My family has found the low light flea traps are very good and safe around pets. But, these do have to be plugged up … so you will have to keep the bunnies away from the electrical cord and sticky paper.
How they work: These traps use a low voltage light ….(a small clear light bulb) … along with a sticky paper. … like the sticky mouse trap paper. You set these traps on the floor because the fleas are normally on the floor level. These traps work better in low light or in the dark as the small light attracts the fleas. The fleas jump at the light and fall below onto the sticky paper and they can not get off the paper and they die. There are models that have a grid plate that goes over the sticky paper to keep pets from getting stuck to the paper. My mother has several of these traps in her home. She has many cats and a flea problem now and then. The traps work very well. These traps are very safe around the cats. But, again, with buns … you will need to block them away from the elec. cord and the sticky paper.

You can also find these on Ebay. Do a search for “flea traps”. I believe they are hard to find in stores.
Another tip on these …. if you order and use them …… my mother found it better to go to Walmart and buy the mouse sticky paper to use as her replacement pads …. as the ones you buy for these traps are marked much higher in price and you often have to order them and pay shipping.
I will also mention, my brother uses these too and he owns several cats. He also states they work great.
Now let me tell you how I control fleas. I live in North Ga. It is very humid and hot here and we have a huge flea problem in this area. I have dogs in my home and now one house bun. I am having no flea problems this year ! (Knock on wood). I have learned over the years …. it is important to treat your yard and home and not so much the animal. And this is better for your
animals too.
This may not be possible if someone has a flea problem in the home now ….. you will have to treat your pet for now … but for the future … always work towards treating the area and not the pet when possible. I have been working in this direction over the past coouple of years and finding it is working for me this year ! I have found constant vacuuming works wonders. Vac much more during the hot season when fleas breed and move around. I also got rid of most of my carpet and went to tile and hardwoods. I do have area rugs and I vacuum the area rugs very often to suck up any fleas or eggs. If your area rugs are real old and dirty, it may be better to discard them. You will be surprised how rugs can hold and breed fleas. I did a great deal of research to rid fleas in the past …. and vacuuming often is one of the best ways to help pull up the fleas and eggs. But then don’t let your vac sit after vacuuming. If you have a bagless vacuum ….. dump the contents in a plastic bag and then spray flea spay in the bag and tie up tight and put in garbage. It is best to burn if you live somewhere you can burn the bag. If you can not burn the bag, then again, spray any kind of chemical in the bag like a bug spray if you do not happen to have a flea spray.
Tie up the bag very tight and throw away. Maybe double bag to be safe, so no fleas escape and get out and lay eggs again in your home.
My downstairs vacuum has a bag. I will spray some flea spray on one spot on the area rug and run the vacuum over it so the spray is sucked up into the bag… hoping it will kill the fleas and eggs in the bag. Or I will remove the bag and throw it away …. after putting it into a plastic bag and sealing it up. Someone above mentioned putting a flea collar in the bag ….. that is a great idea! They also make carpet powders for fleas … so if this is used on your carpet and sucked up in the vacuum bag …. I would think this would kill any fleas or eggs in the bag.
I have also “decluttered” my home of card board boxes and other things sitting around that fleas could hide in and breed. I have put items in plastic tubs. This also helps with spiders and other bugs. I had a storage room in my basement full of cardboard boxes and clutter. Mice got in and chewed into the boxes. I had lots of fleas in this room at one time. I feel the fleas were on the mice and hiding in the cardboard boxes. We emptied the room, put everything in tubs and put up shelves. Now we have no more mice and no more fleas in the storage areas either.
Fleas will get into crack and crevices of your floors …. so if you have lots of fleas …. it will help to move furiture, refridgertors, etc and clean well behind them. I know this is alot of work … but if you don’t bomb … this is what will prob. have to be done to rid the fleas.
To help with my constant vacuuming, I bought one of the Roomba Robotic Vacs. It goes under my bed and furniture for me!
You don’t have to buy the expensive ones …. they make a workshop model that is not too expensive and they work just as well. The Roomba Robotic vacs are the best money I have ever spent. My 84 yr old mother loves hers. She complained when I got her one … (ha ha) she said she was still able to vac and she did not want a gift that expensive … and further … she said she was not lazy and she would vacuum her house. I made her keep it and try it. She loved it so much, she bought herself another one to have two ….. as she has many cats and cat litter in her home.
Fleas will also get down into the cracks and crevices of your furniture. When I had a flea problem, I pulled off my cushions and I sprinkled 5% Seven Dust down into the crevices. I have also used All Natural Pet Sprays to spray my furniture.
Fleas breed quickly and are so aggravating…. and harmful to us and our pets. I hope I have been of some help. I am sorry this was so long, but it can be a difficult task when you can not bomb and use harmful products to get rid of fleas. If you have to bomb ….. I have found the Bengal Products work best and seem to be slightly safer. Many feed stores and hardware stores sell Bengal products.
