cottons biopsy

Goodness   Well Mr. Cotton Boo Bun’s biopsy showed inflammation.   From possible infection of unknown origin. Need culture to find the type of infection.

The vet said no where to get culture from since they had a piece of his lip already.  IT didnt’ show infection just inflammation.

So Cotton got a shot this time of anti inflammatory.  He goes back tomorrow and if it is better he will get anther longer lasting one.

OH dear. Poor Cotton. 

He hasn’t been coming to the couch for pettings since SAturday visit to vet.  HE came last ntie hopefully he will get back to normal and not be mad for long.    Hopefully he will heal this time too

Yes, keep us updated. This sounds exactly like what Bailey had on her ears, (even the photo you had a while back showed thata similar red little nodule). Bailey’s would come and go though, though one stayed there for most of her life – and the cultures would always come back as inflammation only (not infection) and the source was never found. It was always such a mystery to my vet. As Bailey aged though, they just began to go away or at least lessen and flatten out.
So even though Bailey is gone now, I always wondered what the heck those things were and so I am interested to know if the inflammation meds end up working for Cotton.

BB mentioning Bailey’s ear brings up something I wonder about sometimes. Can rabbits get grass seeds imbedded into their skin like dogs can. I’ve heard grass seeds can get under a dogs coat and one point and work itself to a different part of the body. With hay mixes that have all sort in it, I wonder if rabbits can be affected by this or does their constant grooming keep on top of it? Couldn’t they get splinters embedded in their skin?

WEll it didn’t work either.  The vet is stumped.  She took a piece of scab and sent it for a culture. Results could be 3-10 days. She is doing this for free at this point.  That is so sweet of her.

She also took pictures and said they came out good.  Mine of his  lip never did. Glad hers did.

So at this point it looks like he might be stuck this way.

OH yeah the vet is going to consult with a vet in tampa who is supposed to be good and she will send him the pics too.

Well BB Cotton has 3 scabs one in the middle and the 2 on each side.  Hmm so Bailey was a mystery too.  I emailed Dana Kempbels but she never answered.  Maybe cuz I have a vet looking into this. I know Dana is busy.

Hmm so Bailey’s went away pretty much as she got older.  Poor Bailey. Looks like Cotton may be in that category. Hope so especially if they can’t find anything with the culture.  This is getting frustrating.        Actually I am sad about it right now.

I wonder, do bunnies (or other animals) get those ‘skin tags’? Could it be something like that? (that’s what BB’s description reminded me of) Or is it an actual cut?
I know my dogs have quite a few ‘fleshy moles’. Sometimes they get scabbed up and look pretty nasty. And sometimes they just go away on their own.

Skin tags?  whats that?    I have to go look it up.  

With Cotton the 1 just kept growing and growling.  Then they get hung up on something and it comes off.  Underneath it might bleed a tiny bit.

Doesn’t look like a skin tag.  I found pictures of them.  What Cotton has can be easily pulled off and it bleeds a little.  Plus the skin around it is broken some too.

Dang poor Cotton.

Wow, that’s so frustrating for everyone isn’t it! I bet the vet is going to be able to come up with something moreso that Dana Krempels will since she can consult with another vet and do the culture. Poor little Cotton and poor you – it’s so frustrating not knowing!

I got a reply from medirabbit.  She sent the article she has on pappilomas virus.  The antelop/rabbit urban legend thing has some truth to it.  The growths are this papiloma virus thingy.

I emailed it to my vet in case it is that.  Or it is something she can look into.

Skin tags I think I did hear her mention it when she asked the other vet in the office to come see.  An ant possibly bit him  some months ago too when I fed him some roses that had ants and I didn’t know it they were hiding inside the petals. I wonder if that is what started all this.

OH well… time will tell 3-10 days… I am so sad and wondering if he will just have to live with it.   OH that papiloma virus thingy is supposed to be passed from rabbit to rabbit and insect to rabbit.   Ruby doesnt’ seem to have anything wrong with her.  When I bring Cotton back I might just bring Ruby too.  That is if they haven’t found the problem.

I know it is kind of hard for someone to diagnose by computer.  I did send medirabbit a picture.  If it does turn out to be this virus she would like some clearer pictures as my camera my good one doens’t seem to be able to get a good clear picture.  Believe that.  lol. I am going to try the other camera and see.

Some other site mentioned could be syphyllis.   Hmm Cotton what have you been doing while I am out?  lol

The pics it kind of looked like it.  But Ruby doesn’t seem to have any symptoms.   oh well

Just guessing right now.   Will know more of what it really is hopefully in 10 days

Can rabbits get herpes infections? I get those nasty cold sores if I eat certain things that I’m allergic to. Does it look like a cold sore? Does it ooze anything when you pull off the scab? But I would think the neosporin would’ve cleared that up? :-/

I looked around online and aparently they can get herpes infections, Ive never heard of rabbit syphilis but it happens?! hmmm thats a thinker…

mrmac – rabbit syphillis is also called “vent” disease – it’s not the same kind of syphillis that can be transferred to and from humans. The sypmtoms are normally sores around the bunny’s anal area and mouth. My very first bunny had it actually! It’s very easy to treat with just a once a week injection for three weeks.

Mimz – I thought there was a discussion about rabbits and the herpes virus before, but for some reason I thought it was a different type as well (kind of like how rabbit syphillis is), but I am not sure. ???  I’ll have to check on that.

The pappilomas virus from what I’ve read does sound “wart” like and there is a HRS blog about one of their rabbits having it and the treatment that is done so far for it. Seems to have come from tick bites? (at least in this case)

Bailey also  had e.cuniculi, so maybe it was an inflammation related to her  weakened immune system.   ??

BT – so you said, you can just scrape off the bumps?  If so, then definitely not what Bailey had.   Hers were definitely more red/wart like and had to be surgically removed or left alone.   (Nothing oozed out of hers either) hmmmm.

Also, what a great vet you have to continue to try and figure it out….for free no less!

I have heard of the pappilomas virus in rabbits. It is good too know that you can give your vet some ideas to look into.

Rabbit syphyllis or vent disease is not passed to people or vice versa.  No Cottons definitely isn’t wart like.  His is definitely scab like.  It bleeds when removed too 

Both of those the vent disease and papoloma are also spread from rabbit to rabbit.  It showed up on Cotton b4 I seperated them I am almost positive.  I checked Ruby’s privates last nite and she looks normal.   I am not sure if it is swollen tho.  When Cottons culture comes back I can ask his Dr. if she wants to check Ruby’s privates too. 

The herpes I think is not passed from rabbits to people and vice versa.  Cotton definitely does not have blisters.  We won’t know for sure yet. The waiting and wondering is not fun.  lol.  e

I felt so bad for Cotton last nite.  HE was chewing his brand new newspaper and his lip must have rubbed on the paper cuz he jumped up and stood not sat but stood on his hind legs all tall and rubbed his feet on the sides of his mouth.   I know it bothers him.  I also saw him turning his head under when he picked up his food too to keep from bumping it.

At this point it is a waiting game.  I haven’t heard from Dr. Luther about the emails I sent.  I think she had already considered these 2 things and her and  her partner ruled them out.

Awe…poor Cotton. And I know it’s never easy to watch our bunnies have to deal with things that make them uncomfortable or cause pain. Hang in there, and just give him some extra lovin’ (as I have no doubt he already gets a ton of from you)

Hi, BT. Sorry it’s been a few days since I replied.

I know the waiting is the hardest part. Try not to self-diagnose, as much as it’s good to have more information. I’m thinking that the other options, like herpes or syphillis, were thought of by your vet already. If she said she doesn’t know what it is, I would hope that means she has already ruled out many of these possibilities. She sounds very, very nice with the free work and the consultation of her colleague.

If Ruby is OK so far, try not to borrow trouble. It’s probably just Cotton.

OH I have definitely  stopped exploring what this could be.  I think the vet did rule out vent disease or bunny syphyllis. 

HE has been coming to me for pets agian. Thats good.     I still see him stand up when he has something that has rubbed on his lip the wrong way poor fellow.

Time for me to go see Ruby and pet her now.  She just loves to be petted.
