        Hi,

I am new to this site, but I’m glad I found it. My bunny Bella was spayed today and I am a bit concerned for her. When I brought her home she wouldn’t eat as I might have expected but she has been gradually having a little bit of hay. Her bowel movents seem to be normal. The thing that alarmed me was that when I checked up on her there was a puddle of blood or maybe bloody urine. I left her in a small bathroom with her cage so that she could have more room to lay down but it is still confined. I’m not sure if she may have moved too much or urinated. I also saw her licking the insition earlier. I checked her tummy to see if there was any traces of blood but i saw none. She seems fine now just laying in her cage but is this something common or something i should be concerned about?

        Alexis

Hi Alexis and welcome. Certain dietary changes can cause red or orange urine. If it is blood it will usually separate from the urine in blotches. Blood is not normal in urine and take her to the vet ASAP if that is what it is. Have you ever noticed her pee red or orange before?

You want to make sure she doesn’t irritate the incision as it might become infected, or worse, she could break open the incision. If you find she won’t leave it alone, I would call the vet and they may recommend placing a cone on her so it can heal. Since she seems to be acting O.K. and there were no traces of blood, she is eating and pooing O.K. I would keep a close eye on her to see if it happens again. If so, give the vet a call. Did the vet prescribe any pain meds?

i have no experience with rabbit spays to know what’s normal (ie: blood in unrine?) but i encourage you to call your vet and check this out with them.  after my rabbit’s surgery to have a mass removed she was left with a 3inch incision and i was told to watch for redness, swelling or discharge.  how is she now?

edited to add…  by the time i posted this scarlet_rose had already given you some great advice.  perfect!  i hope it helps & all is well with you & bun.  let us know how its going!

My bunny was a bit lethargic for a few days after her spay and it took her a while to start eating again, it is a pretty major surgery for a bunny to go through. The important thing is to try to get her to eat because you don’t want her to go 24h without eating. Some of the other member’s suggested articles probably offer suggestions. Good luck with her and keep us informed on how she is doing!

                Hey,

Thank you for everyone the adivice. I called the vet and brought Bella in. The vet was concerned b/c she told me during the surgery she had a vessel that bled but it stopped. She was worried it may have started bleeding again internally. I brought Bella there and she seems to be fine. There were no signs of internal bleeding and Bella has started eating. The vet gave me different pain meds to sedate her alittle so she wont lick or chew her insition. she had been licking at it alot last night. So now I am just keeping a close eye on her.

                Thanks again,

                Alexis

Alexis – welcome! I’m glad you called your vet and brought her in, it’s always better to be cautious in these kinds of situations.
What a relief that there’s no internal bleeding! Sending lots of healing wishes her way…

I am glad things turned out ok, it’s always better to take them back to the vet than risk any going wrong.
