        Hello!

Little Miu had liver lobe torsion and had to have surgery.  She is recovering like a champ. After Dorian’s surgery where they mistakenly thought he might have it and his slower recovery I was really relieved.  Though I swear these buns need to chill with the medical emergencies!

Anyway my question is about the length of time for her to take antibiotics.  They put down 3 weeks.  It seemed long so I checked Dorian’s meds and his were only 2 weeks. I am not sure if maybe they made a mistake? I do plan on calling,  but if anyone has idea of normal length that would help.

She is not a bun who likes to be handled so twice a day for another full week is daunting, it’s very stressful for both if us. She had her post operation check up and her numbers were good.

I’m sorry Miu had to go through that. Poor thing. Are the antibiotics just as a preventative? Or are they for an actual infection? Antibiotic course lengths can vary by type of antibiotic, and what they are being used for.

@lBJ10 – I think she had a mild infection (excess bacteria) based on the blood panel prior to surgery.  I did call vet but receptionist basically told me their vets do not make mistakes, which is not realistic. She really did not want to put me through to an actual vet or even vet assistant. I know from experience that they do. It’s an emergency clinic, there’s a lot going on. I don’t hold it against anyone for a minor typo on the length. I know finishing antibiotics is important to reduce antibiotic resistance, but there’s also her stress level and gut health to be considered. I wish my vet wasn’t on a health related sabbatical.

If there was an actual infection, then I don’t think a 3 week course is going to hurt anything. Of course, I am used to dealing with stubborn URIs and, yes, sometimes the antibiotics had to continue for weeks just to make sure the infection was resolved. GI flora is always a concern. But if the antibiotic isn’t causing any upset now, then another week likely won’t either. Maybe try the vet on Monday? It is the weekend after all.

It’s an emergency clinic, vets in 24/7. She did text me back and I am continuing the dose.  Receptionist was just being difficult,  I’m sure it’s part of their job to screen out as many questions as possible!

I think for me the issue is Miu does not like being handled so if there was any chance of stopping early it be less stressful for her. Dorian I can pick up and he doesn’t really care so is much easier. I have had to hold her for vets before as she fights way above her weight class, her chart comes with a warning. She gets absolutely traumatized by it too, starts shaking and hides for hours. I can get lucky and just dose her quickly on the ground sometimes, but not always lucky and actually have to catch and hold her. That said I just have 5 days left.

Our bun Arthas is also quite dramatic about being handled or getting medicine. It really stresses him out, too. He is usually huffy for a couple days, even after something like toe trims.

When he was neutered, I had to give him meds for a few days. He started to get afraid (or just really cranky) when I would even come in the room. When his course was done and he was healing, it took a few weeks before he would really talk to me.

To prove my innocence (and lack of meds to force on him), I would just go in and talk to him for a minute or sit on the floor with him, and bring him a treat. This seemed to help and eventually he didn’t hate me quite as much lol.

I think the key to earning Miu’s trust again will  just be repetition – you’re here with good stuff, not icky stuff.

                  Hang in there! :)<!–/data/user/0/com.samsung.android.app.notes/files/clipdata/clipdata_bodytext_250820_104428_956.sdocx–>

To be fair, antibiotics can sometimes taste really yucky… even when they are flavored. Have you tried sitting on her? That technique always worked for me. I would sit on my knees and bunny would go in the space between my legs and the floor. I would make sure to turn my feet inward so they couldn’t back up. Then it was just a matter of getting the syringe into the mouth.

I’ve done the sit one. Though found it was easiest if she was in hay and just hold her down for long enough to give her the syringe.  I also ended up combining all the meds in one syringe as it made it faster. It’s finally done! Now will just need to regain trust. Right now she’ll run and hides if I get close.

Yay! I’m glad you’re done. She will forgive you eventually. Once she realizes you’re only there for good things, she’ll come around.

Thanks LBJ10. Figure it may take a bit, but you’re right we will get back there! She’s not a people bun like Dorian, but she had decided I was part of the gang. I am hoping she let’s me back in to the cool rabbit club soon!
