Converting To A House Rabbit

I recently lost my first rabbit, so now I am down to just one, 16 pound, spayed bunny. Our rabbits usually spend half the year outdoors, and half in large dog kennels in our basement. But, since Charlie doesn’t spray or chew carpet, I am wanting her to live as a full-time house bunny. 

So I guess I just need to know the basics of converting her to house rabbit life! I know the basics of keeping a rabbit, of course- ample space, food, water, etc. But what extras come with keeping rabbits indoors? Right now she’s loose in my room, and is loving it quite a bit, both being able to hang with me and having the extra room to run. 

All I know is I need to litter train her, which shouldn’t be hard. But what else is there to it?

If she is free roam in your room and does not chew, uses her litter box, and the area is rabbit proof then you are well on your way.

How is she currently with the litter box – you mention this is really the only issue – usually it’s best to start in a small space and work out if they are having litter training issues.

Yep, pretty much just have to bring her in and keep her in. :o)

I would recommend still having some type of (large!) safe enclosure for the time being while you work on litter training and make sure that your rabbit proofing is sufficient. Eventually, as she becomes more trustworthy in the house, you can expand into more extended free roam time around the house.

Whoops late reply, sorry!

Anyways, well, she’s never actually been introduced to a litter box before since I’ve had the hardest time finding a good litter, but she’s pretty neat, as far as potty-training goes. I’ve noticed that as long as I give her a place to go, that is the only place she will go.

I got my mom’s okay to take my closet doors down and convert it into a rabbit pen (it’s about 5 feet x 3 feet), and I’ll be using a medium sized kennel as her litter box, basically, but she’ll get the whole closet to herself. I’ll probably add some shelving in there for her to sit on, as well. If I could add extra levels, that would be super cool. Then I plan to clean up more of my room so that she has the run of it except for one side, since the reptile tanks are over there. Just have to get her to stop trying to meet the rats, and we’re good, haha.

It is done! Haha, spent about 6 hours setting this up, and bunny proofing the rest of my room. So she can either be closed into her kennel, into the closet pen, or into the whole of my room.
