› FORUM › DIET & CARE › cookie mixes for rabbits?
Has anyone ever ordered anything from this site? I just stumbled across it, other pages tell you how to grow your own patch of timothy hay, etc.
The cookie mixes look neat but I wouldn’t know how nutritious they are (I’m sure others here could tell if they are or not)

no i haven’t, but speaking of which, someone posted a recipe for homemade bun cookies. can this someone repost the recipe? thanks.
I would wager that if there is Oil added it’s probably a little fattening…but all cookies are right?
I made cookies with just this: In a blender, put carrots and papaya, then folded in whole oats until it was the conistancy of cookie dough; Then baked them. They worked out and the bunnies liked them alot. No oil, sugar or anything like that!
someone, don’t remember who, posted a recipe that used the leftover timothy pellet dust.
someone posted it to me in another question, the url is
http://www.rabbit.org/fun/biscuts.html
here’s the text from the page:
“This recipe came to us from our friends “North of the Border”. Brenda Plaxton, the kitchen whiz who invented it, lives on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada. Brenda originally created these treats for her own buns, Finnegan, Fiona, and Satchmo (her border collie, Brodie, rather likes the biscuits, too!). Brenda shared her own recipe with another Salt Spring Island rabbit lover, Libby Hughes-Klokeid, who then sent it to us.
”
Remember, these are treats, so give them sparingly.
1 small carrot, pureed
1/2 banana, mashed until really creamy
1 tbsp honey
1/4 cup rabbit pellets, ground finely in a coffee grinder
1/4 cup ground oats, ground finely in a coffee grinder
Mix pureed carrot, banana and honey in a medium bowl.
Add pellet powder and ground oats. Mix until blended.
Knead in your hands for 1-2 minutes.
Roll out the “dough” in 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick layers between sheets of plastic wrap.
Cut into small cookies (about 3/4 inch across).
Place cut shapes onto a parchment paper covered cookie sheet.
Bake at 325 degrees for about 30 minutes (check to make sure they are not browning too much).
Turn off the heat and let the cookies sit in the warm oven for an hour or so.

I need to make some bunny cookies, thanks for posting the recipe
I was thinking they’d be a good fund raiser for bunnyfest. I have some tiny garnish cutters that would likely work well as bunny cookie cutters too.
That is a great idea for a fundraiser! As my cooking has a high percentage rate of turning out as a disaster, I’d love to be able to buy healthy treats for my bunch.
Kathy
Kathy – I’ve bought the Auntie Em’s bunny biscuits and my bunnies really enjoy them. I know For Other Living Things sells them via the web, as does Busy Bunny.
“Auntie Em’s Bunny Biscuits are timothy based treats flavored with oat, brome & orchard grasses and sweetened ONLY with organic fruits. These treats were developed specifically for rabbits and use all natural ingredients with no added starches or carbohydrates. Anything and everything used in these biscuits is of the highest quality and is what Auntie Em gives to her own rabbits.”
Aunty Em! Aunty Em! IT’s a twister, it’s a…….sorry……….I’m going to go google now! thanks, Kathy
I’ve used that recipe and it’s great. Here are the recipes I have from a bunny cookie baker friend of mine…
Aggie’s Nana Men (named after her bunny, Aggie…)
small carrot puree (I cheat most of the time and use about two teaspoons of carrot babyfood)
1/2 banana, mashed so it’s really creamy
1 tbsp honey
1/4 c rabbit pellets, ground finely in a coffee grinder
1/4 c ground oats, ground finely in a coffee grinder
mix pureed carrot, banana and hiney in a medium bowl
add pellet and ground oats powder
mix until blended, knead in your hands for about 2 minutes… it should stick together
If you find the mix too sticky add a bit more powder, if not balling add a bit more honey
roll out dough to 1/8 – 1/4 in thick layers between sheets of plastic (saran wrap)
cut with cookie cutters about 3/4inch across.place shapes onto a parchment paper covered cookie sheet (I do this as I find they do not stick or ‘burn’ on the sheet.
Bake 325F for about 30 minutes (ovens will vary) check to make sure they are not browning too much. You can change the time depending on it you want them hard or soft.. remember they will harden if left in the warm oven for an hour or so which is what I do after baking.
Soft cookies will not last long , besides hungry hippos, they do not keep well at room temp. Baking them to hardness you can store in a container at room temp for a long time (not that they last longer than a week in my house).
Variations- this is where you van have fun…
Replace the carrot with apple, pear, blueberries, sweet potato, pumpkin.. use your imagination
For a herby type cookie you can use as the wet: banana, mint, dill and parsley.
I have added in raisins, bunny crack aka cranberries, oat groats, etc to the mix for fun.
Mint Raspberry Drop Cookies
1/3c frozen raspberry – dethaw this to mix
1/2 Tbsp dried mint
1/3 c ground rabbit pellets
3 Tbsp ground oats
knead and form little balls if too hard, you should be able to almost pipet them onto the cookie sheet. Bake at 325F for about 20 minutes, check for browning, should be hard on the outside when done, but not mush when you press it. I make them about the diameter of a quarter.
Fruit Bunny Bummies
2 strawberries
1 apple peeled and cored
1 celery stick
2/3 c of white flour
1/2 c water
Dice/chop all ingredients and then mash. Celery doesn’t mash so dice it up well. Drop teaspoon size onto baking sheet.
Bake at 350F for about 6- 10 minutes until brown
oo – wow, exciting, thanks for sharing those to. since you’re our experienced baker – of the ones you’ve made is there one that’s your favorite?
I have one too and this is the one I posted a long while ago that I modified from the recipe on the HRS web site.
Mine will not eat the ones with ground up pellets in them.
1 small can of 100% pumpkin
1 tblsp of honey
1 mashed banana
4 strawberries
1 1/2 cups oats
3-4 cups of oat flour
Mash banana and strawberries together, I use the bottom of a small juice glass, then add honey and pumpkin, mix well, add otas, mix well and then add 1 cup of oat flour at a time until it is the consistency of pizza dough, place on floured surface and knead until elastic. Roll out to 1/4″ thick and place on cookie sheet covered in oats, use a pizza cutter to cut into 1″ squares. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes then reduce temperature to 250 until light brown and dry. Be sure they do not burn, basically you want them a light brown in color, then just dehydrate them. ![]()
