ok well i have 7 rabbits 3 females and 4 males. i am going to take them all inside and would like to keep the majority of them together so i dont have to have so many cages (hopefully). how big of a habbitat should i build for them? can anyone give me an example of how to build out such a cage. they will of course be let out into an exnclosed room and hardly ever confined ( except night and ferret play time). i would like to try and build one out of those cube shelving things i have seen pictures of. if the rabbit sizes matter here, 3 rabbits are larger and 4 smaller ones. well actually i may not be able to fix my one male because he is almost 10 so leave him out of the equation i suppose. please help
WOW that’s a lot of buns! LOL
They must all be spayed/neutered if your going to keep them together? And do they all live together now? If not, you’ll want to start with spay/neuter (or you’ll have a hundred by spring!) and then bonding-takes a while to bond bt we can help you!
Say you were going to keep four and three, I’d say two large condos-Maybe six-eight cubes deap, two width and four to five high? Times two! But probably if they aren’t all bonded, then I’d say you could do two pairs and one trio, and then no one would be lonely-but you’d have to do three smaller condos ![]()
it’s wonderful that your’e bringing them inside! KUDOS for YOU! they will be so much safer indoors and happier, esp if they can be bonded together. like K&K said, absolutely: spay/neuter is your first step. i read your other thread, so i know that this is on the horizon (DOUBLE KUDOS!) even with your ten y.o…. it may be possible to bond him to a spay/neutered bun, even if he is not, just due to his advanced age.
can you tell us about teh buns now? are any of them bonded together? how are they housed? are all 7 individually housed or are some in pairs? this is going to be quite an undertaking. you might have to house them inside as they are now, until you can alter and then begin to bond. what you can do is actually build smaller temporary condos (even if they’re only 3×2 cubes for each bun) until the bonding is underway and you have a better idea of how they will be grouped.
I would suggest coroplast for the bottoms of the cages. I did have connectable mats, but my lop figured out how to chew on them.
Use this site to help find grids and coroplast in your location: http://guineapigcages.com/where.htm
Here are some examples of cage setups:

well all the males had their own cages, but i had a huge pen in the back yard in which all the females lived. all of the females get along surprisingly and i believe once the males are neutered they will too because they are sweet hearts. except for bun~bun he is not bunny friendly or any animal friendly really so i think i shall build him his own little castle. they all live right next to each other where they can see and partially contact each other so i think they have all bonded in some form to the others existance. anywho i should probly explain some more about my buns.well i have 2 dwarfs a female and a male (Arwen and Edward), a dwarf dutch cross female (china),a lyonhead male (pouffer), a large mixed female (food)lol long story, one male dutch (bun~bun), and one male dutch/dwarf/lyonhead/jersey wooly cross (fluffy).since the majority of them are rescues i dont know the ages of some and guesstimate some of the others. i will have pictures up soon.Arwen is probly about 4-5, edward is unknown because i litterally picked him up off the streets about 6 months ago, china is about 3, pouffer is about 3-4, food is only about a year i rescued her from being snake food when she was little, bun~bun i bought when he was very young and so was i, fluffy is only about a year old he came from my friends house as a baby she gave him to me after one of my females (Galadrial) died of cancer and no she wasnt fixed. thats why i am doing this now to prevent another problem with them. thats pouffer in the pic.
well have bought like 5 of those cube unite things and i am going to make a huge uber rabbit cage for my buns.
Awe that’s sweet! What an adorable picture! You must post pictures of your new condo set-up. You’ll want to be careful when you place the rabbits together as a lot of times there will be fighting and having them all together, even though they are siblings, doesn’t mean that they will all get along so please be extra careful. Which I am sure you will be.
You’ll also need to wait to put the boys with the girls after altering because they can still impregnate the females up to 6 weeks after surgery.
Have you looked at the Cool Habitats gallery? Here is the link if that click link doesn’t work: https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/CoolHabitats/tabid/71/Default.aspx
There are lots of great ideas in there. I think for that many bunnies you would probably want a combination of NIC cube condos, surrounded by an ex-pen so they would all have plenty of space.
really i wouldnt think so but thats really weird….and kinda kool (super bunny?)lol. actually i figured out that two of the boys alredy get along with out surgery so them bonding shouldnt be a problem. that male in the picture (pouffer) he is the only one who i will have to wait for to get along with the others. and one of our females as well she has an issue with attitude but other then that most of the others should have almost no problems. they will have plenty of space the cage i am building for the big group is massive almost 7ft tall not very wide due to the shelving but fairly long and goes around a corner. what should i use to put on the shelves so the bunny feet dont fall through? something easy to clean because i will be cleaning the cage everyday most likely.
Coroplast works well (it’s basically corrugated plastic) and if you know someone who is a realtor and has a ton of signs left over – they make them out of it, you can also cut a roll of linoleum, or use peel & stick tiles on some pressboard.
A usual rule of thumb that works is that you should have one square foot per pound of bun. So, if you’re going to have 4 buns together and each weigh 4 pound, that’s 16 square feet. Larger of course is better and multi-levels can give them some alone time if needed.
If you know a local rescue shelter (even a cat shelter), you may want to check with them and see if you can get any habitats on the cheap.
In addition, I just found this website that gives you a step by step instruction to building your own habitat:
http://breyfamily.net/bunnycage.html
I love the first picture where they show you all the supplies and someone is holding the rabbit in frame as if the rabbit is saying, “I don’t want to be part of this!”
i have actually decided to to slit the group in half and build two large condos and one smaller condo for bun~bun. i am unsure right now of the dimensions and such (have to move the house around first) but when i know everyone on here will know so we can make sure its right for the amount of bunnies in it.
