So we just noticed in the last three days that our rabbit had these black spots near his eyes and on his face. His bonded female loves to groom him so we don’t know of that has any impact. The wetness in the photo is an anti fungal cream we put on him. Could anyone tell me/have any idea what this is? Thanks.

Does it look like black fur growing in? Black fur versus black skin are very different stories!
Is this only happening where you’re putting antifungal cream? (wondering if it’s a reaction to the cream you’re using – what are you using?)

It is really hard to tell. He is a chocolate brown and doesnt have black hair. We put on the cream after we noticed these spots.

Dark hair can look black when it’s just starting to grow back (fuzz).

Ok, we were just worried about random patch hair loss.

If you pop a piece of white paper under a section of fur elsewhere, check out what colour the tip of the fur is. Its often not obvious until you give some contrast like that. Whe dark fur or dark-tipped fur is growing in, it can appear like a shadow on the skin, then darkens to black, then after a day or two, can look like velvet.

He could be going through a big moult. Have you seen him have one of those before?

If it’s the spots his bond mate grooms a lot, it may be that she is over doing it. This is aptly named “barbering”. It can get to the point where a bond mate grooms a spot bald and keeps at it, so the skin becomes quite inflammed. Something to watch for if she is really persistent.
