Dead To The World?

Okay, Mimzy just scared the living snot out of me!

I can remember once before when he looked like he was sleeping and I couldn’t tell if he was breathing or not and I squeaked out his name and he suddenly leapt up and looked at me like, “What the heck are you sneaking up on me for, are you trying to give me a coronary??”

I just went into the bunny room and I saw he was in meatloaf position against the near pen wall. Now normally when I come in and he’s snoozing, he gets right up and retreats to the back wall. But I called him. Twice. Three times. Nothing. I opened his pen door with a snap that sounds like a rifle shot. Nothing. At this point, I am almost scared to put my hand in. But I reached over and touched him. Still nothing. His eyes are totally closed. He is warm to the touch, so there’s a good sign. I call him and ruffle his fur. Nothing. I start rubbing my hand over his face and rub his ears. Still nothing. I am frantcially calling him now and about ready to yank him out of there and bring him out for an exam. Then his eyes open a little bit. So I keep petting him and talking to him and then I got a bright idea to open the treat bag. That’s when my bun comes back to me and he’s up and looking aroud the front of the pen and sniffing and climbing the walls looking for “boo-berries.”

Does anyone happen to know how deeply a bunny will sleep? I would think they would always be on guard? Why does MImzy go so far down like this? Could he have some kind of circulatory problem? Do I have to worry that someday I’ll come up to him and he’ll be comatose? This scares me and I want to be sure it is normal for a bunny to be “dead to the world.”

mine sometimes sleep like that. the treats can usually snap them out of it… the few times they can’t i always keep a closer eye on them.

Bindi sleeps deep like that and has scared me on several occasions too. He will lay all flopped out, with his eyes closed and his little mouth sort of open. I freak out every time, he just looks too peaceful when he does that and I watch him to make sure he’s breathing okay and then I relax. He doesn’t sleep like that for very long periods of time though. I notice he’ll do that sometimes in the afternoon when the sun is warm on his cage. He’s hard to wake up too! I assume he can’t hear as good as my other buns because of his big floppy ears. Sometimes I go in with treats and the other buns go nuts, he keeps sleeping until I put the treat right in front of him and sort of blow the scent towards him. It’s hilarious to see him wake up! He’s like “WHERE”S THE TREAT!!!” looking around all frantic! It’s too cute.

My other two don’t ever sleep deep like that. I’ve never caught Stormy’s eyes closed in 4 years and he rarely lounges out. I guess since he feels everything in the house belongs to him he had better stay on guard for any burglars who might need a good scratch and thump!

Sometimes I go in with treats and the other buns go nuts, he keeps sleeping until I put the treat right in front of him and sort of blow the scent towards him. It’s hilarious to see him wake up! He’s like “WHERE”S THE TREAT!!!” looking around all frantic! It’s too cute.

this made me think of the old looney toon cartoons, where someone would have a big plate of food and the smell wafts towards the sleeping person and they float up in the air and follow the scent, still half asleep…

I was just going to post a similar blog, I wonder how much do your buns sleep? TigerLily used to be wild and crazy most of the time jumping and playing with everything in her cage. Over the past few days she is more relaxed and calm not so jittery and she SLEEPS a lot! I never noticed her sleep so much before, she is eating and popping normally. So i wonder if this is because she is getting older she is about 4 months old now. She still does play and I let her out when i get home from work and she is loose until bed time and she runs and jumps and binkys!

Just wanted to know how much everyone elses buns sleep.

My rabbits spend pretty much all afternoon sleeping/resting. They are usually pretty active during the morning and evening. As far as I know they sleep during the dark hours of the night as well (at least I rarely hear them making noise when I am in the bedroom). This is pretty normal bunny sleeping habits. It’s their instincts to be awake at dusk/dawn as in the wild this is when it’s the best time to leave the burrow for food with little risk of predators. My bunnies pretty much follow this pattern.

I also wanted to add sometimes a change in temperature can alter the bunnies activeness and habits for a bit. I know where I am, it’s starting to get much colder, although your in CA I doubt you have as much of a change as here in New Brunswick.

Yes I had thought that in the Fall and Winter we leave our windows open because it gets very cold here where we live. Highs of 60s and Lows of 40s – 50s at night. So we have been leaving the windows open.

Little Puffy Tail that happens with Honey Bun too.  HE sleeps very soundly.  When I roll a treat in front of him he is instantly awake sniffing looking for his treat.

Also I have a noisy baby gate at the bathroom door.  When I go in the bathroom HB doesn’t stir thru that racket. He sleep really sound. AFter I am in the bathroom a bit doing whatever make up etc. he will get up and put his head on my foot for pets. Just sittin there and he won’t move for a bit from his pet me PLEASE position even when I leave the bathroom I spy on him.

I hadn’t thought of the temperature, LPT, although it was overly warm in the house last night and my window hasn’t been open as much. But we’ve been forecast for snow for a few days now and you can feel it in the air. I wound up having to push my window wide about 4 in the morning because it was like a sauna in here! 0_o (As the hubby gets older, he doesn’t tolerate the cold as well, and with his back, well, it can get excruciating.)
I suppose the excess heat could’ve sent him down so deep. He has the same habits as pretty much every other bun, awake early, snoozing most of the day and then awake in the evening and sometimes up in the middle of the night. He does a lot of his eating over night. But this sleep seemed unnaturally deep even so.

I am just so afraid I’ll come in and find him…gone. I mean, nothing’s more peaceful than going in your sleep I guess, but since bunnies can go quickly and for no apparent reason, (hiding illness for a long time) or a loud noise (of which we have a few) can startle them to death…even though he’s not quite two years old, I fear that possibility.

Good to know some of you have a few Rip Bun Winkles out there! ^_^

Chuck does, but umn, I would too if I were him! He wakes for movement though. Little sweety looks so darn comfy sleeping.

Kahlua and Rupert sleep very light. Rupert was actually flopped out the other night, trying to groom his ears without having to get up-little lazy bum!

Naw, wait a minute…I KNOW he can hear a treat bag opening across a room, so strike that. Oh well, I suppose he just likes me to worry about him, little scamp! >.<
