        Hey everyone!

So mochi just got her surgery, she’s officially spayed!!
I know it was the right decision, however, I am a first timer at doing this.. it’s currently 1:25am where I am because I’m afraid of falling asleep and Mochi hurting herself and/or licking at her incision which her vet said not to do. Should I set an alarm every 2 hours to check on her? I’ve already caught her once licking at it.. Also, my manager only let me request two days off work so after tomorrow I’ll have to go back to work which freaks me out because I’m afraid of lea omg her alone. Any tips on what I can do to prevent her from possibly hurting herself?? Or any tips in general about the post care for spayed buns? Her vet didn’t give me any medication for her to take home but said they gave her a pain killer that should last her about 48 hours.. after those 48hrs are up and IF she is still feeling pain how would I tell? Or what can I do to help? Anyone have any experience with BENE-BAC powder for rabbits? I was told I could use it for after surgery but unsure of what it does to benefit my bubs. Also, she won’t let me check her incisions is there a specific way i should go about that?!? Please.. i don’t want her feeling uncomfortable more than she already does.. I’ve watched and read countless articles about post op but they don’t cover all of my questions and concerns.

Update 8/2/2018 9:26 pm she’s eaten very few. Her poops very from normal sizes to teen tiny poops kinda clumped together.. I bought her someNatrual Science Vitamin C tabs by Oxbow and she munched on that. What can I do? What does this mean?

          Hi!

Is she eating? Eating and pooping after a spay are the most important thing.

Most bunnies tend to leave the wound alone, so unless she gets particularly obsessed with it, she should be fine. Licking at it once isn’t a problem, but you don’t want it to turn into a habit.

It’s important that bunnies have painkillers to help them recover, so it’s not ideal that your vet didn’t give you one. If she’s overly bothering the wound, it could be because it’s causing her pain. Not eating and huddling / looking uncomfortable are also signs of pain.

I believe bene bac is a probiotic, but I’m not sure how it’s administered. What form is it in?

To check the incisions, try holding up a treat and see if she’ll stand up to eat it. You can also put a mirror on the floor to get a better look.

The other thing to do is keep her in a smaller space than usual so she doesn’t accidentally tear the stitches open.

She’s eating but only a little bit, I try hand feeding her but she gets upset and takes the hay from my hands and tosses it else where but I’ve seen her nibble on some hay here and there nothing like her normal eating habits though. She’ll only drink water if it’s from a syringe.

She was pooping yesterday, however today I woke up around 7am cause she made a mess in her cage so I had to clean it out so her incision doesn’t get infected and it’s now 12:44pm and she hasn’t pooped yet.

She’s not completely obsessed with her wound however I’ve got her either trying to lick at it and or licking it before I stop her then she’ll stop and won’t do it for a while.

I was expecting the Vet to prescribe her some pain killers but she said they’d already given her a dose that should last her 48hrs I’m just concerned what I can give her after those 48hrs are up and if she’s still feeling in pain.

As for the bene bac it’s in a powder form, the girl at the counter said I can put a bit of it in her water and or sprinkle it in her food but I’m not exactly sure what’ll do for her (Mochi) didn’t really go into depth other than most rabbits take it after surgery or an illness or after giving birth.

I didn’t even think about putting a mirror on the floor for a better look! Thank you!! What exactly should I look for?

It’s good that she’s eating a bit. Will she eat veg or pellets? At this stage, it’s important that she eats, so it doesn’t have to be the stuff that is best for her!

If she’s not eating enough, you may need to force feed her with critical care, or a mash made of pellets and water.

My vet prescribed oral painkillers for 5-7 days after the spay. It might be worth calling the vet and asking if you can go and collect some. Painkillers will definitely encourage her to eat mroe.

Benebac is a probiotic, so it encourages good bacteria in the gut. It’s normally given after antibiotics, which can kill the good bacteria. There’s no harm in giving it, but it’s not normally a standard after spay medicine.

Make sure that the wound doesn’t look too inflamed, that it’s not open, and that it’s not infected. It will probably still look a bit raw, but the area around it should be clean. If you check every day, you should get a good idea of whether its healing.

she’s doing much better today! she ate a good amount of cilantro and even ate a strawberry! still not drinking much water though

she let me pick her up for a split second today and her incision looks.. fine? i think. there was a tiny part where it was a little red i’m not sure if that’s normal? she still tries licking st it and idk how much she’s done it especially when i’m away at work :/ are there any ointments or something i can use on her to help the healing process or to prevent infections??

also, i called the clinic where she got her surgery and they said that the 48hr pain killers should’ve been enough and that if she needed more i’d have to go to my vet to get more! i found it a tad bit ridiculous, i should’ve been provided with it for a just in case moment!

thank you so much for all your help, i truly appreciate it. As a bun parent i want the best for her, i broke down crying today because i just felt so bad for putting her thru this but i know it’s what she needed to live a healthy life.

Spays require Metacam for several days after the surgery. It’s not like boys’ neuters. They’re very invasive, very painful, and can impact eating and GI function. Just because bunnies are good at hiding pain doesn’t mean their tolerance of it is immense. Please insist on being given pain meds.

When I had my female spayed and I queried pain relief I was told that they don’t usually give them as they’re not needed (apart from a pain relief injection) but I could always go back for some if I felt it was necessary. I wasn’t happy with this so I just asked for some metacam when I picked her up. I didn’t want to wait to see that she was in pain, I wanted to prevent it! Not sure why so many vets don’t automatically prescribe them. A spay is so invasive.

Edit: Sorry just realised this was really unhelpful but I wanted you to know quite a few vets are like this! I would definitely go back to the vet to get pain meds.
