We have them growing in our yard and our yard is not treated. I gave my buns one each and they liked them. My question is how many am I allowed to give them?  Are they like a unlimited green or give them as treats??

Hi! I would only offer them with their regular veggies and measured as a part of their normal diet and not as a “treat.” Dendelion leaves are highly nutritous for your rabbit and I see that they are not treated which is good. Be sure to make certain that they are rinsed well as some parasites can take out camp on the leaves and possibly infect your rabbit.

I buy dandelions from Meijer with my weekly greens. All my buns really love them. But they are HUGE (usually over 12″ long) compared to what grows in the yard. In the summer sometimes I will go out and cut some and even give buns the flower parts of the dandelions because we have no outside pets and our yard isn’t treated, but the dandelions are less than half the size of what I can buy at the grocery. So really it almost isn’t worth the hassle of getting them outside.

            Maybe I’m just lazy…lol..

I’ve never found dandelions in stores-but in the summer I get to take them from Dave’s moms yard (it’s not sodded yet so it’s just dandelions!) so I get some occaisionally. They love them and I really wish I could have them more often!

                Kokaneeandkahlua,

I recommend getting Eule Gibbons, Stalking the Wild Asparagus. In the dandelion chapter he gives instructions for growing them year round. If I come across it I’ll post instructions using modern materials.

In the summer time I do give my rabbits dandelions frequently, as well as clover and fresh grasses plenty. I cut back on pellets during that time. I am planning to dry some, too, this summer to last a little bit into the winter (very long winters where I live). On the amount to give I find that with any fresh greens you have to be careful not to let your rabbit overindulge, mine will chomp down every green thing I put down. For some reason, once dried they agree with one of my rabbits more, he gets diarrhea easily but never from the dried stuff.
