Hi all! Long time no post…

Quick question… I know extreme heat is bad for bunnies, but what about cold? Horton lives outside, in a safe area, and I am wondering if he can stay out through winter. I live in GA and he seems to be loving the cooler weather! His coat is already getting thicker.

I appreciate your response, hope everyone is doing well!

i’m not sure if you’ve mentioned before when you first joined, but why does he live outside rather than in the house? is there any particular reason…? allergies maybe?

i’m not familiar with GA weather, what are the winters like?  what is your set-up like?  pictures would be helpful if you have them.

It probably depends on the set up, GA is pretty mild though so I think it’d be better then up North or something.  However, I know up here in North Carolina we still get some weather that’s pretty nasty and chilly and I wouldn’t feel comfortable having one of my buns outside like that.  If it’s your only option I’m sure you can make it work and that he’d be ok…but I think he’d be happier coming inside…at least at night when the sun goes down and the chill sets in.

How cold does it get in Georgia? If your bunny has to stay outside, can you buy straw bales and set them all around the hutch? It’s a great insulator! I wouldn’t do electric heat because of the fire hazard. Keep snuggly blankies in there and keep an eye to see how she’s coping with the temps.

How warm do you need to keep your house if you have a rabbit (house rabbit) in the house for cold weather (Pa.) Any help would be great.

Nanny- I believe you can feel their ears like you do someones forehead. If his ears are cold, he will be too. But im not positive

I would think if its warm enough for you it’s warm enough for them! (I mean so long as you don’t wear a winter jacket in the house ) What temp are you thinking of keeping the house at?

                    Welcome by the way!

you don’t want warmer than 80 degree, i believe the bottom of that scale is 60 degrees (Farenheit). bunnies can live comfortably in cooler temperatures than most people, but they should still be kept away from drafts (open doors/leaky windows). basements in winter are probably not a great idea unless they are very well-insulated. if you keep your home pretty consistent thruout the year, that should be fine. i agree, that if you’re comfortable wearing a sweater or robe, they should be as well.

Somewhere I read that rabbits are most comfortable between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, but I don’t remember where.

I would think that in a place like Georgia, you would have to consider the humidity and rain as well. To me there is nothing worse than a cold wet wind. Besides drafts can weaken a rabbit’s immune system, and cause them to succumb to illnesses.

I remember mentioning to the people at the CO-HRS that I keep my house between 62 & 68 (Fahrenheit) most of the time in the winter – they said that was great!
