Cruelty-free brands

So a few months ago I started buying cruelty free stuff to replace my old. I’m like halfway through replacing (I can’t afford to throw out stuff un-used so I buy cruelty free when I go to get more of something we’re out of). Well I started with shampoos, then cosmetics, but after researching my perfume (which I figured I’d have to part with anyways) I found out stuff like batteries aren’t cruelty free. So where does one go to get cruelty-free batteries? Only a few of the chain stores around me have sections for this kind of stuff and I’ve never seen batteries there.

 

I’d also though it would be fun to share our favorite cruelty-free brands so people starting out or looking for something in particular could have personal recommendations. 

I’ll start:
I love the “YestoCarrots” brand (recommended by chacha). They sell shampoo, conditioner, and skin care.
I also love my professional line (hard to be a cosmetologist while doing this) but Paul Mitchell is like THE only pro (hair) line that is cruelty free.
BUT OPI for nails is cruelty free along with Sally Hansen and Essie.
And I’ve tried both Burt’s Bees and Tom’s of Maine toothpaste and I definitely prefer Tom’s (burt’s kinda melted- plus they are owned by non-cruelty free sister company.
I’ve also bought dishsoap and laundry detergent but I don’t remember the name since I bought them in a store and just looked for leaping bunny logo.

 EDIT: I’ve now seen that Sally Hansen is on the cruel list again
I wish companies would pick a side and stick there.

I use toms of maine toothpaste, I just recently bought Kirks Castile soap and I kinda like it. Finding a good deodorant that is cruelty free is proving a hassle around here, I tried Toms, but it doesn’t seem to work past like.. an hour tops. :s And i’m still experimenting with shampoos, I think i’ll see if I can find Yesto online somewhere.

I forgot, I know Urban Decay is cruelty free for makeup and hard candy (walmart brand). I’ve also been buying home-made eyeshadow off Etsy and TH that are really cool pigments and obviously cruelty free.

I really want to find a good mouthwash for my bf. All these changes are upsetting him but when I tell him he can go buy from the companies that test on animals and get his own stuff- funny enough he doesn’t.

cruelty free means the product and brand does not test on animals at all. Now some brands are cruelty free but owned by another company that isn’t so it’s still profiting the bad companies. It’s not a choice for everyone but one of my dreams would be for it to be illegal to test on animals at all. India has done it, so can we

Aww. I’m glad your boyfriend is supporting you in this, even if he complains a bit! My boyfriend won’t even TRY other products or help me find ones he would be OK trying to help me turn our house cruelty free. So it’s just my products going that way…

Tom’s of Maine was bought by a company that uses animal testing, so I don’t even touch that brand even though they say that Tom’s is still animal testing free.

I have recently tried ‘Jason’ brand by recommendation from a few of my customers. It is amazing I have the lotion and it does not feel gross or slimy after application!

The next thing that I need to buy is cruelty free shave cream. I am using the rest of what I have up and will take the plunge on the shave cream

When I move out, I will be switching to cruelty free clothes detergent. I’m kind of a broke student on a budget at the moment -_-

There is a Lush store in Seattle and I will be going to Seattle tomorrow. I’m thinking of finding directions and stopping by to get some bath bombs! WOOT! Hurray for Cruelty Free

 

Seeing so many things that go on in the beauty and food industry make me so sad, so I have made the decision to change my eating habits (I’m slowly eliminating all dairy from my diet and cheese is next after I do some research, and eventually eliminating all meat except for fish) and the beauty products that I buy. No animal should suffer because of what I need

I remember another thread on this awhile back. You might try searching for it because there were some great suggestions.

I like Jason too. They make some really nice products. I did try the Kirks castile soap. It doesn’t smell the greatest, but my husband likes it so we have been using it.

Look for the leaping bunny logo, there are a lot more products available now. I find that health food stores carry a wider selection. At least where I live anyway.

Yeah chacha and I looked for their cruelty free section because the one by my mom’s has one and they didn’t have one. I was so disappointed. But Target carries some stuff so that’s good.

I personally think beauty stuff is the easiest to find and weird things like batteries, deodorant, and stuff like that is the hardest.

I’m disappointed by Tom’s. Now off to find another brand! :/ So any new recommendations? I need to find that old forum. I thought someone mentioned some place where you could buy bulk cruelty free stuff and save money.

I am lucky though. My mom’s been helping me switch stuff and my mom and boyfriend only call me crazy half the time when I’m shopping cruelty free

I can’t take dairy out of my diet unless I make ALL my food myself here, there are no dairy alternatives in the stores! No soy cheeses, no dairy free ice cream, not even vegan yogurt. *frown* No tempeh or anything either. Argh. So, I just try to do light dairy and don’t eat any meat (not even fish). I don’t have time to make my own dairy free cheeses and such. :s

LBJ : I actually like the way the Kirks soap smells, I dislike perfumey scents though.

Chacha: Have you looked into using a cruelty free shea butter based soap instead of shaving cream? I like that better than the shaving creams/gels since it is a LIGHT lather and then leaves my skin super smooth after, since shea butter is so good at moisturizing. Keeps razor burn away really well too. Some of the shea based soaps can be pricey though.

Going Cruelty-Free is the only way if you love bunnies!!!

Some of my fave brands are : KissMyFace (“Early to Bed” Shower Gel is amazing!!!! Great for a bubble bath when you are stressed out!), I also use their toothpaste, LiveClean, Nature`s Gate and for make-up I love Urban Decay. It`s expensive compared to what I used to use, Avon, but they started testing on animals so I gave them the boot.

Not sure about batteries. You could ask on the `LeapingBunny` Facebook page. People there are great at answering questions.

oh good idea LPT. I didn’t know KissMyFace made toothpaste! I’m going to have to check that out. Target carries them so I might not have order online. Also one of the bare essentials/minerals is cruelty free. I forget which one since I heard in hearsay (also means I’m not 100% on that) but I thought I would throw that out there.

Some milk is less cruel than others. There is a local dairy where I live that doesn’t use hormones and the cows have access to a pasture. I took a tour there and the conditions were better than those factory farms. Same with eggs. If the chickens are cared for and can run around, it is better than factory farmed eggs.

I go to leapingbunny.org. They are the best source of information on this stuff IMO. Peta has good stuff too but Peta can be pretty radical at times. And Leapingbunny has companies that are cruelty free put their logo on the product (usually the back). Which makes it easier to identify while shopping.

Yep, leaping bunny is the way to go. You will find some companies that say they don’t test on animals, but if they don’t have the leaping bunny logo then that means they haven’t been approved. It is usually because the parent company tests on animals or only the finished products (not the individual ingredients) are not tested on animals.

I think what a lot of people don’t realize is that the FDA does not require that cosmetics and personal care products be tested on animals. Only stuff that has an active ingredient requires testing. Why make animals suffer needlessly?

I honestly have never really thought about companies testing on animals, I know some do, but it never seemed real until I’ve seen photos and such. I just googled to see if my cologne/deodorant and shampoo/body wash (Axe) are tested on animals and they do. (Barn owls mainly.) I don’t know what other brands of cologne to try because most make me sick because of the smell, I can deal with a different shampoo and deodorant, but cologne is something I’m picky on. Could someone possibly suggest a new brand for me to try that isn’t expensive, please?

BunnyDaddy- If you are on Facebook, you can ask on the LeapingBunny’s page. That’s what I do when I’m looking for a certain product. Bath and Body stores have men stuff, so I’m assuming cologne, you could check there if you have a store near you.

Is Kiss my Face really cruelty free? I have seen several products at my store and I looked at the back of the item and it does not show or state anything about cruelty free O_O Their products look amazing but I don’t want to touch them if they are not cruelty free.

FF — Do you have any Super Supplement stores near you? My dad had to go there for some vitamins yesterday and there is a pretty big section devoted to cruelty free cosmetics and such

I love Alba Botanica – they’re leaping bunny certified, and I use their face wash, face/body scrub, and shaving lotion. I also love Urban Decay for cosmetics. Also, Sonia Kashuk products (sold at Target) are not tested on animals and are cruelty-free (although not leaping bunny certified); you can go to their website or facebook and read their statement on animal testing. I use their face makeup (powder and concealer), and have used their mascara in the past. I use Tom’s toothpaste, although I didn’t know that they were owned by a company that tests on animals. I also use Burt’s Bees lotions and lip products.
