hi everyone! My rabbits Sage and Chicory were just spayed on Thursday. Sage seems to be recovering pretty well, but Chicory has torn her stitches out. I brought her to the vet early this morning to get it stitched up again. The vet put a plastic cone on her. Chicory is not happy and she won’t eat pellets, but is trying to eat hay, and she can’t drink water, and can’t eat on her own. The cone is just placed a weird way where food doesn’t fit where her mouth is. ANy idea how I can help her through the week? I’m going out to buy hay that will be easier to feed by strand (orchard) and I’ll keep her near me as I go to school, so I can periodically reach in and pass her stuff. I just want her to calm down, she keeps backing up into things to escape the cone.

        Thanks!

If you can make it a point to always supervise, perhaps you can take off the cone when you present pellets and fresh hay, but then immediately put it back on her when she no longer is eating. You can also syringe feed a pellet mash (pellets soaked in water and mashed up) to her directly, if she’s having trouble eating on her own.

Could you get a soft e-collar instead? Or a post-surgery suit?

Thanks for the help! We have like a plastic one with the plastic buckles and a string. In addition, we’ve put a piece of legging on her to cover her stomach. She looks very funny, like a lampshade wearing a black dress and fur boots. She’s figured out how to eat with it on, but now she just takes everything off. We can’t get the cone to stay, it might be a little to loose, but it’s the tiniest one they had. I’m thinking about going to get some vet wrap to cover it, because she can undress herself quite quickly too.
