Converted parrot cage

Knowing I couldn’t keep my parrots any more due to my daught becoming allergic I wondered what to do w/ their empty cage.

Well… I converted it to a bunny house for our newest arrival. A lionhead whom I’m thinking a naming Gypsy.

The cage is 36″L x 22″D x 38″H.  Lower level contains food, water and litterbox. Lower level floor is grate til litterbox trained. Top level is outdoor carpet that I can take out and hose off.  

Cutest thing is watch him go up and down the ramp.  He does it like 5 times in a row. Reminds me off a kid on the playground slide!

Your bun will probably litterbox train better with solid flooring. With a ”drop-thru” floor they kind of don’t see the point of using a box.

If your daughter is prone to allergies, you might find she reacts to the hay. Lots of people do. Happily, there are alternative hays that don’t cause as much of a reaction. Also methods in handling it to keep the allergies down. Hopefully it won’t be a problem though.

Speaking of playground slides…one of the members on this forum wrote and posted a pic of their lLittle Tikes toddler slide they got cheap off of craigslist. They covered the surface with something like outdoor carpet swatches to give traction, and they said their bunny loves to race up and down it like yours on his ramp! I went so far as to look on eBay what they had in the way of Little Tikes slides to try and find one for my Petie and Dustor but they all were too expensive…so far! lol

So far she’s only allergic to feath and feather dander.  She’s around hay all the time since we have horses and llamas. 

I appreciate the tip about the grid flooring I’ll change that out tonight. He’s already taking to the litter box like a champ

Don’t worry Sam and Lady’s Human  he has pleny of hay!  It’s in there behind the water bottle hence why you can’t see it. He also get timothy grass hay pellets which is nothing but timothy grass hay that been compressed into pellets w/ a lil bit of molases. No fillers or by product stuff. 

Compared to how he was living the last few months he probably think he died and went to heaven.

It’s a pretty cage Can you cover the wire on the bottom? Wire floors aren’t good for bunny feet And litter trainign will be easier with the floor covered

Sounds like a definite improvement!!

What pellets are you using? I have to change to an timothy based soon.

I’m actually using horse hay pellets. It’s strictly timothy hay w/ a tad bit of molases. Certified “Noxious Weed Free”. I buy it from my local tractor supply store. A 40lb bag cost about 13.00 plus tax. The pellets are a little bit on the big size but Gypsy been managing them well.

The brand is STANDLEE Hay Company, Inc.

I’m changing that out tonight. I can actually remove the grid panel floor and move the tray into it’s spot. So no worries Its getting taken care of.

I thought that you needed to use a rabbit pellet to supplement all the vitamins unless you feed a large variety of fresh food?

You do, Sam and Lady – the hay pellets with molasses are just really meant as treat cubes for buns. Unless they get a LOT of fresh veggies (different varieties, I believe 15? different types was the guesstimate) they need a good pellet, like Oxbow Adult, which if you are looking to switch to a timmy based pellet Oxbow is a great one.
