dandelions

when i took chacha in for her spay, the vet recommended that i feed her some dandelions.

are dandelions good for buns? my yard doesn’t have any.. ><

dandelions are very tasty to bunnies. They love them! Just make sure if you get any that they have not been sprayed with anything.

My bunnies love them too! Which is good, my yard is full of them. My buns are still young so they don’t get too many. They are a treat. I have the same question…how many can they have? Can they have them everyday?

My local grocery store sells Dandelion greens.  I live in a subdivision- so there are only certain parts of my yard that I feel is safe from water run off or wind transfer of insecticides or other treatements.  Better safe than sorry.

But if you know someone that lives in the country and does not treat- you could get dandelions, clover, etc.

lol my Mother in Law lives on 7 acres also! She doesn’t treat her lawn and she has a ton of them! Se is only 8 miles from me so I could go there and get them. Do you feed them to your bunnies? How much can they have?

I treat them just like any other veg. I give my bunny three types of greens per day. I just substitute the dandelions in with the other veg. (Usually parsley, cilantro, mint, basil, or lettuce.) However, I don’t feed it all the time, it’s more of a treat. I remember hearing somewhere that dandelion is a diuretic? Maybe someone else can weigh in on the truth of that statement?

Wow, your bunny is lucky! I only feed my bunny pellets and unlimited hay and sometimes a dandelion and piece of carrot. He gets a piece of carrot everyday. My female only gets pellets and unlim hay. Then again…my male is almost 4 months old and my female is around 2 months. I am introducing right now. Eventually they will get lots of veggies per day!

What type of lettuce do you give your bunny? I’ve heard Iceburg is not good for them.

Definitely no iceburg. I give mine romaine, greenleaf, and occasionally redleaf lettuce.

 I buy those Spring Mix lettuce salad mixes (because I eat it myself too!)… There’s no iceburg in there though. Baby bunnies are especially prone to digestive upset because of greens being introduced too early.

I do a lot of research. lol I guess I am an information junkie. I just don’t want to make any mistakes that could really hurt my bunnies. I didn’t at all realize that there are so many things they can’t have. I’ve always thought that rabbits eat grass and veggies. I’m glad I found out otherwise. Baxter is doing great with the smaller carrots I give him. I’ve heard they are higher in calories for bunnies so I am going to try some other things. I think I will buy some cilantro today and introduce that.

Nibbles, have you tried wheat grass? I think it is just regular grass but I’m not sure. I buy a wheat grass plant from the organic veggie section at my local grocer. ChaCha could eat the ENTIRE THING in one sitting if I didn’t take it away, lol.

I just spoke to my dad about the dandelions and he said he killed the ones outside the house >__________<

Some fun info about Dandelions. I grow them in my garden with Italian parsley for my bunnies. I remember my grandmother telling me the milky juice of the plant helps with healing cuts and scrapes.

No I haven’t. I will have to try that. In the Big city we live by there are a couple of stores have only organic foods and things. I’m going to go there next week. I bet I could find some things my bunnies would like. Thanks for the info!

I’m so glad you just said that! I bought some cilantro today and wanted to buy italian parsley but didn’t know if it was okay. Next time I will try that!
