so my bunny who is about 8 or 9 months old is nueterd and WAS potty trained, but lately i’ve been noticing she hasn’t been doing her business in her litter tray as much as usual, but instead its all over her cage. its one of those ones with a wire bottom, and a tray underneath…

so i’m trying to figure out why theres bunny business all over the floor in the cage, and i see her jump onto the roof of the cage and just start peeing! what gives!? i was thinking maybe it was a fluke or something, but she’s going up there more and more in the past week.

it gets on the wall, and then behind the cage, and sits there and by time i get home from work and clean it, she just does it again… the hardwood floor behind the cage is starting to turn color and its just plain gross. like for example i was having a heart to heart about my relationship with my boyfriend the other day and low and behold in the background all you hear is trickling of Bonnie peeing from the roof and these little clanking noises of her poops falling from the sky. way to have great timing, bun.

but really… WHAT GIVES!?!?! has anyone encountered this before!? or have ANY idea what to do!?!? i’m at my wits end!!

My opinion is the wire bottom is letting her get away with going whereever she wants-theres no mess so she doens’t need to use the box. Cover the floor with paper or cardboard and put a litter box in, put pee and poo in the box. Start from there.

i agree with K&K. the cage set-up is giving her permission to do things this way. you say she was trained before? maybe she just realized that she can do this and now it’s becoming a habit? once buns realize they can do something, it’s hard to break that. she’s a bunny, so she does not understand that this makes a bigger mess…

my suggestion is to cover up the floor of the cage with a cut piece of linoleum like K&K suggested. cover it completely so her only option is the litterbox and then you’ll need to start over with training. maybe do this over a weekend (if you’ll be home) so you can clean up any pee accidents right away. put hay in the litterbox and pick up any stray poos immediately. keep the floor very clean (this is why linoleum would be a better option than cardboard- it can be wiped clean). limit her out of cage time until she is using the box again. i would wipe down the cage very well, and block off the top so she doesn’t get any ideas to try it again.
