feeders. You can buy it, but it’s just sugar water with chemicals and dyes, so cheaper and safer to just make it yourself.
They think they have been staying instead of going south due to folks feeding them. So I gotta figure out a way to keep their food from freezing. They need to eat a lot!!!! And there is definately no flowers to get any nectar from this time of year. She’s been going back to the feeder about every 5 minutes or so all the way till it started getting dark.
Willow goes to the vets today for a well exam. She all of a sudden hates cilantro. No idea why. she likes her greens, but not that one.
Arh haaaaaaaarr (in a pirate kinda way) –
So Sophie is a girl !!! Yay !!!!!! bam can be even happier !!!!
Cleo went to the vets yesterday since going on a bland diet for a week didn’t work. She’s now on meds every 12 hours. Uhg. Do you know how hard it is to medicate an angry cat?!
![]()
I hate medicating animals that don’t want any part of it. Dogs seem easiest, as long as you can put it in something. They don’t seem to chew…just swallow it yum.
Moxie, cats must be like the worst animals to force-feed? Do you do like a cat-burrito or what?
Mimsy, that must be a problem, preventing the hummingbird sugar-.water from freezing. I hope Willow’s exam went well. My buns sometimes go off a favorite veg just like that, but after a few weeks they’ll eat it again. Like parsley and apple-leaves f ex. It’s like they get bored.
My dad used to cut his cat tablets into 4 (very minutely with a razor blade !!!!) and then wrap them in a tiny bit of chewie stick (like playdo) so she couldn’t feel the lump….
You have to be carfeul not to handle the tablet and then handle the ‘bundle’ afterwards without washing hands or the cat can smell it from a mile off….
Or just make sure cat is very hungry before giving it so she gulps it down without too much thought….
HAH !! Easier said than done I know !! lol
They do make ” pill ” pockets for cats ? My cats thyroid medication is chicken flavored so he doesn’t mind the squirt.
The bunnies are off their metacam as of last night ( 5 days ), but I put it in a piece of banana which they easily scarfed down.
She has to wear the cone of shame. Out of all the rabbits ive had done Sophie is the first one I’ve had to resort to this lol She is so rambunctious too and won’t just chill out. She is ready to get out and run! She’s eating normally and pooping and all that jazz… but will not leave those stitches alone and caused mild bleeding. She’s rocking the cone though
Willows appointment went well. We’ve used the same vet for other pets, but was really happy that he’s really knowledgeable about bunnies. He’s a hippie sort so we got like a 15 minute lecture over the importance of weeds and which ones we should be looking for in the yard for her. lol Love the vet.
Willow being nervous, couldn’t get close enough to me and my daughter who were sitting on the floor with her, she kept climbing up to our shoulders and smashing her face against ours. So he reminded us of how fragile their backs our and to watch out for her since she is a climber.
Also warned us about Myxomatosis since we don’t vaccine against it here in the states. He says he’s seen it here, so be careful if you ever go outside with her since it’s spread by mosquito. That scares me.
Went over her diet and care and he gave us the ok about that. Says her teeth look good, weight looks perfect. Says he hates doing nails too…says to make his staff do it. haha
Did make fun of her fur and said she looks like she’s molting…she’s not she’s just a lionhead, which he thinks are funny. All the staff loved her and were surprised she was so good for them. They said most just freeze up terrified or try and hide.
Said spaying around February would be good.
Hummingbirds are interesting little things. They will go into a torpid state at night to conserve energy. Their metabolisms are high so they have to do that so they don’t starve overnight. Not sure how that works in the winter though. I’ve never seen a hummingbird in winter. They always left and headed south after Sept/Oct.
Aww, poor Sophie! She doesn’t look to happy there.
I’m trying to think if we ever gave my bridge kitty pills for anything. I don’t think so. I did make the mistake of showing my husband how to get a cat to open its mouth though. =\

![]()
Yes, yes I do. I had to medicate my grandmother’s cat for over a MONTH. lol
Did they give you liquid or pills? If it’s liquid, a “bunny burrito” works to keep those claws out of your skin and then you just push the syringe (with fingers out of the way so they don’t bite!) into the side of their mouth. If it’s pills, well… I generally get bitten, but can avoid scratches with the burrito and push the pill into the back of their throat and then hold the mouth shut and rub the throat til they swallow.
Her cat would hold the pill in his mouth for a few minutes and try to push it out with his tongue, after biting me for putting it in his mouth to begin with. The liquid he didn’t like, but was easy to get into him. Powders… ha, he doesn’t like canned food to begin with, good luck getting him to eat anything with medicine on / in it. Treats? Nope. Got him his medicine in chicken flavored cat treats and he turned his nose up at them. I got pretty good at getting him to take it, but man cats like to make you pay for it. Dogs are so much easier, put it in a piece of food and they swallow it.
BunLuv, I hope they’re still doing fine without their pain med. Maybe they can be coerced to eat banana even if it doesn’t have any pain-med in it? (Joking!!!)
NBO, she does look a bit p-d off in that pic. Has she been prescribed a high enough dose of the Metacam? Pulling at stiches can be a sign of pain. Rabbits metabolize meloxicam a bit faster than f ex dogs. Medirabbit says 0.1 – 0.2 mg/kg up to 1.5 mg/kg if needed per 24 hs. But she does look feisty and all. An angry bunny is not a lethargic bunny, so to speak. The look on her face reminds me of LPT’s Olivia =)
Mimsy, that’s awful about the myxo. If it’s spreading in North America I hope you’ll get access to the vaccine.
I hope the hummingbird makes it.
They seem okay without it ![]()
@lbj10 I had found only found out about their sleep while researching why this little one was here. Says they do fine in the cold, it’s usually the lack of food that sends them south, but with many people feeding them they are staying. the cold, I only know doesn’t effect Anna’s hummingbird, not sure how the others do with it.
@bam The hummingbird is still here and I found another couple is feeding her one street up.
It seems very silly that we don’t have the vaccine.
She’s certainly getting enough pain medicine because she’s being a pain in the rear! I’m wondering if that’s why she’s being extra feisty because she feels extra good compared to my other 3 I’ve had done who didnt get pain meds. They actually, idk… rested! She came out ready to exercise. Eating, pooping and everything almost immediately lol
We don’t need the vaccine yet because it’s still very, very uncommon here in the states. I think it’s only been noted on the west coast and in super tiny numbers. Like less than 10 over the years. It’s not common enough to put out a vaccine yet.
I am in Oregon. He says he’s seen a couple cases in recent years. He said it was extremely sad and it would be best to just not take her outside during certain times of day during the the time of year where there are a lot of mosquito’s. He says that they have been closing rabbit shows at the county fairs in our area due to it.
Glad to hear your bunny is feeling so well, even if she is being a little spaz when she is supposed to be resting.
NBO, it’s really great to hear that she’s such a little vigorous pain in the rear =)
Mimsy, rabbits with myxo tend to be seen by people, because they get blind (their eyes get swollen shut) so they don’t hide like buns normally do. Your cotton-tail rabbits are much less sensitive to the virus though so hopefully you won’t get any real epidemics.
Cleo’s meds are liquid, so we do the cat-burrito thing.
It’s hard because she’ll lock her jaw, and struggle a lot. Even though she’s not the friendliest cat, nobody has been seriously scratched or bit.
And I agree, dogs are SO much easier! ![]()
Oh, good, liquids are so much easier
no losing a finger every dose! haha The cat here tried to lock his jaw as well, but there is a spot on the side of their mouth kinda like rabbits where you can get a little “in” with a small syringe. They are annoying to medicate.
Mimsy, you’re right, all birds who migrate do so because of food. If robins find somewhere with a constant food supply, they will stick around in the winter too. I find hummingbirds interesting though because they lower their body temperature at night to conserve energy. I guess I never thought of what happens if it’s really cold out when they do that. There are other birds who do it, so I suppose the temperature outside doesn’t necessarily matter. As long as they can still maintain the bare minimum temperature to keep from freezing, I suppose.
It’s interesting how anna’s deal with the extreme cold. As you said hummingbirds go into a torpid state when the sleep. Anna’s will do even shorter ones, all during the day when it gets really cold to conserve energy between feedings.
There was actually warnings to not touch them if it looks like it’s frozen to the feeder…they are just in a torpid state they will come out on their own. So strange, if I hadn’t read that I would probably assume it died from cold if I found it like that.
I notice she stays in a tree really close to the feeder and goes from tree to feeder and small rounds in my yard, always has feeder in line of sight. any time I pull into the drive way she flys in front of the car, like she’s making sure it’s me and not some intruder trying to get her food.
Bam, I researched a little on myxo and apparently where I am linn/benton county it has reached epidemic numbers during some years. They have banned the 4h rabbit shows at the fairs several times due to outbreaks here. The issue seems to the brush rabbit, who is a big carrier of the disease. They have breed with the cottontails, and they look now similar and have the white tails, but are very small in comparison. In years that the brush rabbit numbers go high so does myxo. it seems most cases of it has been with outdoor rabbits, obviously. I think taking precautions and just not taking her out during bad times during the summer especially at dusk/dawn all should be fine. It does seem silly not to be able to vaccinate though.
Haven’t posted on the chat in so long….I doubt you guys remember me
Lol
NBO-Sophie is so cute. She doesn’t like cone of shame.
((((vibes))))
I’m glad all of your buns (and cats!) are doing well after their vet visits! My holiday plans are semi-bland. I get to go home for the first time in almost four months, this is the longest I’ve ever been away so I am extremely happy. I can’t wait to eat Christmas dinner, see my old friends, and go skiing. What may be the highlight will be the family trip up to Mt. Hood, where we will stay over new years!
I’m also going to be designing and constructing a new cage Ru. I want to make two cages, a larger, one level cage for when he is back at home and a vertical cage for my dorm room. Hopefully he will like them both!
~Liv
Mimsy, I didn’t know about the bush rabbits, thank you for the info! It does seem really silly that you can’t get the vaccine, but I’m guessing it must get FDA approved etc, and that that’s so expensive the company making it don’t see the possibility of a reasonable profit. If the problem grows, the will be an increased demand though. I hope it’s not like in Australia where the myxo vaccine is forbidden because they want to keep the rabbit population down.
Hummingbirds seem really interesting. Robins (not the same type robins you have but still very pretty and lovely little red-chested birds) tend to stay here during the winter too nowadays. I don’t know about the climate-changes, but it certainly is warm this winter, so most birds have no difficulty finding food. This morning it was 9,4 C (49 F) before dawn. I still have my geraniums on the balcony, they are in bloom. Which is a bit weird for December in Sweden, you might say.
Bam, I had to go look up your robins. They are such round little cuties, they look like a xmas ornament.
Im thinking of getting one of those giant floor lint rollers. The hay is a vaccuum killer.
Oh yes Bam, I remember us talking about it before. You have robins there, but they are from a completely different family of birds.
I never know what I want/to ask for for Christmas, I always draw a blank! One of the things I have asked for though is a coffee mug with pics on it (you know the ones you can get at rite aid or walmart?). ![]()
Same here. This year I’m not getting anything because I don’t rrally want anything lol if I have to think hard and long for something I want then I guess I don’t want it bad enough. My husband doesn’t really want anything either. Probably because when we want something throughout the year we just get it lol! We don’t want a lot of things. We do like to take mini vacations and travel though haha
Tried taking Sophie’s cone off and she still just will not leave that incision alone. So she gets to wear the cone for another day or two. Now I know where the vet was coming from about giving medicine to rabbits after surgery. My other 3 were not this annoying with recovery. They actually rested. Sophie has been over doing it from the get go and I feel it’s because she doesn’t rrally feel the extent of her surgery and she’s just… recovery has never been this problematic for me. I feel it’s going to take forever to get fully healed the way she’s been!
My vet will only use internal dissolving stitches for rabbits, because he’s had too many chew on the other types of stitches. Rabbits and stitches can be a pain. For keeping her calm, have you tried confining her some in like a crate so she can heal? My girl, even with pain meds, just laid around acting miserable for two days and on the third she wanted to binky. I had to kinda keep her locked up a little bit more than usual to keep her from opening the incision.
Sticker bunny she is in a dog crate. And she has internal stitches with the surgical glue on the outside. She’s just been ready to go from then get go. Like, I opened the crate after getting back and she hopped right out and tried getting out of her cage to explore lol! I feel so bad for her with this cone on. She’s 4 days post op tomorrow and she still has this cone! Her incision doesn’t look good enough for me to feel comfortable allowing her to groom it as much as she was when I took it off. I wonder when the skin is healed enough for it to withstand the licking? Im sure it’s just itching because it’s healing
@Bam.
I fell in love with Sweden in the late eighties when i went spent time in Vasteras. I thought (as a young ignoramous would) Sweden was covered in snow 12 months of the year, but at our scout jamboree we had a heat wave !!!! LOL
Last night I went to an all night art show and for the first time ever came home with a painting !
A reproduction of an old vietnamese lady, close up of face, smiling. Her eyes just light up and she makes you want to smile when you look at her!
Isn’t it funny how art (and music) touches people in different ways…. the 5 friends that I was with last night thought nothing speical of her.
My wallet was lighter but I had a smile on, my face. :o)
The painting sounds lovely Vienna. ![]()
Newbunny, I wonder if you could get a little shirt for her to wear for now. Might be more comfy than a cone and keep her off the stiches?
Mimsy she would destroy that shirt. I don’t see cotton standing between her and those stitches. So day 4 I decided to take the cone off. Just checked and she has bleeding so cone is back on. It sucks because she’s SO messy with the cone on. Just a disaster. She digs, misses the litterbox and pee gets everywhere. Then she steps in her pee… point taken vets, no more pain management for future spays or neuter lol I totally get what they were saying now haha
I am hoping it will snow soon. So it will look and feel more like Christmas.
It won’t snow here this Christmas they say. I know it’s a great cost for the taxpayers and all, but snow does make the world very pretty.
Well !!! As I was saying – if it doesn’t snow at Christmas in Sweden, then what hope have the rest of us in Europe got !!!! LOL
Holiday plans? Hmmmm
Hubs and I are planning a date night – watching A Clamation Christmas and sharing a shrimp ring lol. Also. We’re doing gingerbread houses sometime.
On Christmas eve, we always go to a candlelight service at church, then come home and pig out and open gifts. This year my sisters boyfriend from England will be here, so it will be them, my mom and me and hubs. Then Christmas day we go to the in-laws.
My mom isostly housebound, so the week after Christmas we are doing an open house, where people can come stop by and say hi and have some cocoa.
We “adopted” my best friends family this year. She is a single mom of 5 kids. She was just diagnosed with cancer a second time in November. So we bought them gifts and my church is taking them food.
its fun playing secret Santa!
Teehee Bam and sophie have been posted on binky bunny facebook! It’s so exciting to see them on there!
Hello again from SC!
Zoey, all FOUR bunnies, and the growing baby bump are doing well. ^_^ Just haven’t posted in a while and wanted to say hi to my BB family!
Hi CT!
Hi CT! Glad to see you!
^_^ I’ve been horribly lazy today since I actually get an opportunity to be today… sure, there are lots of things I probably should be doing… but I’m not. I had one pair of bunnies running amok this morning, now I have the other pair running amok!
Vinny and Velvet are constantly up and down the stairs and into everything when they get a chance. Between the 4 of them I get my exercise going up and down the stairs to see what they’re up to!
Ugh So Willow keeps jumping onto the desks. I pulled all the chairs away, but then I caught her the act. She just jumps up. From there she jumps to the top of her pen, which the top has sheet binder clipped to..then she binkys like crazy like it’s a personal trampoline.
She’s gonna have to get locked up till I can run out and grab more split loom, for stuff on the desk.
Why is she so naughty?
They sound like lovely buns! How lucky they are that they get to be your forever-buns. Good to hear that Tilly and Duncan and Zooey are fine. I have to say I miss them a bit ![]()
She’s having soooo much fun ! She doesn’t know its being ‘naughty’ – boing boing binky binky weeeeeeeeee !!!!
A rebelling teenager !! LOL
So you say, the bunny stew is not the answer?
LOL I actually love the spunk she has. Just a fearless little furry monster.
No bunny stew is not the answer, but she sounds as if she should go to military camp to control her energy !!
Just in case though….. make sure all pots and pans are tidied away in cupboards with shut doors !!
She’s probably soooo light she can spring anywhere !!
And I think your photo of her is probably one of THE cutest on here…. no disrespect to the other gorgeous bunnies on here of course
)
She looks like one of the pompom balls you can makes from wool, wrapping silver grey wool around and through 2 doughnut shaped pieces of carboard together and then cutting through the edges…….(or am I the only one who did that when I was but a young chickadee??!) :o))
Arrrrr… I lost my post! Oh well.
Bam – we agreed from the day we caught them that they couldn’t stay and we couldn’t take in more bunnies right now, but after more than 3 months of vet care, getting to know them and trying to find homes for them they kind of grew on us. We can’t bear the idea of them being a Christmas gift, and we know we can’t part with them to a shelter or questionable home, so we’ve decided that they’re staying for good.
The real fun is going to be trying to bond the two pairs into a quartet!
Vienna – I’ve not done that before, but it sounds like a cute little craft idea! I’ll have to give it a try!
Vienna, I did those pompoms. You tie a piece of yarn between the donuts as soon as you’ve cut through the edges. Then remove donuts and you have a Willow look-alike
Mimsy, I too would suspect Willow is just being happy happy happy. Extra work for you, but a young bunny’s gotta do what a young bunny gotta do, i.e. have FUN!
LOL – glad to have been of inspiration CT !!
Don’t forget two identical bits of cardboard back to back, you need thi for the end tie-off !
Once you’ve gone round and through and round and through so many times that the hole in the doughnut is as filled in as it can be, you cut the wool along the outside edges of the cardboard (slip the scissors between the cardboard) and then (if i remember rightly) you slip a piece of wool in between the 2 cardboards, wrap it around the other side, tie it off – hard – and then cut away the cardboard.
If your wool is compact enough and your middle-tie is tight enough you should have a little pompom ball!
If it is not, then you’ll have hundreds of identical pieces of woollen strands at your feet !!! LOL
I remember making those like back in grade school. So strange it was sooo long ago and hadn’t even thought about it till just now.
Question about fish!
Okay, so I know this is kinda a controversial topic, but I’d like to know peoples opinion on what would be a proper sized fish tank for 1 fish? I know it all depends on the size of fish and bigger is better. (Like a goldfish that can be 14” long would need a bigger tank than, say a couple tetra) I’m leaning towards a beta fish because they stay relatively small and are pretty and have personality.
We had one when I was little (8 or so maybe?) and it went missing after the first day. We had it in a giant tank with several other fish, we went out to eat and when we came back he was gone. We think maybe he jumped out and got eaten by Sky (rip)? ANYWAY, what would be an okay size? Tanks are really $$$ here, a 20 gallon is nearly $200, without all the other needs like a filter, ect.
Would a 10 gallon be okay for a beta? I also read online that female betas can be kept in groups of three (or more, but preferably an odd number I guess). If that’s the case I might want to get three. So how much bigger than a 10 gallon would I need? (Also if it didn’t work out my siblings have fish tanks where I could house the other betas if they didn’t get along). Or would a 10 gallon still be okay? We haven’t had any real set ups in a LONG time. My sister has a “Shiner” bait fish that was rescued who’s been living in a 10 gallon tank for around 4-5 years though.
But if anybody has any fish or betta experience, please let me know.
I’m in no rush. I just really love looking at fish and I want to make sure any fish I bring into my home will be well and properly taken care of.
ALSO, online you’ll see people saying they live different ages. If betas apparently only live 2 years, and they are usually already a year old when you buy them, that means they’ll die pretty soon after you get them. Does anybody know about this?
Okay, I apologize for how long this post is and how I seem to just ramble on sometimes!![]()
There’s some magic fish ratio, like 5 gallons per inch of fish or something like that. Or maybe one gallon per inch of fish. It’s been awhile since we had fish lol. We had a 55 gallon tank and had approximately 15ish fish. All were smaller in size, maybe 2 inches max. And it is true about fish doing better in odd numbers. I think tetras and barbs are that way also.
So, there’s a bunch of non-conclusive info for ya, Moxie lol
You might try contacting local fish rescue. I see a ton of fish clubs/rescues and small fish only stores. I’m in a small town and have all that here, so I imagine most places probably have a decent fish community. I think your more dirty fish need a larger environment-such as goldfish, Oscars ect. Whereas others can have a smaller space. Also the larger the space the less often you have to clean it, or you can do more partial cleanings. So if you go as large as possible you will have to put a lot less work into it. Also I’ve always heard, a hungry fish is a healthy fish. That doesn’t mean starve it of course. but it does mean that there is never any waste in their tank and the fish are always willing to eat. The more often you feed the better for most species. (like a tiny bit several times a day, over one big feeding a day) Not everyone can do that though. It’s been at least a decade since I had fish, but I’m going to assume that this is all still holds true.
The parrot board I belong to just had a member go to an awful breeders home. When the owner left the room he took several pictures of the place. it was pretty horrific and I won’t go into details. He turned them into authorities and they came and t ook all the animals. It turns out it was 50 parrots, 50 g pigs and 100 rabbits in the home. I’m keeping an eye on the thread to see if t he animals will be rehomed. Right now, I’m guessing it’s still under investigation. If so is it ok to post here about the bunnies?
We had a beta years back… a friend of mine suggested I get one since I was a bit depressed at school and I had always had a pet… We bought the tiniest spunkiest male and a 5 gallon tank. He lived in that for about 9 months, and when I went home from college he upgraded to a 20 gallon tank (filtered) that used to house goldfish (cleaned well)… He had little fake plants, a bridge, and a castle… we got him some balloon belly mollies (2) and a pair of moon snails (a blue and a yellow)… He got along well with all of them and they seemed happy, but the blue snail didn’t last more than a day or two.. I suspect it was probably in poor health when we got him… The mollies and Bagels (the beta) lived happily together for several years… We had Bagels in that tank for about 4 years, along with his yellow snail (CreamCheese)… the mollies lived about 3 years with us and I’m honestly not sure if we did something wrong with them or if they have short life spans. Bagels was a happy beta though (or at least I like to think); he would rest in his plants and the castle tower, and he would swim to the top of the tank to have his top-fin stroked at the water surface and nibble on your finger and blow bubbles.
So that’s my fish experience. ^_^ Unless you count my mother-in-laws goldfish… I have no clue how old they are, but I know they were not new when I started dating my (now) husband a good 11 years ago… They’re about a foot long each (koi type) and missing some scales… I think one is also part blind, but they’re still going and spunky!
Mimsy, if the rabbits are being rehomed via a rescue or a shelter, it’s ok to post here about them. Poor animals.
Thanks for the “fishy” advice everyone. ^.^
Cottontail– How cool, her fish must be old. Gold fish can live up to 30 years old, so she might still have them for quite a while yet! ![]()
I hope the poor animals get a chance to be rehomed… I’ve seen many times where local government and animal control go in and put many animals to sleep that could have benefitted from some minor medical care and some basic care… *sending them good vibes*
My stomach is not happy this morning… I’m not sure if it’s the Chinese we had last night or if the baby just shifted during the night. Either way, nausea was back this morning and my stomach has been grumbling something fierce. It’s been 2 hours already and I hope it passes soon… I have bunnies to let run and a crib to start assembling!
Tilly and Duncan are in good spirits though! They’ve been zooming around most of the morning, up and down the stairs and around their room. Tilly is currently exploring under the TV and Duncan is playing lord of the litterbox… I suspect another round of charge and chase soon…
I forgot, when are you due again? =] And early congrats on the 1000 post!
Okay so I have a dress rehearsal for a play I’m in, tonight. It’s being held 3 days in a row. I’m an angel with 2 lines and then I’m in the choir for almost all the songs. I’m not the best singer (and I have stage fright) but this has been a lot of fun. BUT, I can’t wait until it will be over.
4000 posts, man I can’t imagine I’ve posted THAT much!
![]()
We’re do in mid-April. ^_^ But we want to get the crib set up and start setting up the nursery before then… partially so it’s not all done at the last minute when I’m too big to help, and partially so that Tilly and Duncan get the idea that the room is no longer solely theirs.
I didn’t even realize I was at 1000 posts!
Good eye, Moxie! And congrats on hitting 4K! I’ve got a lot of catching up to do!
At post number one we had little Pete and Zoey… Now we also have Tilly, Duncan, Vinny and Velvet! (Pete will always be with us!)
As far as the stage-fright goes, I had it bad until joining speech and debate in high school… I think probably the best piece of advice I got on performing (other than to project) was “If you don’t feel like you’re making a fool of yourself, then you’re not trying hard enough!” I’m sure that you’ll be great!
Fun, My dad’s is the 27th of April. =]
Mimsy, just to add about the re-homing rabbits: BB told us that they can’t be found homes or fundraising done directly here on binkybunny, but a rescue or shelter can try to rehome them in our rescue section. (No fundraising, though.) So If they are controlled by a rescue, or several, you can post there to send people to the rescue’s link to get to the website for finding homes.
Having been siezed by the authorities would probably mean that the city or county where they are located will use their own Animal Control officer, or team, to handle all the animals. In that case, I would start by going to the .gov website for that town and find the link to their Animal Control division. They will probably be the first to post the availability of these animals, or will announce what shelters are helping handle them. You can also write to them and ask where they are being sent.
Thank you for the clarification. I’m assuming we won’t know anything for at least a few days. I imagine the people involved have to be first found guilty of neglect and then the animals will be sent to shelters or the humane society. When/if I see them released for adoption I’ll add the rescue to the correct forum. it should be a when though, from the pictures I saw I can’t imagine the authorities allowing the owners to get those animals back.
CT!!! Hey, guess what! I was at H&M earlier today. I happened to glance at the baby clothes and they had bunny-themed stuff. So cute! I thought of you when I saw it. ![]()
Yep bunnies are all over the place in France too !
Kitchen aprons, baby stuff, cushions !.. it’s the fashion!
But no-one knows anyone else in France who has a house bunny like me – a REAL one !! LOL
I’ve started bonding Bam and Sophie. It’s pretty boring stuff…
LBJ – I’m always looking for cute bunny stuffs ^_^ I’m going to have to get a picture of the little outfit that we got in the mail from Mr Binks and his momma.
It”s adorable.
NBO- Boring stuff can be a good thing. It means you’re not breaking up fights! I never thought I would spend so much time in my bathroom without either being sick or asleep in the tub! lol
The play I was in went great tonight.
Looking forward to tomorrow and the next day’s play. It’s the same play, but we were doing it several days so a lot of people would have a chance to see it. =)
CT – I thought the stuff was cute. Neutral colors and bunnies. Oh, and squirrels too. They had squirrel stuff.
Moxie – That’s great! So glad you’re having a good time. I was in a play in middle school and we did a couple of performances at the school’s auditorium. And then we performed at a local coffee house. We had to change in the empty building next door with the boys and girls sort of in there together.
So during a conversation on FB in trying to help someone identify the breed of their bunnies I put up a picture of Duncan to show how similar they looked. Someone more familiar with bunnies in the area spoke up and IDed Duncan as a Tennessee redback. I had never heard of the breed so I looked it up and he’s a perfect fit. The poor babies are bred for meat-farming and training hunting dogs; thus the cottontail-like coloring, high energy, and medium size… He’s spot on for normal size/weight (when not intentionally overfed), and markings and high energy levels are spot-on. I knew he escaped life as a meat-bun considering his condition when found and the fact that there are ‘farmers’ in the area…. I’m glad that we have our little Dunny-bunny and he can live out his life as a spoiled house-bunny.
In unrelated news, we went out to the gun range today and had some light target-practice and social time. It was really nice. ^_^ I did have some difficulty due to the change in my glasses rx since the last time I shot… I was used to being able to sight with both eyes and be pretty accurate… but I’ve got one far-sighted eye and one near-sighted so now it’s a matter of figuring out which eye I can line the sight up with properly. It was still fun, even if the hubby did better than me this time.
How interesting CT, I’ve never heard about the breed either. I looked them up out of curiosity and the first like 3 links that popped up were breeders in SC. Don’t you live in SC?
Okay, so I’m getting ready for the play and I’m a little more at peace with it since it went okay yesterday (Plus my family won’t be there so I won’t feel their eyes piercing into my soul LOL! It’s not that I don’t enjoy them going, but it can be more awkward doing stuff in-front of family, because you want to do extra good) Wish me luck! (BTW I’ll probably have no voice by Monday, too much singing, lol!
Okay so they play went good.
Of course there’s always a person or two who didn’t think the play was THAT good, or that people sounded “fake”. But I mean it’s a play, with people who’ve never professionally acted before. What do they expect? =/
Anyway, Tell me if this sounds like somebody is interested in you:
So I was singing in the play (nearly all the songs, and I had an acting part) and this guy I know (but we don’t really talk) had a friend along with him and was watching the play. Everytime I was up I could feel (and see) them staring at me. After the play the guy I know, (who I didn’t even know knew my name!) started calling out to me after saying something to his friend. He asked me how old I was. I answered and he smiled, gave me a thumbs up and said “Gotcha”. Being the shy person I am I was *kinda* freaked out. LOL
Zero (our dog) just came up and belched in my face. Gross! >.<
Moxie- Yeah, we’re in SC; and one of the breeders/farmers is in the area where Duncan was picked up by animal control. I knew that they had meat bunnies there, but I didn’t know until looking it up that they’re Tennessee redbacks.
As for the guy, it sounds like either he or his buddy like you, but I really couldn’t tell you. I was awful at figuring out who liked me in highschool, and I wasn’t much better after.
I’m glad that you’re enjoying your show though. ![]()
We’lve been out all day today so the bunnies didn’t get any bonding time… We have the munchkins running at the moment, and they’ll be out until we head to bed, but I’m sure Dunny and Tilly will be upset at us for not letting them run tonight. Tomorrow they’ll all be upset with most of their out time being bonding-time.
Hmm, it’s hard to say Moxie. Boys are confusing creatures, especially when it comes to expressing how they feel. Sometimes they do or say things that girls take the wrong way. That being said, he was watching you in the play and he did call out to you. Maybe his friend thought you were cute and was too embarrassed to talk to you.
It’s pouring rain here. Thunder, lightening, and lot’s of rain. o_O My husband is currently trying to figure out how to catch the water from a leak that sprung.
I can’t figure Bam and Sophie out lol Sophie stomps and honks a lot and runs off anytime Bam approaches. I don’t blame her. He humps and when he doesn’t hump he does a weird, aggressive groom that can’t be pleasant. Yet at the same time she flops and sleeps. But as soon as Bam approaches she jumps up, honks and stomps and goes to flops elsewhere. I’m confused and Bam is confused… Sophie is confusing lol she looks comfortable around him to flop next to him like that but then if he touches her she decides she doesn’t like him.
Well I was so bored with today’s bonding so I just left Bam and Sophie to exercise in the living room together. I opened both of their cages too. Sophie took it upon herself to move in with Bam. She has yet to go to her own cage. She’s currently flopped inside while Bam is snoozing in his condo. I think she’s just playing hard to get! Bam can sneak in a groom when she’s sleeping but she wakes and quickly hops away stomping her feet and honking in disapproval. I feel it will be love given time lol but right now they only just like each other haha
Well at least Bam and Sophie aren’t fighting. ![]()
LBJ— Maybe. I know they are a few years older than me so I think that’s why they wanted to know my age.
Prepping for Christmas with the boyfriend and the bunnies. No family members, just us thankfully.
Am keeping a Facebook page for the bunnies, to store all the pictures I am now taking with my new Christmas gift i got early. A camera. =)
https://www.facebook.com/ChomtheKing/
Yes sorry Moxie, sounds like he gave thumbs up as a sort of confirmation that you were younger…and that he’d leave it… but in a few years, age won”t matter….but of course that’s no consolation to you now….
Bam and Sophie moved in together today. They aren’t very closely or tightly bonded. They’re more like roommates lol! Sophie will flop and sleep and Bam will be sleeping. If Bam tries to groom her she will yell at him for touching her lol they lay next to each other now but there’s no true interaction between the two lol as I was typing this Bam went over there and humped her head! First hump of the day. She just got up, stomped at him and then flopped back down and went back to sleep… *sigh* given time I’m sure they’ll go from roommates to lovers… maybe? Lol!
Moxie – Well, if they are only a couple years older it probably isn’t a big deal. I guess it depends on the situation and how old everyone actually is. I’m sure you’re right though. That’s probably why they asked.
NBO – There hasn’t been any fighting though. Take that as a positive sign. Sometimes bunnies aren’t head-over-heels in love with each other, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be bonded.
Wow, it rained SO much. Over 3 inches in all, over the weekend. Is this the new normal for December? LOL I mean, when I was a kid, that would have been snow…..
Moxie, beware of older boys. You’ll make all your BB “parents” worry. Aren’t you already bethroted to a BBers son btw? (I’m only JOKING, of course!)
Boys are difficult, I seem to recall.
It’s raining here too. But that’s normal here, always has been. If we get winter, we tend to get it in Jan-Feb. I so love winter when there’s snow and ice.
Yeah true lbj. It’s just, I got Sophie with Bam in mind. With the baby and all I feel he hasn’t been getting the attention he needs for being a single bunny. So I wanted to give him some company. And i wished they’d enjoy each others company! Lol don’t get me wrong, they still get a lot of attention from me. But I’d wished for something for their relationship to ease my guilt for poor Bam being a single bachelor these last 2 years! Lol!
Yeah, it’s just everyone makes a big deal over age gaps here for some reason. Once I liked a boy 2 years older than me and everybody I told freaked out or gave me a weird look. I mean 2 years isn’t THAT bad! At least not in my opinion.
Yes Bam, don’t tell JR’s son!
BTW, JackRabbit, MegaBunny, AndHenry, TheMidnightSapphire and a few others haven’t been on much anymore. I guess this is what it’s like when you’ve been on for a couple years, slowly seeing people drift away. =[
NBO – just be patient and see where it goes with Sophie and Bam.. they may still like each other yet; but they may need some positive reinforcement or repeated exposure.
Moxie- I know a couple of them I’ve been in contact with outside of BB, and life just gets busy… I’ve been trying my best to get on here lately, but I spend a lot of time dealing with baby stuff, bonding, family drama, and life in general… PLUS I wasn’t planning on going through over 25lbs of hay in 2 months! My bunnies are pigs! I’m looking into possibly ordering it in the 60lb boxes from SmallPetSelect…
MB is down here with me, and we’re going to have lunch tomorrow; so I’ll let her know that you’re thinking about her!
CT— Okay cool. =] And how cool is it you have a BB friend you can see in real life?
Maybe one day I’ll get to come and visit. ![]()
Moxie, yes, it’s JR’s son! I won’t tell him, of course. You should tell him yourself. (yes, still joking!)
Say hello to MB from me too, CT!
25 lbs of hay in 2 months, my goodness. That is a lot of hay!
NBO, I think it’s early days yet with Bam and Sophie.
Finally sophie was grooming Bam this morning lol about time some love was shared between the two
Uhg hay LOL. I just bought a tiny bale of hay for $5 (used to be $2). It was ALL chaff/dust. UHG. And I can’t return it since it’s opened. So now I either have to go buy another small bale for $5 and hope it’s better (I normally buy the small bales) or buy a slightly bigger one for $10 and hope it’s not a bigger waste of money.
Wow, Christmas is in 9 days, 9 hours and 37 minutes as I post this.
LOL – Christmas countdown from Moxie – and us in Europe will get there earlier !! (sticking tongue out !) lol
Ah don’t worry NBO – Bam will get be fine – and Sophie will come round and it’s still great company for him…. she could be out to kill him and you wouldn’t be able to put them in together – baby steps ….. :o))
Me and my great imagination – Bam humping head, Sophie thumping foot and flopping !!! Just imagine if they could speak ! Priceless !
Can I just say NBO that I really want to steal Bam and Sophie!?! They’re so adorable <3
I can’t believe Christmas is in 9 days O_o My family and I haven’t even started wrapping yet…we’re quickly reaching ‘crisis’ mode ![]()
I was at a charity-shop yesterday with my mother, and found the most adorable little doll’s bed. Bam has an IKEA-bed, but poor Yohio has to sleep in the hoomin-bed, so of course I bought the bed for him. I made the bed up with pieces of pink vet bed, and then I waited with my phone ready, I wanted to post a super-cute pic of him lounging on the bed here.
I’m still waiting =/ So you’ll have to make do with a pic of the empty bed.
I don’t suppose he’ll be using the ladder much
so I’ve removed it, but I thought it’d look cute in a pic.
That is insanely adorable Bam!
Bam, that’s adorable ?????
How cute!
I haven’t wrapped a thing, and frankly I’m not the best at wrapping.
Like…Do trash-bags count? LOL. I’m getting better though. ![]()
Boyfriend and I caved and wound up opening our Christmas presents early. Neither of us have any patience. But we are glad we celebrated early. His xbox 360 wound up dying, and his Christmas gift was a ps3 from me so upsides!
We took it as a sign to open them early because Chom actually used the litterbox, which he NEVER does.
Moxie, my family is German so we’re slightly nuts about Christmas (although we don’t tell kids the story of Krampus anymore ?)…we don’t put any of the gifts out until the kids are in bed Christmas Eve and my mom is METICULOUS about wrapping everything. I am NOT a great wrapper and she makes me redo it so many times I just want to scream and rip all of my hair out ??? I’ll have to post a picture of what Christmas morning looks like for us…It takes mom hours to set everything out juuuuuuust right ?
hiskatey93, I don’t have any patience either…I already weaseled out what I was getting from both of my sisters and my cousin. I love surprises, but I hate waiting for them ? And yay for Chom!!!
It just doesn’t feel like the holidays down here this year… We missed out on our Halloween spirit, Thanksgiving was nice but more of just a family dinner this year… and Christmas is fast approaching with so much going on that I still haven’t even attempted to figure out my lights or a topper for my tree.
I got a gift for my nephew (still not wrapped) but have done virtually no shopping this year. I feel a little guilty about it, but at the same time I have a doctors appointment the week of Christmas, my sister has a surgery that week, and I still have to get Zoey to the vet for her rabies shot before the end of the year because we’re renters so it has to stay up to date. I just need an infusion of holiday spirit and cheer.
ABH– Cool.
Your Christmas morning sounds very pretty, neat and tidy. Also, I don’t think I’ve ever heard the full story of Krampus, I’d have to look it up.
CT– It doesn’t feel like Christmas here either. Normally we definitely have snow at least the week of (last year we got it before Thanksgiving) Christmas, and this year we have nothing. =[
In SC a white Christmas isn’t really a thing… but there’s usually some kind of spirit to it. I just haven’t caught that yet. My family was joking about just celebrating Chinese New Year with a big Christmas tree and all kinds of lights and decorations in the yard and just let the neighbors wonder whats going on… we should be ready for Christmas by then! lol
Oh Bam that is adorable !
My son will be getting the babies an IKEA bed for Christmas.
I had a terrifying day today and feel so lucky to still have Josephine. She fell the other day from on top of the hay box, mainly because of an extra piece of cardboard that tipped when she jumped to the kitchen chair. The next day she hid in her willow tent the entire day, still eating, pooping etc. I took her to the rescues vet today. It was feared her jaw was broken but after an X Ray it is only bruised. The vet really didn’t know if he could think of how to fix it if it was broken. Apparently easier in a cat or dog, but he’d never done so on a rabbit. Since I volunteer with the rescue I received their rates at the vet, thank goodness. The box is now removed and hopefully she will cease her acrobatics !! She has metacam for a week and is currently asleep in the litterbox.
I receive an new set of fosters post spay in the morning, my other girls returned to the rescue. That was hard to see because it is not like being in a house
I do know I can not adopt anymore bunnies though so all I can do is hope they will be happy after my part in their life.
Aww, poor Krampus. He isn’t such a bad guy. Hehehe!
They are predicting a warmer than normal winter here this year. I don’t think we’ll see snow before Christmas. We has a bit of heavy wet snow mix in at the end of the 3″ rain event we just had. It was all slush though when I went to work that morning and it melted by lunch time. *shrugs* I guess I would prefer it didn’t snow a bunch. I don’t have a garage to put my car in and I hate trying to clean it off to go to work. They are terrible about plowing the streets here too.
Bunluv – I hope she is okay. Poor thing. Seems there is an epidemic of bunnies falling off of things lately.
I can’t say I’m in much of the Christmas spirit. We haven’t decorated. We can’t really since the house is in such disarray from one unfinished project after another. There are certain members who know what I’m talking about, but many are not here. =\ I have to wait until Christmas Eve to finish up my shopping since I won’t have any more money until then (my next pay check). There were so many big bills due right before Christmas, it has been very stressful. *sigh*
BunLuv, I can imagine it was tough to see the girls go, but you kept them safe during the time when they were at their most vulnerable, and now they can be safely adopted out. I think it’s great.
I’m so glad Josephine was only bruised! So scary =( We’ve had at least 4 new posts about bunnies falling off of things just recently, it’s really weird =/ Are they drinking Christmas eggnog on the sly?
I have decorated the apt. But we’re not having much of a Christmas this year since the only child in the family, my niece, is going away to Gran Canaria over the holidays with her dad (my brother). Children are rather a must for successful celebration of Christmas.
Our Zoey-cat is not feeling 100% and we realized that she’s due for her rabies-shot as well. She can’t get the shot if she’s sick, but we made an appointment with a vet (new one for her) and she’ll be going in this afternoon for a physical and to get checked out. Her nose-bridge is wet, like it gets when she gets stressed, and I noticed last night that her lymph nodes under her jawline are slightly swollen… she also woke up with a coughing fit this morning (probably due to the lymph nodes). I’m hoping it’s just a little cold, as she’s coming up on 11 in a few months and we’ve had some sudden down-turns for kitties this year…. She’s had a very exciting (good and bad) year this year, having moved twice, lost her bunny-kitten, gained 4 new bunnies, and gone from being nearly 19lbs and having to take anxiety medicine–to being about 13lbs (thanks to a new diet) and not needing the pills anymore.
She’s got about 6 hours before we load her up for the vet… so we’ll see how it goes!
(((((Zoey)))))
I hope it’s just a cold!
(((((Zoey)))))
I hope she’s better in no time <3
Moxie, it SOUNDS pretty and tidy, and it is for a while 5 seconds until the 6 and 2 year old have at it
BunLuv, I hope Josephine is ok <3
LBJ, The way my grandfather told me the stories Krampus was quite the bad guy
Eating the naughty children every year sure scared the bejeebers out of me until my mom decided enough was enough and put an end to the horror stories
Bam, kids are a must for a successful Christmas. I’m lucky that we have a 6 and a 2 year old in our house (and by the time the 2 year old is a teen the 17 year old at least will be married with kids…she’s already basically engaged) so Christmas is a crazy and a good bit of fun
I really, really can’t believe Christmas is almost here! I mean, that’s just crazy!!! Normally the younger kids have school off from Thanksgiving until the New Year, but this year they only get the week of Christmas and the week after off…so that’s making it not feel very ‘Christmas-y’. School should not occur during the holiday season! lol
Thank you LBJ10 she is doing okay, can’t wait for her to put her ear back up ! An injury of the jaw affects the jaw, eye and ear which was the defining symptom necessitating a vet visit.
.jpg)
It snowed here this morning but quickly changed to rain.
Yes I don’t know Bam maybe she nipped into my Baileys ?!?! Nah she has made that jump oodles of times, that extra piece of cardboard was her undoing. Thankfully we didn’t need to find out if a bunnies jaw can be repaired or worse put her to sleep because that would of broken my heart, particularly over something as ridiculous as piece of cardboard ![]()
It was sad to see the girls go but even though the rescue does their best in the ” garage ” the bunnies don’t get much one on one time and of course it is not as cozy as a house setting
I don’t think these will be adopted, I mean they will adopt out if someone wants them but most end up in a colony setting because of the sheer volume of bunnies. I saw them yesterday and they barely recognized me after only one day.
abh – Just because he eats children, doesn’t mean he’s a bad guy.
The eagle at my old job would eat naughty children too. She would talk to me and I would interpret. Pretty sure that’s what she was saying. Hehehehe!
BunLuv – Yep, it’s all connected in there. Does she have any facial paralysis going on?
We had our first Christmas tree “accident”. Paris and Zero were being naughty, running around. They ran right into the tree. It fell out of the stand and knocked over.
Other than that, I’m pretty sure my mom is going to buy me a “toddler tunnel” for christmas, for moxie. Moxie is much too big to fit into regular pet tunnels. ![]()
Oh my Moxie..hopefully you could right the tree
LBJ10..to be honest I’m noticing her face looks worse since taking her in lol. Her eye is swollen a little and runny which it wasn’t before. I’m not sure how I would discern facial paralysis ? Even though I know she will eat hard foods ( she ran up and stole BB’s cookie out of his mouth this morning ) I have been adding boiled hot water to pellets, cookies and banana for her to eat. She also still eats hay and greens. I moved her metacam up an hour so I can observe her for a bit longer before I head to work Yesterday she fell asleep in the litterbox after her dose which she never does.
LBJ- Maybe he’s not such a bad guy…but he was to my four year old little brain! lol. I really want to see the ‘Krampus’ movie…have any of y’all seen it? Is it worth forking over $20 to see it in theaters (theaters out here are soooo overpriced -_-) ?
I’m surprised our tree hasn’t been taken out by my border collie and the two year old yet Moxie
They get so wound up and crazy it’s a miracle they haven’t
I hope that Josephine is back to 100% soon BunLuv!
Today has been quite the day, lol. I’ve had a 2 year old, a 6 year old, and a 14 year old to deal with all day. The 14 year old hid in her room most of the day…except for when I had to bring her to an appointment…but the younger two have been crazy all day! I finally got them to calm down by putting their ‘Elf on a Shelf’ movie on for them while I make dinner (spaghetti and sauce made from scratch with chicken apple sausage). The 2 year old has now made me replay it at least three times *rolleyes* I also had to attempt to get through my online college orientation while watching them and my dog…THAT was interesting ![]()
Krampus was pretty good. The ending.
Moxie – It was bound to happen.
abh – Nope. LOL We haven’t been to a movie in awhile. Regular movies are $12, I think. We used to go to $5 Tuesdays though. Maybe we should do that again.
BunLuv – Wooly has some facial paralysis going on because of his ear infection. My husband joked that he looked like he was having a stroke. I know it when you see it because they are continuously doing this –> =\
Did anyone go for Star Wars tonight?
Thank you abeautifulhope
Her ear is half back up already ! Will be back to not being able to tell them apart in no time. When we left them at the vets to find a coffee while Josephine had her x ray they were writing down the characteristics of each to tell them apart ? I told her, when in doubt weigh them, he is heavier ! Sedating the wrong bunny would be bad, lol.
Chicken apple sausage sounds delicious !
Be thankful you are in an era where you don’t need to rewind VHS tapes when the kids want to watch it over and over again..
Is there supposed to be a picture there LBJ10 ? I don’t think her face is paralyzed. I know she has some difficulties chewing some larger pieces of lettuce because of the width ?
It was bound to happen.
LEL— Not me. Me and my friend are going to have a movie marathon and watch all the old ones first, because neither of us has seen them yet.
Bunluv– Yeah, we were able to get it standing again, and luckily none of the ornaments broke.
(((Vibes))) for Josephine.
LEL: Not yet! I’m heading over there in two hours! So excited. It’s unfortunate that Henry and Claire aren’t fans yet, I’ll work on indoctrinating them into the ways of the force soon
My Brother went to see Krampus, but I’m not that into scary things
Thank you for the vibes Moxie
She was back to hopping up on the couch etc this morning
I just had to persuade her to eat the banana with Metacam on it, smart bunny..I thought Metacam was sweet and they liked it ?
So I was baking chocolate coffee cookies. Lancelot’s previous owners fed him candy and chocolate. He is a sugar fiend and I don’t feed him fruit coz it messes up his belly. The whole house smelled like chocolate cookies. Lancelot started circling me and looking for chocolate. It was so funny. I reached down to pet him and he just whipped around and circled to try to get at my hand. He figured I must have had chocolate in my hand for him. It was so funny. None of the other bunnies react to the smell of anything I cook.
BunLuv – No, no picture. Just this. =\
That’s what his face looked like. His mouth was up on one side and down on the other (hence the slanted mouth face).
LEL – Nope, the crowds are just too much. LOL Plus you have to reserve all your seats at the theaters here now. We figured we’d wait until most people had already seen it so the theater wouldn’t be so crowded.
Vanessa – Wooly has been very insistent about getting his naners in the morning lately. He runs circles around my feet, digs at my shoes, pulls at my pant legs, etc. I’ve never heard of a bunny being crazy for chocolate though. Poor thing, he can never have what he wants.
I can’t believe Christmas is a week away! I can’t finish my Christmas shopping until Christmas eve though. Man this is frustrating. We really had to cut back this year on gifts. We just couldn’t afford to buy a bunch of stuff.
Mailed out some gifts to my niece/nephews/brother/sister-in-law. I also made my brother a home made birthday card. We’re both funny/sarcastic, so on the front of the card it said “I am smiling because you’re my brother…And I am laughing because there’s nothing you can do about it!
” Then I had a “mushy” poem in it I wrote that said “You’re my big brother and that will never change” at the end.
That’s about as creative as I get! lol Hopefully he likes it? IDK.
I made a gingerbread house today (from grahm crackers)…Enough said LOL!
Wow Christmas is in only 6 DAYS 1 HOUR 10 MINUTES AS I POST THIS!
Moxie, that’s sounds so very sweet, what a lovely sister you are =)
Vanessa, my Bam is a chocolate fiend. I think I led him astray by feeding him that terrible bunny-muesli years ago, it had pieces of carob in it. Chocolate coffea cookies sounds so good!
BunLuv, my buns hate Metacam. Medirabbit says it’s “very palatable for rabbits”. Bam and Yohio say it is NOT.
We don’t buy a lot of Christmas presents.
Moxie – I’ve bought my big bro exactly the same !!!!! LOL
In fact it was my Mum who bought it to give to me to give to him !! and we’re not teens !!
He’ll always be your big bro !
I’m packing up to go to London for a week. Seriously, the bunny (and cage, and food and hay!!) takes up more room in the car than me, the cat, and ALL the Christmas presents put together !!!
Lucky bun !! It’s her second time through the Channel Tunnel. The cat’s first !! I hope she adapts to the English language !
For our over-the-pond friends the Channel Tunnel is the under sea tunnel that joins northern France to southern England…. the car goes on a train (with you in it), and it takes 35mins from start to end. Magic !
It beats the ferry hands down (unless you want to see the little island of Britain coming into view because in the tunnel you go down in France and pop up in the UK) , and it’s not weather depedant, (but I take my scuba gear just in case there’s a leak….) LOL
I also am making cookies for some bunnies at a local sanctuary. Normal people cookies too for the workers! And gathering pretty much everything I have bought for my two, who are spoiled and never touch their things, cleaning them, and making a big box to send to the sanctuary, while I run to the pet store and go pick up a few things they need.
And working. Lots of working. And me and the boyfriend are sick too which only adds to this season ugh. =(
It “snowed for real” for the first time this year today. Even though it was only a dusting and is mostly gone now. But It looked like a blizzard, and I took Zero for a run because he loves the snow. =]
Off to an ugly sweater party with my coffee chocolate cookies 🙂 I don’t do big christmas gifts. My BF and I set a dollar limit for eachother, and I make crafty items for my siblings. We have had such a mild autumn this year. Going to be in the 70’s this week again. Can’t believe it. The maple trees are springing new leaves already. But I suspect it might still get cold in Feb/March, and the new leafies will die. Poor trees.
I have Morgana and Avalon outside overnight while I rearrange the floor in their room. Guin and Lancelot are in my bedroom. I’m putting linoleum down, bordering it with 2x4s, adding perches above shelves (poop catchers), and releasing the 19 birds in the rabbit room.
OK – got my ugly sweater out of the wash… off I go. Oh – I won’t be eating the cookies myself – gluten… yuck….
Vanessa, I want pictures of your finished bun/bird room! It sounds awesome!
So I picked up Calypso/Athena (still trying to decide
) today! Before I picked her up me and a couple of the kiddos ran to Placerville and grabbed her a bunch of toys, and my Border Collie some special Christmas cookies. Boy was this bun in for a surprise, lol. I picked her up a couple of willow balls, some apple sticks, a wood hanging toy, a ring toss toy thing, a ring thingy that hangs on the cage, a willow barbell, a lava rock thingy, a couple loofas, some new food (that I’ll slowly start switching her over to tomorrow), a carrot straw/hay chew thing, and a few other things…although I’m saving about half of it for Christmas. Plus my mom grabbed her and Max some toys for Christmas. Just have to make the horse, dog, and bunny treats (although I don’t see why the horse and bunny treats can’t be the same thing? Hmmmm…I’ll have to check my recipe) and then everyone is set for Christmas ??
abh – Good news! It’s been decided for you.
Wow, Christmas is almost here. It just doesn’t feel like it. =\
Yeah I’m exited about the bun/bird room. I have kept bunnies and birds together in an outdoor 240 square foot aviary. It worked just fine. I’m a bit of a bird fanatic. I’ll definitely post pics.
LBJ- lol…I don’t knowwww…so many people are ‘deciding for me’ right now ![]()
Vanessa- I’ve always wanted birds, but they kind of freak me out
I have gotten in the middle of bloody dog fights and had a dog latch onto my arm on accident and continued to pull them apart (and jumped into another dog fight a few weeks later without thinking about it)…I even have the scar from it, but a bird looks at me funny? I nope out of there so fast ![]()
I love birds. I miss the the birds at my old job so much. They were all so sweet, even the grumpy ones.
abh – That’s what happens when you mention bunny names around here. ![]()
How do you keep that many birds together with the buns, without the buns getting to eat things they shouldn’t? I have to fight and block off a lot of stuff just to keep them from not eating seeds and bird poop with the one cockatiel. 😮 Pics would be awesome when you get it set up.
I keep the bird food off the ground. The birds do mess food on the ground, but the quail eat it, and the bunnies ignore it. The bird food hangs i feeders about 5 feet off the ground. The birds arent interested in the bunny food. The birds do raid the litterboxes and hay rack for nest-building material. They make such intricate nests I give them wicker nests, but they also weave nests in the potted plants. The mousebird eats fruit, which the bunnies would want. So again – I hang it 5 feet from the ground. They all share water. In the aviary, I had a water dish with a float, hooked up to the outside faucet. So it was always refilling, and I dumped it out and wiped it clean once a week. In the house, I’ll use a 300gph filter with 4 fine, 1 course, ball media, ceramic media, carbon filter, and uv light, to keep the waterfall water clean. I grow plants for the critters – herbs/veggies fr the bunnies, and grasses and millet for the birds. The plants all have to be kept out of the bunnies reach or they will finish them in no time. I have full spectrum lights in the room to keep the plants healthy.
It is quite an intricate arrangement. Outside – I placed the bunny chill spots out from under the perches. Birds don’t poop everywhere, the poop where they perch. So in the room – I’m wrapping 1-foot wide shelves all the way around the walls, to catch the poop. The perches will be a few inches above the shelves. No perches from wall to wall – they must fly to the other side., and poop on the shelf.
I also have an air purifier in the room…
Cockatiels are soooooooooo messy. My bf is moving in with his 4 cockatiels. To help keep the cockatiel food away from the bunnies, it will be on the closet. I converted the closet to a two-story bird cage. The birds will eat on the upper level (cage) and that should help contain the mess.
:-)))
Haha yes, cockatiels are messy. Mine THROWS his food out his cage (he has a large flight cage on a stand) … so seed ends up all the way across the room. Which, I then have to vacuum up, or Powder is right on it. My cockatiel also wants to eat the bunny pellets, which the buns do not appreciate and then it becomes them chasing him trying to pin him to the ground with their chins and him running (running, not flying) away screaming. He doesn’t fly til they get too close for comfort, even though he’s got his full wings. For salads, the tiel wants to eat with the bunnies, so I had to start giving him a little pile of their salads off to the side far enough away they won’t be mad at him, but close enough he’ll feel like he’s eating with them. And he poops EVERYWHERE.. he’ll land on the floor just to poop. So, I have to vacuum that up too, or the buns try to eat it. Sounds like the other birds are a lot neater than mine. ![]()
Hi folks, mind if I join in? I’m Ally. I’m 32, a preschool teacher, and I am American but I live/work in Germany.
I just got my first pair of bunnies. We’ve had a really heinous year and I’m so glad we’re going out of it with these sweet little buns on board. Their names are Bennigan and Lucy (my 4 year old son named them, no idea where he got either name but they were cute so I went with it.) Bennigan is a neutered male holland lop and Lucy is as as-of-yet unaltered lionhead mix female. We’ll be having her spayed around February our vet just wants her to put on a little more size.
Is that Bennigan in your avatar? Cutie. Welcome. ![]()
Welcome BunnyAlly!
Thanks very much! Yes that is my Benni. I think he is a super hunky bunny!
Bennigan is adorable <3
And LBJ, so far it’s looking like we’re going with Calypso
How about ‘Calypso Brigid’ for her full name? ![]()
I suppose Brigid Calypso has a nice ring to it. Hehehehe!
Mhmmmm, I do agree that CALYPSO Brigid is the perfect name
Hehehe!
I’m simply exhausted. I spent the night at a friend’s house Saturday. So I’m still tired.
Nope, I can’t believe it’s just a few mere days until Christmas. ![]()
Hi BunnyAlly, welcome to the forums. ![]()
Hi from the UK where I’ve settled in bun in a greeeeat run – I call it Fort Knox
I’ve put two dog cages opposite each other 6 foot apart and made a closed in run with barriers going from one cage to the other – they are the playpen barriers which are 110cm high and cable tied to the cages (so they don’t move) – HAH she can’t get out of that !!! – both cages are open of course and the middle has a carpet in it – so she’s not cramped in and is running from one end to the other – brilliant !!!
The only thing I didn’t think of before cable tying it all was how I was going to get in to give her cuddles !!
I have to go through the side door on the cages – on all fours !!!!!! LOL oops
The cat is settling in well too to Mum & Dad’s house – I let her discover one room at a time…. it was fun seeing her walk around fast once, sniffing and exploring and then going around again from one piece of furniture to the next and rubbing her cheeks and her bum and scenting everything – several times !!!!!
It’s so mild here I can’t believe it’s Christmas week…..
I’ve just hit 4000 posts. Sheesh. ![]()
That is a lot of posts LEL
I’m sure all of which benefited others on here !
Since beginning volunteer work at the rescue it seems like time is flying by![]()
Normally the house is done and I’m sitting back waiting for Christmas. There are two days left and I’ve yet to finish shopping ! Mind you the last bit isn’t a big deal really. Josephine is recovering nicely only a couple of days left of medication though to me her face looks lopsided still ? Perhaps her upper cheek is still swollen.
I had some new arrivals Friday night, three new post spays. I have a picture of two but the third is camera/people shy. She was only brought in off the streets a week ago. I hope to spend more time with them as soon as things slow down to show her that people can be good ![]()
.jpg)
The black one they think was a dumped house bunny as she is quite tame. The coloring on the other little girl is quite stunning !
I sold a 8.5 ounce tin of my baked bunnies cookies today in Christmas shapes. Going to a little bunny for his first Christmas ![]()
I plan to bring an entire batch out to the rescue on Boxing day when I go out to help.
I hope everyone has a great Christmas/Holidays ![]()
So I released the birds into the bunny room today. It took them a few hours to find their bearings and figure out where the walls/windows are. I have half the shelves/perches up, still working on the rest. The finches and bourkes came out of their cages, and returned to roost. The mousebird came out briefly, got a fright, and flew strait back in. Wouldn’t come out again. Guin was petrified. My biggest and fattest bunny – petrified She moved quicker than I’v seen her move ever. Ran strait for her black corrugated 8-inch tunnel and hid. One of the tiniest finches was on her cardboard box. Freaked her out. I guess she forgot that she used to live outside in the bird aviary with the exact same birds… Morgana and Avalon were wary. Poor Lancelot had his teeth filed today, so he wasn’t feeling that alert/happy. But nothing bothers him anyway. I can’t find my camera… once the room is done I’ll use my bf’s phone to take a pictures.
The past couple of days have been crazy…and the next few are going to be even more so! We have an insane amount of wrapping to get done…and I’ve been so busy that I haven’t even had time to bond/hang out with Calypso for more than a minute or two once or twice a day
And my insomnia is being such a bugger currently. I’m sorry body, but sleeping for only 3-4 hours a night on a really good night is just not cutting it anymore
I’m also really into the show Dexter and have been binge watching the bejeebers out of it until a new episode of Supernatural comes out. I think my family is starting to question my sanity…my favorite shows are Psych, Supernatural, Criminal Minds, Last Man Standing, and Dexter. It’s a strange conglomerate ![]()
Moxie, I can’t believe it’s so close either! Thursday we’re having Christmas at my dad’s, and then we’re spending it with my mom on Christmas day. Although my dad’s tagging along, and not every one is all that thrilled about it (they’re in the middle of a divorce of his doing? It’s very confusing how he acts most of the time tbh)
Vienna, I’m glad that y’all made it to the UK in one piece and that every one seems to be doing well!!!
BunLov, I wish I could get into fostering/volunteering at a rescue…it seems both difficult, and very rewarding ![]()
Vanessa, I can’t wait for the pictures!
@ abeautifulhope – Dexter s good. I finished all the eposodes. I also binge-watch fro s1e1. I’ve watched 2-half men, sons of anarchy, breaking bad, rules of engagement, criminal minds, merlin, and now I’m watching game of thrones, longmire, hell on wheels, boardwalk empire, the big bang theory, and weeds. Not much into supernatural. I started watching true blood, until they left the vampire theme and introduced spirits.
@Bunlov, volunteering at a rescue does sound very rewarding. Good on you.
abh— Well hopefully it’ll all work out and you guys will have a great day together.
Wow it’s so warm for end of December! I want my snow!
![]()
Congrats LEL.![]()
Our fish we’ve had for 7 years died today. He was just a shiner “Bait fish” we rescued as kids. My little sister is very upset, his death was pretty traumatic. My little sister was the one who found him. She ran downstairs screaming and sobbing that he was dying. My dad tried to save him (splashing the water with his hand, trying to get him to keep moving, stay up ect.) but there was nothing that could be done. He was the first “real animal rescue” me and my sisters did, and it kinda feels like a part of our childhood is gone now. My sister won’t even go upstairs right now because she doesn’t want to see the empty tank. Whenever we’d walk past he would jump out of the water and you’d hear a “splash”. He was a good fish. He got to be pretty big, several inches long.
I never thought I’d feel sad about a fish being dead because sometimes fish freak me out. Although it’s not the same as the death of one of our other pets.
RIP Mr.RainbowFins
Thank you Vanessa and abeautifulhope it is very rewarding ! ![]()
I’m curious Vanessa, don’t birds poop up high ?!?! Pigeons do for sure lol.
So I took Josephine aka Princess pretty pants to the bunny guru in my city because of how her face looked...jpgR.jpg)
I was concerned her jaw was either indeed broken or a tooth or something. No, after cleaning the wax out of her ear pus was discovered. Apparently her fall caused the ” plug ” of wax and pus to dislodge. She has had an ear infection for quite some time the vet feels and even months of antibiotics wouldn’t be of any benefit now. The facial issue is caused by nerve damage done by the infection ? Oddly she has never fussed over that ear in the six months I’ve had her.
She said maybe her face was just more noticeable now BUT I have a million pictures and even as little as a few weeks ago her face was fine. She said her ear will be chronic and need to be cleaned. She said ” we ” will have to clean it so I’m guessing them, not sure how often though. I was so happy her eyes, teeth and jaw were intact it was all I could think about
She didn’t need sedation, x rays or metacam so now I have an issue with that vet, but is the rescues vet. Seriously think the guy should offer a refund, not sure how he missed a simple ear infection.
I try to always err on the positive side of life, so all the BS aside, my baby is safe and relatively healthy and that is what really matters.
Moxie-meadow – I’m sorry about yoru fish 🙁
So birds do poop up high… ocasionally, rarely, finches poop just before or after landing. But they don’t really poop in flight like some other birds do. The poop where they perch. I only put perches around the perimiter of the room, and I’m putting a 12″ wide shelfe ujdner the entire length of the walls, to catch poop from the perches. I do have to do some basic geometery and figure out how far off the shelfthe pop woudl land if the perch were very high from the shelf. So I keep the perches close to the shelf. The shelf has a sheet cut to size so I can wash it after it has caught poops. By keeping the perches around the perimiter only – no perches spannign the center of the room – I limit where the poop lands. And the birds get to fly from wall to wall, which is good for them. The bourkes are an exception – they spend evenings and early mornings on the ground. So they do leave some poop on the ground, but not a whole lot. The cockatiels are arivingany day now… Those are messy creatures. My mousebird is also messy as far as poop goes. She only eats fruit – so the pop comes out 15 minutes after eating – and looks very much like it did going in! They also poop where they perch, but they get more lateral distance since they shoot it out like chickens do! But most of the time – the mousebird is hanging on a vertical wall. They don’t really perch . They hang… it’s quite interesting. So the wall that they hang from, collects poop. I have 1 “mousebird wall” up, and tomorrow I’ll put more up. I staple plastic to the walls, and make a large NIC cube wall on top of the plastic, so the mousebird can hand on the NIC cube wall, and poop against the plastic. Once a week I go in there with a scrub brush and clean off the plastic. The plastic reaches down to the shelf, so if the poop drips and drips, and the cleaning sopa/water drips, it lands on the shelf. Intricate logistics…
Yes – ocasionally the finches poop on the floor while they are hopping about exploring their suroundings. Their poops are miniscule. And mostly concentrated under the perches.
I’m a pro on bird poop!
I’m arranging a purchase of a pair of white cheeked turaco. They are also fruit eaters, os messy poop, but they poop mid-flight. So they are staying outside in the 240 square foot aviary.
BunLuv – Oh no! I guess you know now what I was talking about earlier when I mentioned facial paralysis. Just like Wooly. =\ That is so strange that it went undetected for so long and only now she is showing signs. Poor baby. The damage may or may not be permanent. Even if it’s permanent, it can improve over time.
Vanessa – I’m rather amused that you wrote a giant paragraph about bird poop.
OMG, Christmas is almost here! What the heck happened? I mean, 2016 is just around the corner. What happened to 2015?
Oh I thought the bunnies and birds were living in one room hence the question about poop landing them !
Yes LBJ I thought this afternoon ” Oh THIS is what she means about paralysis. ” Well she only seems to have issue with some greens on that one side due to a lack of a functioning lip ? It would be nice for her sake if it was temporary, for me it just makes her all the more special
I am wondering how the infection is supposed to go away without treatment ? She took my hand and showed me the area to watch for an abscess.
Poor little thing is all greasy from the ointment the vet put in her ears, lol. BB just sniffs her and says ” Yeah I’m not licking that ” and hops away.
I know what you mean about Christmas. Present wise I’m good but the rest, way behind.
You have bourkes? Oh, I am jealous. I’ve wanted one, but there is nowhere to find one anywhere near where I live.
We need pictures of your birds! Good luck with the tiels when they arrive! Mine not only wants to leave poop all over the floor for the buns to eat, but he also wants to EAT the buns poops out of their litter boxes haha I can’t let him in their room unsupervised, he goes right to the box and starts picking up poop.
LBJ – Well, you’ll probably find a lot of poop talk from bird owners, on the bird forum I am on there is “poopology” talk cause if you don’t watch their droppings, you can miss an illness. One paragraph is nothing! ![]()
LEL- Congrats
That’s a lot of posts. You could probably compile a Rabbit Help book with all those posts!
Moxie- I’m so sorry
Although not as complex as our little land babies, fish are more complex than most people give them credit for. I used to have a little fish named Wave who would always “follow” whoever was in the room by swimming to the closest side of his tank. He would splash excitedly when it was feeding time. Although you may never have been able to touch him, you still feel like something important is missing from your home. 7 years is a wonderful length of life for a rescued fish.
Swim in peace Mr.RainbowFins
Vanessa/LBJ- Well we certainly have enough paragraphs on Bunny poop on this site. What’s one more species for the poop paragraphs?
It seems poop is the best indicator of health in many species, including humans.
BunLuv- Poor Baby, I would feel very suspicious about my vet if she missed something like that as well. I’m glad nothing is broken! Even if the damage never fully goes away, she’ll still be able to get into all that fun mischief ![]()
That’s why I was amused. There are always huge paragraphs on here about bunny poop. LOL
BunLuv – Yeah, I had to help Wooly a little bit by providing him with small pieces of lettuce to eat. He loved eating dried willow leaves though. They were easy for him to get in his mouth for some reason.
I’ve been home 8 days. My Aunt was left in charge of my grandmother’s care, with my mom helping out. So far, her sugar has dropped out twice. Two meals have been messed up by 1/2 the carb amounts. She’s double dosed on her pills once. And her anti-depressant has gone missing.
… and yet they won’t take my advice and call the number I left bookmarked for trying to get a medicare paid for nurse part-time to help out. And they won’t even entertain the idea of a nursing home, because my grandmother wouldn’t like it. The woman can’t remember what day it is. Or whether she’s had breakfast/lunch/dinner. Is having … whatever attacks (“seizure like activity” that isn’t neurologically showing signs of seizure activity so they won’t call it seizures). Walks like she is drunk 24/7 now, can barely make it from the front door to the car. And the 3 months I was down there, it was a full time job from 8am to 12am taking care of her.
Wow, tomorrow is Christmas Eve. (It’s already Christmas Eve in some places already). ![]()
Uhg, I’m coming down sick. Right before Christmas too. :^P
So I never knew out west(?) people call soda “coke”. Like they’ll say “Rootbeer Coke” or “Pepsi Coke”. Somebody I know who’s been staying out there for College asked me to get them a glass of “Orange Coke” and I was SO Confused! LOL
![]()
Well I feel terrible. How long has she had this infection ? She flopped today and I can’t recall the last time she did so. She is not a big flopper but I think it was been at least six weeks ? She is laying all open and stretched out now where she hasn’t for awhile now. I clearly need to pay more attention to detail. Unfortunately she had to suffer facial damage because of my neglect
I thought if they are eating and pooping and still wanting pets and kisses they must be fine. There clearly are far more signs to watch for in regards to health and happiness. My little girl still gives me kisses and trusts me, hopefully I will never let her down again.
Yes LBJ I should perhaps make her pieces smaller. Yes hard things are easy lol..she still attacks my cookies and the hay cubes with a vengeance !
That sucks you are coming down with something at this time Moxie ! Though most people are stressed which lowers the immune system and illness occurs more frequently at this time.
Errr we call soda pop here, but coke after every type of pop ? Seems downright weird..

Oh I thought the bunnies and birds were living in one room hence the question about poop landing them !![]()
Yes – they are living in one room! I’m just makign elaborate arrangements at poop containment for the bunnies dignity.
@stickerbunny – there are bourkes to be found – if you are willing to ship. I’ve shipped many birds from one coast to the other. Via airplane, and United States Postal Service. No complaints either way. Bird shipping containers are either boxes with ventilation and insulation, or cat carriers with shade cloth and insulation. They always have food, and a water container glued down, with a sponge in it to help contain the water. If I receive birds via USPS, I let the post office know I’m receiving that day, but they always call as soon as the birds arrive, and I pick them up within the hour. For air shipping, I arrive at the cargo department to pick them up. USPS takes 2 days from California to Virginia. I give them electrolytes for 5 days. I’ve never lost a bird from shipping. Once I received an empty shipping box! On April 1! I called bacl and asked if it was an April Fools joke. They got the box all ready with for and water and millit spray, but forgot to add the birds. Once they did an inventory chek – they realized they had more birds than their books accounted for…
Cats – yeesh. When I was still living in South africa, I worked at many natuire parks. I was a park ranger. One of my jobs was to raise lions. I raised 36 lions. We gave them deworming tablets. They were big enough that I could get them ina sitting position, straddle their shoulders with their head facing forward, stick my fingers in the convenient gap between the molars to open the jaw, and shove a tablet down their mouths. Then hold the jaws closed with the head tilted up, and whallah! Tablet swallowed.
Domestic cats are so much smaller, it’s way easier to forcefeed a lion then a domestic cat!
Humming birds are col. I’ve been thinking about loking for some… mousebirds (I have one) also go into a torpid state if they get too cold. Although they are super resillient. I know a guy whose mousebirds are fledging chicks in sub-20 degree weather. But they need other mousebirds to help keep warm. They don’t perch. They hang, and bunch up together for snuggly warmth.
I’ve always been kinda scared to have birds shipped. Where I live, there is a very short window of “normal” weather most years. It ranges from 114 in summer to 16 in winter, with a super short spring. The nearest airport is 100+ miles away and my local post office can’t even find my hay deliveries and usually beat up my boxes so bad I wouldn’t order anything fragile via post, so I am like “Do I trust them with a living creature…?” … I know breeders do it all the time and they say it’s perfectly safe, but I am so paranoid with animals. I’d feel awful if anything happened to one cause I ordered it shipped to me.
The bourkes are lovely though and I heard they get along with tiels pretty well (different cages, of course).
I bet that empty box freaked you out. 😮
My birds are all in 1 room. The tiels are joining them tomorrow. Tiels are gentle birds, although thay can sure bite. Bourkes don’t have much beak strength. My nearest airport is 80 miles away, so I prefer USPS. My temps range from 105 in summer to 5 in winter. Breeders don’t typically ship if it is freezing, and I’m sure there is also a max temp that they won’t ship above. The bourkes are easily my favorite. I have 3 males and 1 female. I’m about to purchase 2 more females…, along with an owl finch, and for the outdoor aviary (240 square feet), I’m getting 1 male red bishop, 1 male yellow biship, and 3 females for each. Bishops (weavers) do best with multiple hens. I’m also getting apair of turaco. Birds are such an obsession. I’m also searchign far and wide for a male speckled mousebird. Talk about rare in USA aviculture…
Yeah, tiels are… supposed to be gentle birds, docile by nature and do best with other docile birds. I don’t think mine got that memo though. He chases my 8lb REW male around the house, wings out and beak open, for daring to touch my feet (which, OK, should not be funny but omg watching a bird waddle across the floor chasing a rabbit is hilarious, but yes I stop him, poor bunny). And has dive bombed my spouse, biting the blood out of his face, for daring to enter the room. And if my spouse tries to give me a kiss, he is in between us biting us both. lol I’m actually not 100% certain he’d do well with any other bird. He has the personality of a chihuahua, in a cockatiel body. And a jealous streak that I have to constantly work with him on just to get him to NOT want to kill every other living being in the house, besides me (he won’t even bite me hard, he just nibbles to show he’s annoyed). Would love to see some pictures of your birds though, sounds like you have a very nice variety. ![]()
Sorry, time for a rant. LOL I’m really pissed at the rude family member my husband has. His aunt passed away a year and a half ago. His parents have been inviting his uncle over to holidays because he is all alone on many of them (even though his one kid lives here). Well one of his other kids and their family decided to come home for Christmas this year so they could spend time with him. These would be my husband’s cousins, in case you’re confused. LOL Anyway, my mother-in-law had invited my husband’s uncle over. And then she invited the family that is coming to town as well. The family that lives here was invited too, but said they may or may not come. So my mother-in-law had worked for DAYS and my husband was over at their house late last night trying to get this project finished so there would be a place to set up a big table for all of the people coming over. My mother-in-law bought SO MUCH FOOD. She spent yesterday cooking a giant ham and making soup. Everyone was supposed to come over tonight (Christmas Eve). Then at about noon today, they called and said they weren’t coming. The family that lives here decided to have them all over at their house instead (and our family isn’t invited). Seriously? Seriously?! How incredibly rude!
Oh yeah, and I took today off of work so I could go over to my in-laws’ house early to help my husband finish some things up before everyone came. If I would have known that, then I would have gone to work instead of missing a day (I don’t get holiday pay you know).
LBJ, that’s really not nice. Not nice one bit!
I hope you’ll still have a merry Christmas. I’m almost thinking your Christmas will be much better without those guests! Hopefully a lot of the food can be frozen so it won’t go to waste. You can make lots of yummy dishes with ham that aren’t Christmassy.
I’ve just gone to bed after a rather quiet (no kids) but nice Christmas Eve. Gave Yohio extra kisses good night because he’s in the bathroom and I’m in the bedroom. He was tooth-purring like a little machine =)
Well, that was rude. But, whatever. Lots of leftovers for you guys to enjoy without the annoying family!
I found a broken glass smoking pipe in the bag of shavings we bought for the chickens bedding. =/
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!!! It’s only 8:45 pm on Christmas Eve here, but I know it’s already Christmas in some places.
Sorry LBJ10, that is so frustrating and hurtful. I hope you still have a merry christmas.
Happy Christmas everyone!
For christmas, my boyfriends cockatiels got a new birdroom 🙂 Brought the birds over today. I strung an inch-thick cotton rope up for them (they used it in their former bird room), so they can move around and reach the feeding area without flying. 2 fly, 2 have clipped wings. They grow their flight feathers back slowly. The first day of new birds is always scary for the existing birds. Everytime the cockatiels flap their wings, all the other birds fly around in mad circles. Avalon and Morgana are still fine with it. Lancelot who I swore was deaf – was thumping his feet at the cockatiels. Guin hides in the second level of her condo. The condo wraps around the wall. It’s really cool. Took about 8 boxes of NIC cubes. I put my camera in one of those “safe places” – the kind that is so safe that I haven’t found it yet… still looking…
I put a 4ft flourescent light in the top of the closet/feed station, and I added a NIC panel frame over the window so I can open the curtains without birds flying into the window.
When I in the room, Guin presses her nose against the NIC cube on the second level asking me to feed her through the NIC cube. It’s so cute. So I pass greens to her. She does come out and play on her 3rd level – and leaves me stray poops of proof that she comes out of hiding, but she won’t hang out at the dividing fence like she used to – since the birds like to perch there. Silly bunny. She used to live in the outdoor bird aviary and was fine with it. Anyway – I don’t do much disturbing in the room after lights out, coz birds get night-fright and flap around all crazy. Lights don’t help. Once they are asleep, they need to stay asleep. So I keep the lights on till about 8pm in winter, and 9pm in summer (to match the summer sunset), so I can go in without disturbing the birds.
I clipped the cockatiels claws before releasing them. They squawked blue murder.
It’s been so warm here. In 2010 we had snow in December. We normally get snow maybe January, but definitely Feb, March, and April. It was 70 degrees today. Crazy.
The burkes like to perch on the ceiling fans. It’s so cute. I don’t use the fan anymore…
Wow vanessa, this whole thing sounds rather impressive. You’ll need to find that camera.
b
Things were fine tonight. There was a ridiculous amount of food, but it was fine. I guess I’m over it. I just can’t believe how incredibly rude they were. I was actually looking forward to seeing the family from out of town. We haven’t seen them since my husband’s aunt’s funeral. Oh well, I suppose it shouldn’t matter now. I hope everyone else has a merry Christmas!
I’m glad you had a merry Christmas, LBJ! I ended up sleeping in the bathroom, on a mattress, I was a little worried about Yohio, he didn’t eat much yesterday. I heard him eat during the night though. He really ought to have a bonded friend, he has an endless need of cuddles.
Vanessa, your menagerie of birds and buns sounds so awesome!
Hope everyone is having a good Christmas.
I’m sitting here amazed at the complexity of bunnies. Guin was super snuggly with Merlin. Now she nips at any bunny who doesn’t give her sufficient attention. She used to be fine living in an aviary. Now she pretends it’s frightening. I suppose she was afraid at first, but then she discovered that if she presses her nose against the NIC cube panels in the second level, I will feed her through the panels. So now when I’m in the room, she scurries up to the second level and pretends to be afraid of the birds, and begs for me to feed and pet her. When I come in to change the litter boxes, she rushes up to my feet and sticks to me like Velcro. Who wouldn’t give her loving and petting? But if I sneak a look after lights out, she is sprawled out on the floor, lying up against the divider fence that the birds perch on, running up the ramp to the 3rd level, leaving me tell tale stray poops of where she has been. I’ll let her keep her secret.
Merry Christmas 🙂
@newbunnyowner123 how is your bunny doing with her giant collar?
Merry Christmas everyone ![]()
Spent Christmas eve with my sons and their girlfriends and of course the bunnies hopping all over everyone
Until we penned them at 2 am to put the gifts under the tree.
LBJ that was totally rude of your cousins ![]()
Bam I hoope Yohio is okay ?
Vanessa I want to see this room !
Santa ( aka my younger son ) left this for the bunnies
.jpgRESIZE.jpg)
The toys are from Mama of course ![]()
Hi guys! Sorry I have been an inactive kind of newbie. Christmas rush was rough this year. We had a nice day today, though. I had the bunnies out when company arrived and was prepared to shut them in when they went inside their cage and even shut the door to the bunny room if necessary but the little stinkers never went inside their house. The bunny room opens into the living room where we were and they stared at us the entire time and climbed up on their various perches for a better view. I guess they like parties as long as they are observing only.
Anyway, yesterday and my son made a rather inexpert cardboard castle. It was made with love. I snapped a grainy pic of Lucy enjoying her status as Queen of All She Surveys.
That,s an awesome castle!
LBJ, really? No words.
Family is a relative term.
Christmas was good today. I got a new fish tank.
(Although I felt kinda guilt because our fish died a few days ago.) I have to purchase the stand, gravel, fish, food/decorations and certain drops myself though. All I got was the tank/Filter/Lights and some drops to de-chlorine(?) the water.
ANYWAY, does anybody know how long fish are supposed to float in their bag, in the tank until their water is the same temp so you can put them in? ![]()
Yeah, well, I guess no reason to stew about it now. It’s nice to know others agree that it wasn’t a nice thing to do.
BunnyAlly – That castle is great!
BunLuv – Aww, what wonderful gifts!
The boys were not amused by my attempt to play Santa. I wrapped a willow ring, placed it in the middle of the bunny room and walked away. A few seconds later, I heard rustling. I peeked through the door and Leopold was throwing the package across the room. He could smell the willow ring, but couldn’t figure out why it was wrapped in paper. Wooly just sat watching with a bewildered look as Leopold continued to throw the package around. LOL
Moxie – How long? As long as it takes. LOL Um, I don’t know, I would always let it sit in there for 10-15 minutes. It probably wasn’t perfect, but close enough where it didn’t shock them.
What a cool castle !!
LBJ— That’s it? I don’t know why I was expecting some long amount of time like 24 hours.
Now that I think about it though, when we had fish we probably had them floating for around 20 minutes or so. I’ll ask my dad. He knows a good amount about fish, and is most likely the one who’s gonna help me set it up. ![]()
Hmmm … I just asume that the store selling fish have them at a decent temp (78-ish), and I shock them.. Dump them right in… My water doesn’t stay the same temp every day anyway. The temp depends on the ambient air temp. I do have a heater in the aquariam, but it heats the water relative to the ambient temp. That’s why in summer I can turn it up, and in inter I can actually turn it down, if I have the wood stove going. That’s how many fish tank heaters work. So – since my fish tank is never the same temp from day to day, and it doesn’t shock my fish, I go ahead and dump the new fish in… Never had a problem with it. That’s just my experience…
I plan on getting a couple fancy goldfish, I don’t know if that makes a difference. But I am not exactly amazing with fish, so I plan on doing everything I can in my power right, to keep them alive… ![]()
I’d get a “starter goldfish” to poop in the new tank, run it for a month to establish good bacteria. Then get the fish you want to get.
*sigh* Leopold is acting like his tummy hurts.
I gave him some gas drops and rubbed his tummy. I could feel some poop in there, not a lot. As usual, he was rather unappreciative. I offered him a piece of banana afterward and he took it so I’m not horribly worried. Wooly seemed reluctant to eat his bedtime pellets, but I think it’s because Leopold was acting disinterested.
(((((Leopold)))))
It’s such a relief when they take a treat after gas drops and a tummy rub.
Thanks Bam! He seems much better this morning. Their pellets were gone and they both came running over to beg for treats the second they saw me. =)
Vanessa– That sounds like a good idea, but it’s kinda impractical considering we are going to be driving 2+ hours to get my fish (it’s the only place that sells them and I don’t want to order online.) also the traffic is bad because the shop is in a big city. So I’d hate to make the trip twice if I can avoid it. But thanks for the advice, I need as much as I can get!
But I am honestly SO EXCITED! I’ve wanted my own fish tank for years, and fancy goldfish are so cute!
Thursday (December 31st) I am getting a stand/gravel/decorations and other necessities like a water testing kit (tank came with starter drops and filter/lights). I’ll then let it sit to “cycle” or whatever it’s called, for a few days. I’ll most likely be picking out my fish on January 3rd. I’ll be picking out 2 because that’s really all my tank can hold. It’s a 20 gallon but I’ll be upgrading when they start to get bigger. I can’t wait. I might name one “Bubbles”. My sister thinks I should name one “Squishy” from the finding nemo scene where Dory finds a baby jellyfish.
Anyway, so I am taking name suggestions.
I’m thinking maybe a gender neutral name, although I was also thinking Albert.
IDK, but no food names. LOL
I might wait to name them until I’ve had them a few days so I know they most likely won’t die. We’ve never had great luck with fish (we usually did tropical fish) so my mom says I’m not allowed to name them, because she doesn’t want me getting overly attached, but we all know that’s not going to happen.
LOL
(((((((Leopold))))))))
Hello from the home of Lucy and Benni!
Yesterday was their two week take home anniversary. We had a breakthrough in that they now take their fresh food from my hands. Yay!
Touching is still a no go. Humans do not touch buns. No. Bun touching bad.
Benni has turned out to have a flair for home improvement and hasn’t let off making renovations to the cardboard castle since I put it up. The whole floor has a carpet of cardboard shreds. I’m glad he’s happy. He seems to have had a rough go of it when he was in “general population” before we took him home. He had a few nip marks on his ears the vet pointed out and they’re healed but I guess they’re here to stay. I’m not worried about it they give him character, but I was worried it might have impacted him emotionally. I was nervous about Lucy bullying him since she’s definitely a dominant kind of doe but they have been so sweet to one another. I think they were a bun match made in heaven I’m so glad I decided to take her instead of holding out for a female holland lop.
Moxie – I had a fancy goldfish (with the double fins) when I was a kid. His name was Mickey. He had a big pot belly. My mom loved him because he was so easy going. She would stick the net in to scoop him up and he would just go right in! He wouldn’t flop or struggle as she moved him to a little fish bowl while she cleaned his tank. Not like the bettas my brother had that would avoid the net at all costs and then try to commit fishy suicide. =\ Mickey was a good fish, who lived for many years. He would come to the surface and you could pet him with your finger too. =)
And thanks for the Leopold vibes. He seems fine now. This isn’t unusual for him. Every once in awhile he’ll get a tummy ache. I’ll give him gas drops and a tummy rub and he usually snaps out of it by the next morning. Still makes me worry each time though! LOL
BunnyAlly – There are a few no touchy bunnies around. It will take time, but I’m sure they will warm up to you in their own way. Taking food from your hand is good. Nothing like food for motivation!
How cute LBJ.
Vote on 2 fish names and suggest here: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/143769/Default.aspx
My girl is still a no touch bun most days. Occasionally she’ll be like “OK human, pet me, but ONLY UNTIL I SAY STOP THEN LEAVE ME ALONE”… just give them time. ![]()
Moxie, if you don’t have time to cycle a tank with a starter fish, then just keep on top of the water readings. Nitrates and Nitrites are important to test, but ammonia is crucial. Until the tank gets a good colony of bacteria, the poops won’t be gobbled up, and will turn into ammonia. I’m sure you know this already – my first tank, I didn’t check as often as I should have. You might have to clean it once a week or so for the first month, until enough bacteria establish and the ammonia levels stop creeping up. With only two fish, that’s not a lot of waste. I started with 30 fish in a new tank…
Vanessa— How often would you suggest I test, and how much water do you normally change? Some people say don’t change more than 20%, some say you can change 80% of the water ect.
Initially I would test once or twice a week for the first month. I change 20-30%. I would never go more than half. It gets rid of too many beneficial bacteria.
Moxie – I’ sure you understand the amonia principal. Bacteria digest the food/poop waste and everyone is happy. Without enough beneficial bacteria, the food/poop waste isn’t digested the same, and the end result is amonia. Bye-bye fish. That’s why 80% is a bad idea.
Thanks, guys! I don’t really mind their no touchy rule. They’re fun to interact with in other ways. It’s kind of hard to imagine being able to scratch them and pet them at this point but if it happens great, if it doesn’t I’ll take them on their terms. They don’t flee when I enter the room and they come up to me for treats so I figure that’s a win for two weeks in.
I had to go out again for pellets. Phew. I’ll be glad when they age out of unlimited pellets these guys eat LOADS. Anyway I bought them a nifty tunnel while I was at it and a hard plastic jingle ball. Lucy loves the jingle ball my mother swore she’d be scared of it.
My four year old son has a raging stomach virus. I’m perched by his bed with bucket in hand. Nothing hones your ninja skills like a vomiting child.
Moxie – I wouldn’t replace more than half during normal maintenance. If there’s a serious problem with the tank, then you might want to start over. Otherwise, it’s good to keep the existing microflora.
I got some drops for “new tanks” with bacteria that helps get rid of ammonia and nitrate(? it’s something like that). Hopefully it works. There’s no guarantee it didn’t get frozen or something when you buy from stores like walmart.
I’ve read about those drops, never tried them myself. Half a tank is something you might do if you had a very high amonia level. Normal changes should stick to 20-30. When you cycle your tank, be sure to use a quick-start cycling mix (if you don’t have it already).
Another note about amonia – and ich – just my experience. The instructions on ich medication typically says – remove the carbon filter (as it filters out the medication), and use full dose for regular fish, and half dose for sensitive/scaleless fish. Change 20% tank every second day. But… I found that without the carbon filter, I couldn’t maintain decent amonia levels. So when I treat for ich, I leave the carbon filter in, and use a full dose, and still do the recommended water changes. I can’t esplain biologically why that is, but that was my experience.
Moxie, it is sometimes difficult to decide what is a good number to use for percent water to change. The numbers you see here are all numbers I would abide by. But – it does depend on how each individual fish tank reacts. In the beginning it is a bit scary trying to make sure the tank cycles and the fish survive the first month, but over time you’ll get used to how many times a month yoru tank needs changed, and how much water. I started once a week, then as the flora increased, I did twice a week, then every 3 weeks, and now every 4 weeks. I knew to back off and change less often – because the amonia started to creep up. Counter-intuitive – but changing too frequently for the amount of organisms in my tank, I was reducing the bacteria level and causing the waste to turn to ammonia. So I change 30% once a month, and I change the carbon filter twice a month. I have 30 inches of fish in a 30 gallon tank.
Okay, thanks for all the advice Vanessa!
I’m really excited, but scared. When we had fishtanks (the rescue shiner doesn’t count) I was not old enough to do them, so my parents took care of them. They never had good luck with fish. I’m hoping I don’t have bad luck as well. I do love fish and have been wanting a tank for a while now.
My first experience with fish… I was 10 years old and taking care of the biology class fish for the easter break. We didn’t have fancy aquarium tanks back then in South Africa. We kept the 2 gold fish in a gallon sized mason jar and changed 100% water once a week. So I changed the water… I had the jar in the bathtub, poured it out into a mixing bowl, filled fresh tap water (no water conditioner), poured the fish back in from a cup, but missed the mouth of the jar. The fish slapped against the bathtub. I picked them up using my sister’s pajamas and put them back int he jar. They survived – with a “limp”…
My second attempt – I moved out of my parents house, and my sister in law gave me her 2 fish. They were in a gallon size round globe type bowl. She gave me these blue drops – put a few drops in the water a week. So I tried to get a few drops out… I squeezed and nothing happened. So I squeezed real hard… and the lid popped off and all the blue liquid emptied into the fish bowl. I changed all the water, but the fish were dead the next day…
Onto my third aquarium tank, in the United States, where I have better acces to information – SUCCESS 🙂
The bunnies and cockatiels are so funny. Guinevere appoached One of the tiels. He waddled away and crawled up the fence at high speed. This evening, I heard a huge clatter. Guin had run up her ramp to the 3rd level. The ramp is made of 3 NIC cubes, so it’s about 42 inches long. The ramp is accessible from a
Nic cube step, about 7 inches off the ground. So hop (noise) onto the step, then run up the ramp (more noise), then startle the sleeping cockatiels on the safety fence on top of the 3rd level. So the tiels flapped down to the ground coz those 2 can’t fly (waiting for their clipped wings to grow back). Lancelot saw them on the ground and hopped behind them to investigate. He is extremely bold. Not afraid of a thing. Not even the vacuum cleaner. Or the hammer, or the drill. So he doesnt’ just approach them gingerly like Guin does, he hops along. They freak out, his, spread their wings, hiss, and waddle away. The more they waddle away, the faster he hops to keep up and investigate. The more they freak out, and so on. Hilarious. So I stepped in, and put the poor alarmed cockatiels on a sleeping spot away from the rabbits.
Wow, New Years eve must be nobody comes to work day. The parking lot was so empty when I got here. o_O
Everyone is posting 2015 recaps on Facebook. It’s kinda depressing.
2015 has been a depressing year in many respects. War in Syria and Iraq, terrible war-crimes, refugees drowning in the Mediterranean, terrorist attacks in Paris.
I sincerely hope 2016 will be better.
Doesn’t every year have itps ups and downs? Happy new year folks 🙂
Happy New Year everybody!
Happy new year! This year was not my best year. One of my supposed “friends” completely betrayed me in so many respects, and Cinny passed over the Rainbow Bridge. I’m hoping 2016 will be looking up.
vanessa – True, but everything just seemed more depressing than usual. =\ Plus I can’t say 2015 was all exciting for me, personally, either. I mean, it could have been worse I suppose.
Stupid people with their fireworks. Wooly is showing signs of being upset. I gave them a new willow ring, but Leopold was being a little too enthusiastic. I pulled it apart so they could each have some without Leopold smacking Wooly in the face with it. *sigh*

LBJ I hope the fireworks don’t upset them too much. We have double fireworks here tonight but we are far from where they are being set off downtown.
Happy new year, all!
My buns didn’t seem upset by the fireworks. They are all happy and eating their breakfasts now. My dog is at my mum’s it’s safer for her there. Sometimes people like to throw firecrackers at dogs.
There was only one boom at around 12:13am, so my animals were fine. I was surprised though, guess it was too cold for people to want to shoot off fire works. lol
Got a picture of Speckles when she was licking her lips.
One of the most adorable moments turned horrifying by a picture…………….
