Hello All~
This Friday we are going to be driving down to TN to pick up my Step-daughter (about 3 1/2 hours 1 way) Then Sunday after Church we take her back, so basically on Sunday we will be gone Most of the day… my concern is that Oreo won’t get his normal attention and out time… This will be the first time we will be doing this trip since we have had him, we do this about once a month. My plans are on Friday to let him stay out of his cage until time to go, which will be around 3pm. On Sunday he will have morning “out time” which will be about 1.5 hour(s). But that will be it, we will home after church but only long enough to eat, and change cloths, then we won’t be home til around 9:30-10:00pm.
So I guess my question would be do you all do anything specially if you know your going to be gone for prolonged periods of time, but not enough time to need a bunny sitter? Thanks for any and all advice!!! ![]()
I can’t tell from your pic but does he have a dog crate as a cage or an xpen? If he has space to move around, I don’t think the occasional day with limited exercise is going to make a difference. He may be annoyed about the limited time out, but he’ll get over it… ;o) If he has a smaller area for a cage, you might want to attach an xpen or a fence so he can still get out and stretch his legs within a safe area.
It’s harder if you have a set routine for them-(any animal) where they get out and attention for a specific amount of time, at a specific time. But like Beka said-your bun may be displeased with you (you may even get the ‘bunny butt’ or some late ‘stomping’ to let you know how terrible you are
) but he’ll get over it
It’s only a short period of time-I wouldn’t be too concerned!
He has a dog crate,(Made for a Great Dane) and I have bought some NIC cubes and attached them to his pen so he can stretch his legs whenever he wants, its not a HUGE area, but its pretty good sized. I just hate disrupting his, and all my animals routines, it bothers me no matter what I do, I also hate not being here to check the food, water, litter..etc, etc. but I bought an extra water bottle for him, and an extra food bowl for him, so I think he should be ok. other than being angry at me. Well, I guess I deserve it!!
Oh yeah, he should be fine… ;o)
We do long day trips every few weeks and with 4 buns they do fine. Your bun will probably sleep all day anyways so he may not even know your gone! lol Ok, im sure he will notice but it will be a perfect time to sleep…
We dont do anything different. Just make sure he has plenty of stretching room in his pen/cage area, plenty of water, morning food, fresh litter box and some toys and go on your way. They only thing we ever have to deal w/ is dinner being late when we get home which ends up getting us thumped at but we get forgiven fairly quickly.
What times do you normally feed him pellets and greens?
He usually gets his pellets in the bottom of his bowl in the morning (he’s around 8 lbs, so he gets 1/2 cup) he gets his morning greens as well, and then, since he’s a gobbler, he gets the other half (1 cup each time) in the evening, normally around 4:30-5pm Which we will be gone at that time, I was thinking since we won’t leave til probably 3pm I would do mornings as usual, then add extra hay, ad give him his evening feed before we leave. I know he will have plenty of room, and plenty of water and hay…I guess I’m more concerned about his feedings being messed up, and him not having his “out time” he really likes his time out of the cage with me. Part of me wants to send my husband and daughter to get her, so I can stay home with the Rabbit, but I have to go incase Michael wants to rest and I drive back. ![]()
I agree, feeding the dinner a little early and then topping off his hay should be fine to get him thru when you’re gone…
My son plays hockey and some of his away games can take up a good chunk of the day – when this happens, we have a group of seperate toys we give the buns. Ones that they only get for this reason and can entertain them for longer periods, like tubes, bags, or small boxes that are filled with orchard grass (a treat for them) and a hidden raisin or two. We find that they don’t even seem to notice we’ve been gone!!! We also leave the TV on for them!!!!!!!!
Can you give him extra time out the day before and the day after maybe? Trust me, you cant put your life on hold for the little guy. He will survive-I promise! He is safe, fed, loved, and has a perfect place to sleep.
One day without his time out to run and play will be fine for him. If you are truely worried you could try and make his xpen larger but thats about it. When Im really sick or we leave for the day my 4 buns are stuck in their cages for the entire day and they dont get worked up over it. They get out the next day and seem fine.
Thanks everyone! Tomorrow will be the trip down, he got extra out time this evening 4 whole hours.. even though he napped for an hour of that! LOL I’m sure I’m worrying over nothing, but I just remember the first time he didn’t get his evening play time, and boy, oh boy was I sorry come the next morning! He made a HUGE mess over night!!!
I will let everyone know how it goes! Thanks again, you are a GREAT bunch of people, so supportive!!!! ![]()
Hey everyone~
Oreo did good Friday night, other than being extremely angry with me, and turning his rear towards me when I got home and was checking on him and wanting to pet him before I went off to bed. I’m sure it will be the same for me tomorrow, if not worse when I’m gone pretty much all day! I do suppose I deserve it! =)
I’m glad to hear he did well. I get the rear from my bunnies alllll the time – I usually do something at least once a day that displeases someone ![]()
