So, I got a call from my mom back home (I am currently at school) and she told me that my bunny has started getting dark spots around his tail and above his eyes. I had her check the skin underneath but nothing seemed wrong. the spots by his tail are just above it to the right and left. I don’t know if the black markings on him are expanding since he is a Californian or if this is something that I should be worried about. same goes for the ones above his eyebrows. apparently, it is starting to look like he has eyebrows. he is a year old. Thank you for your time. All responses are appreciated.

Do you mean new dark patches of fur are growing?

I think that’s totally normal – bunnies markings change as they moult.

I have a vienna marked black lop – I originally chose him because he had a white lightning stripe on his forehead. That has now completely disappeared, but he now has a white eyebrow, a white ear tip, and various little white tufts all over him.

Californians gets darker markings in winter. It’s because they have a color gene that’s sensitive to cold. It’s very, very cool =)

Here’s a little bit about the Himalayan gene (Himalayan rabbits are the ancestors of Californians and are responsible for their distinctive color pattern):
“The markings change with age and environment. The colder weather may darken markings, enlarge markings, and also add markings around the eyes and genitals (vent smut).” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Himalayan_rabbit

              So, perfectly normal (and awesome).

Thank you so much. I did not know that and was starting to worry. I must admit it is pretty cool that he can change colors
