Hi I know there have been a lot of topics about bunny poop but I just want to make sure that if my bunny started having darker little moist poop when I changed his hay, if it’s okay.

He is a young 4 months old bunny so I give him alfalfa pellets with higher protein.

I’m pretty sure it changed due to hay because he started getting these darker poops just after I gave him another hay. Everything is alright with my bun, he is happy and healthy and poops just normal size.

Can I keep giving him this hay if he likes it too much?

Yes, you can give him this hay. Darker poop isnt a problem if they’re nicely shaped, of a good size and ample. When you change hays, you can get darker or lighter poop. As long as you see that he is eating the hay, it’s fine. Hay isnt uniform, the nutritional content can vary quite a bit with the time it was harvested and the conditions where the hay grew.

The poop may become less dark with time, because the gut adjusts to new food for optimal nutritional uptake.

Alfalfa pellets are good for young, growing buns.

            Ahh thank you very much!

Is there any problem if they are sometimes different size. In the evening it’s usually a mix of some smaller ones, some very small and harder, some completely normal

It’s not really a problem, especially since he is so young. The tummy works at different rates during the day. Its quicker in the evenings and mornings when the bun is at its most active.

What you dont want to see is some type of continuous shrinking of the poop size and amount, because that means sth isn’t right – either the bun isn’t eating or drinking enough, or there could be some sort of gut slowdown or a combo of both.

With young rabbits you may see uneaten cecotrophes too, which is not considered a problem.

They really aren’t that much different in size. It’s not like they’re coming out of a press. 🙂  They look perfectly fine to me and, as Bam said, dark poops are not really something that needs to be worried about.

Yeah I mean the picture I attached is completely good, but I mean other poops in the evening are really different sizes 🤭

Thank you very much! I’m a lot relaxed now ❤️

My bunnies have gone from darker to lighter poo with different hay as well, even just with different quality of Timothy hay. It should be fine! Another thing you can check that is poo obsessed bunny people get to do is give it some time to dry then smoosh it. Does it crumble up like it’s supposed to? If it does then you’re all good!
