Well i done my research and i decided to take my bun to a local vet to desex her. He said he does 1-2 boys a week and about 1 female a month for the past few years, and he answered all the questions correct. No fasting rabbits, different anasetic (sp) and so on. Plus i got a good impression of him and his clinic from being there in the past.

Meanwhile befor this i sent an email to the local rabbit club asking them if they had a vet they could recommend. I didnt think i would hear back.

Today the woman phoned me and asked why i was getting her desexed “because anything you read on the net about cancer i think is a load of rubbish, they recon it prolongs their life but at 5 or 6 they are getting old anyway” OMG!! I could not belive it!! So i just let her die at middle age “because she is getting old anyway”????

This woman breeds mini lop rabbits so i am putting it down to the fact she is a breader and not a house rabbit owner. They would only be good for her to make money, she wouldnt care about them as a part of the family.

Other then that, she could not mention a vet to me – so i gather she may not take her’s to a vet. She gave me a list of vets around anyway and told me to “just ring around and find one that will desex rabbits”

I am just ssoooo angry at the woman’s attitude!!

Anyway, i have booked Miss Mastashianna in on 17 July for the op. Im still nervous, but i feel it is the right thing to do.

Ah! I think I know who you may have spoken to. If it’s who I’m thinking, she has a book on rabbits and a website too. I think she generally is a rabbit lover but has very different views to the house rabbit and resuce communities. I have been wanting to gather some evidence to send her about the cancer risk. She cites it as a myth on her website. Even if it’s not the same person I’m glad you’ve reminded me of that website. I should follow this up.

The important thing is you feel sure about why you’re having it done and you feel confident in your vet.

Spaying does help.   They dont’ smell if they are spneutered.   They can be quite smelly b4 hand.

Gosh your bun is old anyway when it reachest 5     Yes some breeders have a different mentality and it isn’t a good one.

Jerseygirl yes it is who you think it is! She said she had a book that she had written. I cant remember her name or what she called the book. I was to shocked.

So what is a house rabbits aveage lifespan? From my reading up it is about 10 years is this correct?

Funny you mention the smell bunnytowne, my bun dose not smell at all! Maybe becasue she is a female?

Properly cared for house buns with routine vet care can live to be 10-12 years old. As more people start learning about rabbits, I wouldn’t be surprised if that average lifespan increases further. Like with dogs, larger buns may have a slightly decreased lifespan, while smaller buns may go beyond that 12 year mark.

There is a world of difference betw/ people who breed, and people who simply love, rabbits.

Someone that breeds rabbits and keeps them in the typical cages associated with breeders would certainly not see the benefit of spaying/neutering or even taking her rabbit to the vet.  I am sure she loves her rabbits (in her own way) but it is a different love and bond than with an indoor bunny that you interact with.  And at 5 yrs old they are probably past breeding prime- so that would be “old” to her.

Man… five-years old… that would be like giving up on someone you love when they’re 35 and get high cholesterol. “Oop, there it goes. Well, you’re done. Good knowin’ ya”

                    Guh…

Unfortunetly you will run into a lot of people who don’t care or want to understand the health risks of not desexing thier rabbits. I get mad a lot because there are a lot breeders around where I live and non of them seem to care about the general well being of thier animals. They USE them for profit. Other than that, they are “JUST A RABBIT”. It is really sad how people just don’t seem to care or even want to learn about these amazing creatures. I would’t look into too much. I did and it only upset me. Atleast you are educating yourself and you know that you are doing what is needed to ensure your pet will live a long and healthy happy life.

Unfortunately that attitude is so prevalent about rabbits “just a rabbit”- and some people even feel that way about cats and dogs too.  Whenever I tell anyone that I took my bunny to the vet for not eating- they are even more amazed at that.  Where I am amazed that people would NOT take their pet to the vet if it was ill.

I think this deep love and responsibility is something you either have or you don’t.  It certainly does not seem to be genetic- but more of a personal choice to feel good about taking the best care of our beloved pets and being able to sleep at night know you are doing the right thing- and you are being loved and returning that love.

I think, as much as this is frustrating for you, you know the decision is the right one. It’s unfortunate to come across people who have very different views. I think in the long run though, as sad as it is, it’s helps us make an informed decision, it strengthens what we believe, you know?

Be happy in the knowledge that you love your bunny so much, you want her to have the best possible life
