Hey guys,
Comet got neutered today and we just got him home about an hour ago. He is pooping and he has eaten a little bit of parsley, a few nibbles of hay and a few nibbles of the alphalpha hay I got him to encourage him to eat. He seems to be okay, other than a little groggy from the meds. I also have pain meds for him that she gave me a few doses of for the next couple days. My question is…is it normal for the vet to give them a bath after surgery? I guess they did and Kc didn’t ask when he picked them up (he thought it must be standard). He is almost all dry, just damp here and there which is making him groom himself a lot. Is it okay? Normal that they gave him a bath? I was just a little concerned since I thought these were pretty stressful and a surgery is already stressful!
I know with other animals if there was alot of bleeding or the brown stuff they whipe all over them is not got for the animal to digest (eg licking it off to groom themselves) then they would. I would also think that it would be more of a sponge bath then a full bath bath and also would have been down while they where still 90% out of it but I will wait to see what other said. I know they gave both my dogs baths after they where done.
my boy didnt get a bath afterwards – i wouldnt have thought giving him a bath was a good idea
It may have been to wash of some iodine or that he soiled himself after coming around. Another thought is maybe he was housed near another rabbit that sprayed him? I would rather they cleaned him up then send him home soiled. He was likely pretty groggy and accepted the bath ok. Was it just an area bathed or all of him? Good to hear he’s recovering nicely!
Well, he just got his first dose of pain meds (in mushed up banana). He ate most of the little mush pile so I think that’s a good sign. He’s really not eating much though and it’s making me very nervous. How soon should he have his apetite back a little? Also he’s licking himself a lot down there, I don’t know if it’s more from the bath (which I still am not sure was a good idea and I may call them tomorrow and ask…) or if it’s because of the surgery or a little of both. I’m just so nervous something is going to be wrong
……
We must have posted at the same time Jersey- I really can’t tell if it’s an area bath or all over. He’s dry everywhere but his lower half but that took longer to dry when I bathed him too, so I don’t know. I’m mostly scared that he isn’t eating much yet.
Totally normal for them not to have much of an appetite for the 1st day. The meds can sometime depress the appetite a bit too. It’s good he ate something – be careful not to feed things he hasn’t had before though. Just let him lie low for a while – I’m sure his appetite will start to return by tomorrow.
Well he gets banana as a treat on occasion, but I’ve never given the alphalpa hay before. I only gave him a teeny bit trying to encourage him to eat. He had a nibble and has left it. Should I take the rest of the small amount I gave out?
But thanks Jesrsey, makes me feel better that I should only expect him to eat a little today.
Sorry, I’d added to my post above not realising you’d replied. I guess just offer what is familiar to him. He mightn’t eat the hay because it’s strange to him/ or because of his appetite. Maybe leave him a small amount of pellets and greens he normally has so he has something nearby when he feels up to it.
Haha already done…I have created a buffet line for him when he’s ready. Fresh timothy hay, teensy bit of alphalpha hay, some of his favorite veggies, and the rest of the little banana mush pile from his meds.
Glad to hear he’s come through his neuter okay! ((((((((feel better soon, Comet!)))))))))
Hm…dunno about the bath. Maybe when he woke up he rolled over into something messy and they had to spruce him up before they returned him to you?
My guess would be that he did not have an “all over” bath- but did get a butt bath. If he was waking up from anesthesia and urinated and got some on the towel he was bundled in- that could get urine on him.
It is important to keep pets warm as they are waking up from anesthesia and anesthsia interferes with their ability to regulate their own body temperature. Where I work- we try to keep them on a blanket/towel (the cages have grate bottoms) but leave their hind end over the edge of the towel so they will stay clean if they pee. But if he moved while he was waking up, or any other number of reasons it might have been necessary to rinse him. So even though we try to account for the fact that they might urinate- it can still happen.
I don’t know about the bath either, I may call tomorrow and ask them. He’s eating a little more and being more active since he got his pain meds! I am hoping so hard that he has no complications!! Thanks for the vibes!
Thanks Katnip! Good to know
Comet was looking okay this morning and was waiting for his breakfast! He didn’t eat it all but he did eat quite a few of his veggies, although not as much hay (which my buns usually eat the most of over night). When should he have his full appetite back?
Males bounce back quicker then females, and some are themselves the day of. But when they are done their pain meds is when they are really back to normal.
As long as he’s eating and moving around, thats good stuff ![]()
*Update*
Comet seems to be doing really well. The incision looks good and he is almost acting like his usual self. His appetite is still not at normal but he is eating a good deal of hay, and all of his veggies, and some pellets. So I’m not too worried. He has also gobbled up the banana mush and pain meds both times, and has only one more dose of that tonight. He has been fairly active, but is still a little sleepier than usual, which I think is normal too.
He and Chubs have been SO affectionate since he got home. They are mutually grooming through the gate really frequently! I tried to get a video but they seem to know what I’m doing and stop every time I get my camera…
Haha. Little stinkers. I know the hormones take a while to leave the system, and that Comet needs time to fully heal butttt how soon can I try putting them together again??? They seem to want to be near each other, sleeping near each other, just hanging out near each other…grooming a lot. So how long must I wait?? I am impatient…![]()
Were they bonded before the snip? If so then you shouldn’t separate them. If not (and I think the may both be males?) then you would want to wait a week to let Comet heal.
Id give him at least a week to heal before putting them together. Are you still rotating cages and litterboxes?
The bunny butt bath would be normal if he peed during surgery (or recovery) and also to wash off the iodine. Since he was still damp when you picked him up my guess would be that it was because he got messy in the recovery cage.
Samson was very picky and a bit out of it the first night home. By the next day though he was back to normal, eating like crazy and wanting to zoom all around.
Hope Comet feels better soon!!!
Sarita- No they weren’t bonded before the neuter because although they get along really well, Comet was very humpy which would eventually get on Chubs’s nerves, understandably! They have never shown aggression to each other though and have been so sweet to one another lately that I’m hoping and thinking that the bond will be very very easy once the hormones go away!
Rachel- My vet actually called me yesterday to ask how Comet was doing. (which I thought was lovely! Is it standard?) I asked about the bath and she said he did pee on himself during surgery and mentioned the iodine thing, so you were all right about that.
Anyways, all is well and I will be anxiously waiting until Monday to try a bathtub session. (If he’s still very humpy, I’ll wait longer I suppose, but it’s worth a try when they’re being so darn cute and sweet to each other!)
Great to hear he’s doing so well. It really seems as if the boys are bonded. If Chubs isn’t aggressive toward Comet about the humping then that’s super. How does he deal with him? Just to be safe, let Comet heal – but I say try them together a full day after healing. Mounting etc can be something that will continue always but if the other rabbit deals with it well then it’s no biggy for it to occur.
New pic! I think it’s sfae to say he’s feeling much better! He was begging for carrots tonight and look at the adorable picture I got!!
Hehe
Such a cutie <3 *bunnynaps Comet*
Jersey- I think all the humping on Comet’s part is almost fully hormonal. He is so docile that I see Chubs being the dominant of the two for sure once they are a pair. He was relentless but he was neutered yet so it was to be expected. Chubs would tolerate it very well for a while, and after eh got fed up he would give him a good nip, but that’s as much as it ever progressed. I think they will bond very easily as soon as he’s healed! Chubs can be territorial though so we’ll be starting neutral and testing the waters first. Also, how long do poop wars continue once they bond?
Monkey- *Bunnynaps Comet back and takes Monkey for good measure!*
Muahahaha
