So my bunny went in today to have her spay done… But! Apparently, she has already been spayed! I am so confused.

I mean, she has always been a really good bunny. I just thought I was lucky. I thought, man how much sweeter could this bunny get after she is spayed? lol

The reason I am so confused is because we got her from a pet store. She is two years old now, and when we got her, she was very young. She wasn’t tiny like how some places sell rabbits that are too young you know? But she was still a baby. It didn’t seem like she stopped growing for about a year, so she was obviously young. The pet store didn’t know if she was a male or female, and they said that their rabbits are not spayed. So we called the pet store today after the vet called to tell us she was already spayed, and the pet store will not tell us where they get their rabbits!!!

The guy on the phone was really weirdo and said he knew where they get the rabbits but he can’t say. I’m like okay so what this is super top secret information? It’s not like I couldn’t get a job there and find out myself where they get their rabbits. This isn’t government information lol how stupid!

My rabbit has been to two different vets and neither knew she was spayed. I guess it’s harder to tell on little tiny animals than dogs or cats. Do they not have a scar that is visible when shaven for surgery? I am just so confused by this whole situation. It’s the weirdest thing ever! I feel so bad that my bunny had to go through all of this.

Has anyone else had an experience like this or heard of anyone else who has??? So weird…

That’s so weird! I got my bunny from a pet store too… They told us she was a female but I don’t think she’s spayed (we’re going have that done soon). I’ve never heard of anything like that happening before! Strange that the person at the pet store won’t tell you where they get their rabbits… Seems kinda creepy to me.

Petco spays and neuters all their rabbits and they are VERY YOUNG. They come from Marshall Farms. There is hardly anyway to know if a female is spayed unless you can see a spay scar. i’ve rescued a few rabbits who were spayed and the ONLY way to know if to actually open them up unless it’s a very fresh spay and you can see a scar.

I have heard of this happening before. Some vets will actually ink a small dot tattoo on the belly so when the bun is shaved, this will alarm the new vet that the procedure has already been done. How’s your bun doing now?

I didn’t get her from a petco though… I got her from a local store who says their rabbits aren’t spayed, and couldn’t tell me if she was male or female.

It’s a long story how I came to adopt from a pet store vs a shelter. Please know I wouldn’t normally adopt from a store.

Anyway she is doing great. She’s a little sore, but she’s eating, drinking, and using the potty. She’s giving me lots of bunny kisses so I know she doesn’t hate me at least. I feel so bad for her going through this.

I really need to find out where this pet store gets their rabbits! It’s driving me crazy trying to figure out how she came to be there in that condition. If they don’t spay, who did it???

Does she have any small dot like tattoos in her ears? I know she didn’t come from Petco but that’s how you can identify the rabbits from their breeding facility.

Sometimes people will abandon pets at pet stores.

We had a cat that had been abandoned at a pet store. It was so funny b/c the store didn’t actually carry larger animals, just small ones, so there was this fluffy little kitten sitting in a bird cage next to another bird cage with some very upset looking birds staring at it. The pet store owner said a guy had walked in with the kitten tried to talk him into buying it. Right after the owner said “no” the phone rang. When he got back from answering the phone the guy trying to sell the kitten was gone but the kitten was still there.

Your bunny may have come from a pound or petco originally where she was spayed, then been sold to or abandoned at the pet store where you got her. If they just take any bunny that walks in off the street, they may not really want that info getting out.

The feed store I got Leopold from takes animals from people and rehomes them. What Eepster said does make a lot of sense, it definitely could happen.

I don’t know – she mentions that Bella was very young when she got her she was young, so certainly it’s possible but that doesn’t make since if Bella was a baby. But a drop off is certainly a possibility although in my rescue experience those dropped off rabbits are rarely altered.

They probably don’twant to tell you because they may get their rabbits from a puppy mill-like place, and don’t want to expose their shame…??

Just for clarity in my old brain…the vet had her open for a spay and discovered her bits were already gone? WOW

Yes-perhaps she was taken into the pet store, or perhaps (and this is a long shot) the pet store employees haven’t got a clue and all their rabbits are fixed before they come to them (that was a joke-well about the long shot hehe)-Is it a big box pet store? I would go on their website-or just demand to speak to a manager. I thought there was some kind of law that they have to tell you where they get their animals from…if it’s a big deal anyways. Wowza what a story!!

Oh and another possibility though -I don’t know…what if she was purchased, fixed by a responsible pet owner, but then surrendered because of changing circumstances?

                              So many things are possible!

And yes, that is correct. She was on the table open before the vet knew. She said there wasn’t a visible scar (and after researching I found this to be the case many times!) she doesn’t have any kind of tattoo either to say that she has been spayed. What if she was born without the parts!? I of course would be someone to pick a bun like that though

I have another update for you guys. I physically went to the pet store today where I met with a really nice lady. She is a manager there and was helpful. She told me when the owner is available so I can come in or call to speak with him. She gave me a card with the times and info and said that she will get in contact with the breeder as soon as she can.

The store is a small place. The woman there said that they have used the same breeder for nine years, and that they never purchase from puppy mills and certainly don’t condone such practice. So I hope that is true… I do remember once going in there (I used to go there just to visit their animals lol) and seeing this cat who lives there. It was a big ol fluffy! So I’d go play with him. Anyway, the girl told me that day about how that cat was brought in by this man who threatened to kill the cat if she didn’t take it. She was in tears! So yeah…

Today she told me that it could have been possible that the bunny we have was dropped off by some pet owner. She said they often have boxes with animals outside when she arrives at the store. My bun was a baby when we got her, but she wasn’t tiny tiny like some of the buns you see in pet stores. Still, she was pretty small. She is a dutch though, so they are generally a little smaller anyway. Idk, this whole thing is crazy. I just feel so bad that she is losing this time in her life that she could be hopping around playing having fun.

I will let you all know if I ever find out the crazy truth to how my bun came to be in such a manner.

Please, please DO NOT FEEL BAD! You did what was necessary to protect her health and lengthen her life. You didn’t know, the vet didn’t know, and the pet store (allegedly) didn’t know that she was already spayed. I suppose you could have asked for an ultrasound prior to check for the organs, but very few people would do that as it adds a couple hundred bucks to the cost, AND there’s a very small chance the bun is already spayed. Your case really is one of those 1 in 100 situations.

Well, what you did was necessary. There was no way for you or for the vet to know.

It is usually only Humane Societies or rescue groups that use tattoo ink to mark the incision.

What happened is pretty darn rare!  And I would have to think that it was done before you got her and she was a drop off from another pet store.  Find out if “their breeder” breeds or bred Dutch bunnies.
