My partner and I both got new jobs so it meant that we’d be out of the house for most of the day. We were worried that our 10 month old bunny Colin would be lonely so resolved to get him neutered and get him a new friend. We got Bessie, a 2 month old female. We couldn’t believe how quickly they bonded. Bessie was very submissive so Colin didn’t see her as a threat and it was only a matter of days before they were grooming each other. Now they’re the best of friends. I was worried about introducing such a young rabbit to a mature rabbit. But it worked. Is it generally inadvisable to do this? What are other people’s experiences?

My 2 bunnies are about 3 years and between 6months-1year. When I was first adopting Wally (to bring home as a friend to bond with Noelle), the rescue volunteers warned me that because he might be a bit on the younger side (they guessed he was around 6 months), sometimes 2 bunnies will unbond as they mature or something to that effect. My vet said he was probably more like 1 year old, so I’m hoping it won’t be a problem for me. So based on what the rescue volunteers were telling me, when Bessie hits adolescence and starts getting hormones and all of that fun stuff – the buns might reject each other – and you’d have to get Bessie spayed, let her hormones calm down, and start the bonding process over again.

            welcome here!

so colin is neutered NOW right? just want to make sure, i was a little unclear on your description… the only problem you are likely to have is when Bessie reaches sexual maturity (anytime betw/ 4 and 8 months for a female) they might start fighting and need to be separated and re-bonded after the spay and healing time. my suggestion is to get her spayed right when when the vet feels comfortable doing it, usually about 6 months, and you may be able to skip the aggression phase all together. be prepared that at the first sign of territorial or aggressive behavior on her part, they will need to be separated. so don’t get rid of your second cage and extra bunny supllies just yet.

I think ADEE had something like this happen with her two.  They loved each other and then when hormones started flaring they started fighting and she came home to a bloody cage and two unhappy buns!  But, if I remember right once Abbie was spayed they were able to bond again really quickly and without issue.

I bonded a young male to my female bunny – it was probably about the same age gap for my bunnies. The boy was probably around 6 months when we got him, and we immediately brought him to the vet to get neutered. We introduced them after the surgery and they had love at first sight I do think there is something about younger buns that helps them to bond easier. Juli and Kramer haven’t really had any spats since they bonded – although sometimes Kramer wants to “play” more than Juli does and really harasses her. She just grunts and ignores him
