Hello All,
I am adopting two dwarfs from SaveABunny and will be a first time bunny owner. I am trying to build a bunny condo and need advice/help. For reference, I’ve already built the walls and had the bottom and bottom frame cut.
Are ramps are necessary? They would take away from floor space and I’d like to give them as much space inside.
Do the floors need wood on top of it? Or, is covering the grids with carpet/rugs/mats sufficient?
Would I need the wood support under the grids since they are dwarfs?
Any advice on how to attach wheels to the bottom of the plywood bottom?
Keep in mind that I don’t have any power tools (not even sure if I can screw the frame together w/o a drill!) and apparently, there is no one available at the local home improvement store to cut in the evenings so the less wood working the better.
What I used for my shelves was just cardboard wrapped in fleece. It seems to work well for my girls. They are both small, 1.5 and 2.5 lbs, and they don’t have any problems jumping up onto the shelves, so I didn’t need ramps at all. You’ll just have to see if they are the jumpy kind of buns or if they prefer having something to hop on
I also didn’t need the wood supports, I used a billion zip ties though! or so it seemed anyway ![]()
Hi miaeih, congrats on the bunnies!
to answer your questions,
1) Ramps are not always necessary, depending on if your bunnies are jumpers. If one of them turns out to not be a jumper (or both) ramps are very easy to add.
2) My flooring is wood (on top of the grids) with peel and stick linoleum on top. My bunny is a chewer and chews (and spits out) the linoleum when she gets bored enough. When I redo my condo I’m definitely not going to use it again -.- I’ve heard of some members here using old tshirts or carpeting on top of wood. I like the wood idea since its so strong.
3) I have the wood supports, just because I wanted my condo to be as strong as possible. It depends on you though
4) I didnt put wheels on mine because I have wood floors so it isn’t hard to slide around.
This is the website I used to build my condo. They probably answer all your questions

My buns should be about 2lbs-ish each so maybe cardboard will work then. I have been using that rabbit condo site, thanks for making it
, it’s just that I don’t have tools. If I had a drill or a handyman in my back pocket, I think all issues would be solved. I had detailed plans laid out but expected the store to be more helpful for the execution.
Can you go to a different store? I bet that must be incredibly annoying!
Welcome and congratulations! Would you mind sharing their SAB names? I enjoy looking at the profiles, the photos are always fantastic.
What floors do you plan to have the condo standing on? Could you use something other then wheels? There are those nylon floor protecter things. Basically a disc of plastic that you put on the legs of armchairs etc. Those you could stick on with a wood glue.
They seem to have two pages: this one and this one. I always wonder who writes the profiles. All humane societies and recues have such cute profiles for their animals.
My floor is carpet; even with wheels, it’s not easy to move things. I plan to have two doors, one on the bottom front and one on the top back. The shelves will be more secure this way.
I gave up and posted on craiglist for someone to finish the wood portions LOL. I got a screw stuck, can’t screw it in any more or remove it; the screw is getting damaged. So talented. On the other hand, I see lots of ppl willing to do mini projects. Maybe I can sketch up something much nicer once I get to know the buns’ preferences and get someone to make it for them.
Those 2 look like they have some spunk. How long before you bring them home?
It sounds as if you’ve put a bit of thought into the habitat so getting the wood components right (even if it means hiring someone) is a good thing. It should only have to be done once then.
I plan on picking them up on Sunday; I’ll be spending Saturday morning shopping. Can’t wait to pick them up but I have nothing for them yet (except the condo top)!
welcome! There is a saveabunny volunteer on this forum as well and he mentioned something about 2 dwarfs getting adopted
yay! Must have pictures please? ![]()
I built Porky’s condo completely out of grids, and used no ply wood at all. The only tools involved were wire cutters (to cut the cable ties (aka zip ties)) and pliers (it just made it easier to tighten the cable ties.) I could have done with just scissors though, the tools just made it a bit faster.

LOL — I have the same talent as you. Thank goodness my husband is good at this kind of thing .
One of our Members, Mocha, had someone built a really neat bunny condo from scratch. (I think her dad?) She might be able to share the plans with you or something??…that you could give to the handyman/gal. Here is the link that displays the photos https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tab…fault.aspx (BUT DON’T RESPOND IN THAT thread as it’s an old one and for reference only)
EDITED: I just realized you already started the cubes! I am in too much of a hurry tonight– not reading thoroughly. ![]()
You could make things simple and go with an xpen. I personally love those — easy to clean too
Congrats on your new bunnies! They look absolutely adorable. I know they won’t be with you until Sunday. But how exciting!
They are soooooo cute!!! Hope you’re having fun with them! ![]()
Just wanted to share the pics I have so far

I still need to finish it (I haven’t cut all the ties but they are pointed outward) and furnish it properly (need a bit more permanent “step” instead of the boxes since one likes to chew on the box… it will eventually collaspe lol). There is “wallfabric” in one corner because I bought one grids off of craigslist and they were the larger ones. This was apparently a really good idea b/c they really like it and it also serves as shade. I may put up some more later.
