Craigslist is never a good idea to look at, but I’m really need a bunnysitter next week.

Of course I had to look at the bunny ads… I found this one where the person (probably a college student) has two rabbits that don’t get along.  I’m guessing they’re not fixed (probably both females), so they are getting rid of one.  The picture of the sad lop is definitely in a pet store cage.

I did the impulse thing of replying with this:

If you get your two rabbits fixed, they will be much easier to bond (less hormones = less aggression).  I have two rabbits too (one of mine is also a rex) and experience bonding them, so if you need help bonding them, I would be happy to help you (I live *edit “next town over”*).  Also, getting them fixed makes it a cinch to litter box train them.  Once they’re bonded, its not really any more work than one, and the bunnies are much happier off. Anyway, let me know if you decide to keep your rabbit and need help bonding/litter training the two.

        I hope I didn’t sound too mean, I’m just trying to help/educate.

        What would you do/have done?

You didn’t sound mean, but don’t be surprised if you get a defensive reply, or none at all. If they would rather give away a bun on craigslist than research proper bonding techniques, likely they aren’t too open to the idea of keeping the second to begin with. I got Stickers from craigslist, but I try not to look too much – I always want to take all the animals home!

             I got a reply!

Hi _____, thank you for the input, however I just don’t have the funds to get them fixed. Is there a way to bond them without getting them fixed? They literally fight through their cages at each other, it’s scary sometimes. Thank you again for the advice. – _____

I replied back with: make sure to they are both the same sex before attempting to bond unaltered bunnies, a few short points on bonding (car rides, neutral terrirtory, daily sessions), and then stress the importance of fixing the bun she is going to keep.

Have you given the person the link to this site? If they are going to be trying to bond the two, they might want a lot more support!
As for getting them fixed, I always recommend that they speak to vets in the area, including any vet colleges in the area that have exotics vet specialists (its not common, but its possible) and find out if they would be willing to set up payment arrangements or something. There are also some programs through the SPCA (I think) that give assistance to animals to get them fixed. The person could just start calling and see if they can find some help. Tell them to be diligent about it and dont give up easily.

Have her check with local rescues as well, sometimes they have spay/neuter assistance to those that can’t afford it on their own. I know a certain bunny group here that does

Yeah I’m with Monkeybun. Try to see if there is a rescue that will help, I bet there is.

It’s dangerous for me on Craigslist… some animals I see and I feel bad and just want to take them home (like bunnies poorly taken care of, or rats) and then they have that”free” label on them, which is even scarier.
