So I have 2 Lionhead boys. And they love to chew their indoor hutch. In 2 months the door is barely hanging on.

So my wife decided to buy a Critter Nation 2 story cage for them with ramp covers. Returning it will cost $100. Ugh. I’ve read nothing but bad things about these for Rabbits. However it IS worth noting that these boys have a roughly 6’x5′ pen accessible to them at all times. The cage/hutch is mainly for safe sleeping time.

Is there any way I can salvage this situation? Maybe only use the bottom half for rabbits and the top half for storage? My rabbits love to jump up and out of the “second story” (~1.5ft) window to their wooden hutch some just up down up down like it’s a game. So maybe not having the ramp up to the second level? Shrug.

Either way I was thinking of building something for underneath the cage as an additional area.

If it’s only used for sleep and they have 24/7 access to their pen (though we occasionally open it up to the entire living room) would this setup work?

PLEASE help me salvage this and save my marriage. (Just kidding. Marriage isn’t in jeopardy. But still… Gotta follow through with mistakes I guess.)

Side note: I’m probably gonna chop up their current hutch and remove any metal and allow them to devour it. Apparently it’s tastier than any treat. So I guess there’s that.

What parts of it can you take apart? Is every wall removable, can you lift the 2nd story off of the first story? I think if you remove the ramp, that second platform is hoppable, so that first floor could be the extent of the safe sleepy spot. A+ points if you can remove the 2nd floor, but keep the “ceiling”, because then they can hop on top to sleep up there.

I’d get carpet squares or something else to get more traction on those trays to better encourage and make jumping more comfortable.

I used a Ferret Nation for two of my past bunnies. I didn’t like the small footprint but I made it work. One half was for my lionhead and the other half for my mini rex.

I removed the ladders since mine loved to jump as well. I also added a cardboard box under the shelf for a hide spot. I used clip on food and water dishes so they didn’t take up space.

I can’t remember if the pans in the critter nation are noisy like the ferret nation. If the are I took fleece blankets and “wrapped” the pans so they didn’t rattle.

My mini rex was free range other than during the night. So I attached an x-pen to the bottom half and gave my lionhead that space plus her half of the ferret nation 24/7.

I’m thinking of doing something similar as to what you did with your Lionhead. What did you use as a ramp from out of the cage or did you have it on the floor?

Well it’s kinda weird. Technically it’s 4 floors. 2 full ones and 2 half floors. I can remove the top half’s half floor. Other than that I can’t do much.
