This is a mix of OT and bunnyish so I didn’t know where to put it

We’re trying to compost and have been just tossing the wood pellet dust into the pile instead of separating out the poops. It’s working somewhat, the stuff underneath the first foot or so has lots of red worms and seems to be doing what its supposed to, but the wood to waste ratio is bad, there is so much wood! So I’ve been trying to thing of another option besides putting a screen on the litter (even if I could buy one, my litter box is a huge under the bed rubbermaid and I haven’t found one that would fit that). Any ideas?

I just use a litter screen I made myself to keep the droppings on top and the wood pellets just get the urine, makes it so much easier to clean the litter box plus it keeps it cleaner longer and my rabbits like it better. Hardware cloth at home depot, cutters, file sharp ends and bend them down so they’ll be on the bottom. Fits any sized litter box, since you make it yourself. Like $10 total for me to make 3 and have left over hardware cloth, which I turned into a magazine holder.

If you’re wanting to toss everything in there, I would imagine a paper litter would break down faster.

You’ll want to use the galvanized stuff. Easier to work with plus flexes better under the bunnies feet.

S&LH what else do you add to the compost? ie. dry leaf matter, green clippings?

You can use bunny poo direct without composting btw. : )

Rabbit poo on its own is supposed to be a good fertiliser.

I use carefresh as a litter for my buns and apparently that is 100% compostible, even though I haven’t tried it.

I’m just starting to compost, we were throwing the whole box in but that sawdust wont break down for nothing. So we’re going to start again, with our vegis and whatnot. I’m too cheap for carefresh >.<
I have read I can put bunny poo straight on, with the amount those bunnies poop I figured I could do a little of both

I use WSP and haven’t had a problem with composting. I don’t try for “hot composting” or anything technical, I just look for it to break down and get some worms in there. The wood is actually really good for your compost – some people recommend putting rotting branches or things in your garden soil, so WSP are similar.

It could just be a ratio thing, I’m starting this square foot gardening thing, and it says sawdust can be 10% of the material, where as its currently about 90% hah.

I use a layer of aspen shavings under a layer of coastal hay in my litterboxes, then just use it to mulch around the shrubs and my garden instead of putting it in the compost bin. The plants just grow like crazy and I have several gardeners who are always asking for it.

Just for fun a couple of years ago, I posted that I had a large yard bag full of it on Freecycle and within the hour had 52 requests for it. I traded out with a lady who had weeping willows in her yard and would cut me some during the year. The buns thought it was great.
