I just bought a contrete form to use as a tunnel/digging toy. The inside of the tube has some sort of lubricant, when I rub it, it comes off & I can feel it on my hands. Is this ok for rabbits? I don’t want to give it to them if it’s not. I have read some posts that some of you use them. Has anyone noticed this, or is it just the kind that I got?

Personally I wouldn’t risk it. If it’s returnable I’d suggest taking it back and buying one (maybe elsewhere) that is untreated inside and out. Maybe they have a different one you can exchange it for.

I Bought one similar to that one at Home Depot, I had read a suggestion to get a cardboard tunnel somewhere on the internet. My rabbit loves laying in it. Mine does not seem to have any kind o Lubracant. well at least not that I noticed. but mu Rabbit seems to not chew the tunnel so I think it is fine. Well what I would suggest is that you taste the stuff that is in the tunnel and if it tastes nasty then send the tunnel back. It is a weird way of checking if someting is safe but thats what I do to check if the wood I am giving my rabbit is safe and non treated (baskets, Wood chunks I get at home depot.)

Mine does not have any kind of lubricant at all.  I think I would take that back too and go somewhere else. That’s weird.

yeah, i think they are just supposed to be plain cardboard… maybe go back and ask if they have a different kind. i tend to pick up the first thing i see and it’s usually wrong… lol.

ya, since bunnies nibble and lick everything, I wouldn’t recommend giving it either, since they’re likely to ingest some of the lubricant.

I looked at them at home depot recently and they do seem to have a thin wax coat on the inside. I’m still debating on picking some up, we’ve got lots of boxes from moving and I’d like to make a tunnel/play structure for them.

Ick! I wonder what that stuff is on the inside? I have one and it doesn’t have that stuff on it. I also wouldn’t recommend it. You might want to ask the store what it is.

I’ve gotten several of these before, usually from Harbor Freight, and they had no coating.  They were plain cardboard in & out, much like a sturdier paper towel roll.  I would exchange for a non-treated one.  I just checked Google, there are some made w/ lubricant and others w/o.  It depends on your usage.  The big ones I’ve gotten in the past often cost about $8 and had no coatings.

We are going to take it back, we got it at Lowe’s. There may have been two kinds, but it didn’t look like it. They may have the ones w/o coating. If not, there’s a Home Depot & Harbor Freight close by.
                          Thanks everyone!

I recently got in touch with someone from Quikrite (The company that produces the cardboard tubes at many hardware stores such as lowes).

They informed me that their tubes are coated with a paraffin wax.  While I don’t believe this is particularly toxic to bunnies, it may cause an upset tummy if ingested.  That being said, it is a very thin coat.

                              Hi Limadean,

Thanks for your reply, that is useful information! I’ve gone ahead and approved your post since it is helpful for anyone finding this thread, but we ask members not to reply to old threads to avoid confusion. This thread is 12 years old so I’ve gone ahead and closed it. But thanks for the concrete tube homework. I’ve bought the type you describe, and was able to just peel away that paraffin layer.  🙂
