Just something I’ve been wondering. Do bunnies sleep with their eyes open? I have not ever, in over a year, observed Alliya  laying down with her eyes closed. I assume they either don’t close their eyes or she is just so hyper alert that she wakes up the minute I come into the room. Or it could be that my wacky night time schedule means she doesn’t sleep at night either.

Yep. I’ve read that they can sleep with their eyes open. Ever vigilent for intruders.

Yes. Edson sleeps during the day and his eyes are completely shut. He seems to be up all night. Others say their rabbits sleep at night!

I’ve had my Ella for three years and never seen her with her eyes closed. I wondered about this as well and found out that yes indeed, rabbits can sleep with their eyes open.

buns are typically crepuscular… (active at dawn and dusk) but they can take on their owners habits as well.  so if you’re really active at night, the bun may pick up on this and adapt to your schedule… sometimes but not always.  they do sleep with their eyes open often.  my guess is this is due to their prey status in the wild.  they must always be semi-alert.  they will get into a deeper sleep where their eyes will close, sometimes halfway or all the way.  my Mead tends to only really close her eyes when she’s flopped.  that’s a relaxed bun!

                  AHA! Found it.
If you go to the green banner above and mouse over GALLERIES, click Photos. You’ll see some folders with pictures. Select Flops & Lounges.
The first picture (it’s the white one showing) is BinyBunny’s rabbit (Jack, right) in a sound sleep. Eyes closed shut. Everything but zzzzzzzzzz above his head. That’s one sleeping bunny!!! Very cute.

Pepper naps either loafed or stretched out with her eyes open – the only way I can tell she is asleep is that her nose isn’t twitching!

Bunnies are naturaly curious, which means that they can’t close their eyes sometimes. I often observe this when I sleep with my bunny, I will wake up in the middle of the night and check up on him (as quiet as a mime). I will see him with his eyes open and not moving a muscle. Most of the time he’ll sleep with his eyes closed but I have to see to beleive.

                                crepuscular

I learn a new bunny term every week!

That’s a good tip about the nose stopping it’s twitching too.

I love that one of Rupert.

Markusdark, that pix should have a caption like “what happens to bunnies who eat Big Macs.”
