Cottons vet visit.

Well…. Cotton put up a big fuss.   The lady vet said this is really strange.  She got the other vet and he checked Cottons teeth said they were ok.  The vet asst has to hold Cotton he was fussing up a storm.

His lip is swollen and it is only his bottom one.  So he was prescribed Baytril and to come back in 2 weeks when his vet will be back.

If not healed up then a biopsy will be in order.  Oh boy.  She mentioned might be an allergy but is strange only affects his lower lip not his whole mouth area.  I did stop giving him blueberries in any form.  He has had those for a straight year. 

I ordered him some cookies but not blueberry ones.  Just in case.  We will see.

Why would you think that blueberries are the cause? Did she mention a possible allergy to this?

Hopefully the baytril will help.

If they have to do a biopsy usually the info they get from those is very valuable- the pathologist can determine what types of cells are present and what is the usual cause of those cells and if it is normal or abnormal.

Does Cotton “chin” anything?  I wonder if there is something that he is chinning that could have detergent residue (from cleaning) or something outside that has fertilizer or chemical residue or something else that could cause skin irritation.  But it would most likely be something that he would be exposed to at least weekly to have the irritation be continual and not heal.

I doubt it would be from a direct result from eating a certain food- I would suspect more if the food contained something irritating and as the bunny chews and pulls the veggie, greens, grass, hay, etc that it rubs against the chin.  I love to watch my bunnies do their “chipper/shredder impersonation”!

Cotton hardly chins anything.  He does scratch at it very daintily sometimes. 

Blueberries… well I have given them a year and thought maybe however I doubt it since it didnt’ clear up.

I wonder if it is his litter. I ran out and have been using hay til tomorrow.  His lip isn’t better tho. So probably not that either.

The vet isn’t sure it is an allergy herself.  She has seen this in cats but not rabbits. The lip thing that is.  It may be an infection but it is on the surface.  Which is weird for it to still be there too.  I told her I have metal bowls for him now and wash them daily.  He refuses to drink from a bottle. 

I hope it clears up.  Back to chasing him 2x a day oh he is gona hate this.  At least it is quick and easier then putting salve on his lip.  For now.\

OH and it is time for nail trims and anals.  OH great. This is going to be difficult.

I’m inclined to agree with your intuition that it could be the blueberries. Allergies are funny things, and since it’s a fruit that’s easily removed from his diet, it won’t hurt to try. The way to find allergies is to remove one at a time, so that might help. Also, it’s possible that it’s not an allergy, but the juice dribbled and irritates the spot repeatedly as it is a bit acidic I think.

Wasn’t his lip boo boo from a nip from Ruby? Cuts & bites can develop abcess quickly from what I’ve heard. Also, could he have had a reaction the the salve?

At this point I am not sure if it was/is indeed a booboo from Ruby.  It looked like this when I brought him in in feb.  Not like his upper lip right under his little nose.  This  Looks different then and now.

I changed the litter to the recycled newspaper stuff. Even got them both new litterboxes too.  Now Cotton has more room in his house.  

The vet did test and was no abcess or infection at that time.   She think now it may be an infection just below the surface. The first test in Feb showed inflammation and that was all.  It was puzzling to the vet then.

He isn’t happy about his medicine.  I just gave it to him and he in inisde his house now.  I try to get a close look at his lip but he kicks and squirms even in the towel.   It isn’t red anymore that I can see.   I really hope this clears it up.

If you want Cotton to drink from a bottle, try rubbing a cut open cherry (he likes cherries, right?) onto the bottle’s spout several times per day. Even Mops learnt this way and he was the kind of bun that would sit beside a full water bottle, thirsting…

When you do it, you have to still encourage them, several repetitions might be necessary but Mops got it. Make sure the juice of his/her favorite fruit is at the part of the spout where the little ball is. Usually they will sniff it out quickly.

Cotton has 3 more doses.  I hope this is all he needs.  It is getting harder to put the med in his mouth.  It ended up squirted on the floor this time.  I refilled and got it in him. I measured and have the final 3 doses that he needs in that med bottle of his.

I have to wrap him so tight his front feet can’t get out and have a really really tight grip on his head else he squirms and this time the med squirted on the floor.

I hope I can get the other 3 doses in him without waste.  Part of his lip is turning pink.   The bottom part near the hair looks like a little bump when he kicked the scab off yesterday.  He regrew another one.  This is so gross to be talking about.  It seems red there too.

Personally I think it is going to take a biopsy.  

Even so he has carefresh litter now and super clean bowls. In case of allergy. I haven’t tried the bottle again.  What Petzy said is a great way to get them to drink from one.   The one I have leaks drives me nuts.   When we go back to the vet I am going to ask if I should change him over to bottle. 

Oh Cotton please heal.   He doesn’t run from me hopefully he won’t start.
