Coat Colors

Hello!

This is definitely not an urgent question, just something I’ve been wondering…

I got my bunny, Hermione, about 3 1/2 weeks ago and when I got her she was a very dark blueish/black color (more blue than black). We’re not sure what breed she is because the feed store where I got her was very unspecific about it, she could have been anything from a dwarf to a Flemish, (though she’s much too large to be a dwarf). 

As I said, when I got her she had a very dark black/blue coat but every day since I’ve been watching her closely and her coat has become more and more brown! Now she’s a very beautiful brown/black and becoming more brown every day. But here’s the weird part, she’s not losing any hair, like, at all. There’s very little shedding (if any) so it must be the actual hair color changing. I’m not sure if it’s related to any health problems or anything or if it’s normal, though I’ve never heard of it before. 

Just wondering! Any and all feedback welcome and appreciated!

Not sure if it’s age-related (someone else may know), or moreso the result of moulting, but Wick sprouts white fur along his back sometimes. As he got older, the white stripe along his left shoulder (see my avatar) went from solid to becoming two parts because he was growing into his coat and a black separation came out of nowhere in the middle of the stripe.

Perhaps it’s a result of something similar?

My bun was blue as a baby, then after his first light molds he turned blacker and blacker I think it has to do with the structure of baby-fur versus adult-fur. Buns are also infamous for changing fur color at random, so it can be expected to have a full or partial colour coat change after a big molt

Is your bunny indoor or out? Much sun shining on where bunny is? Like directly in her area or does she lay by a window in the sun ?
Black and blue fur can turn brown from the sun
Or it could be that she is moulting and intaking the fur in grooming and that’s why you aren’t noticing shedding
How old is bun? At around 4-6 months old they do a big moult whichever usually makes the colour and texture change to their adult coat from baby coat then every 3-6 months ( depending where you live ) you’ll find she sheds – sometimes less obvious than other times

She’s 4 and a half months and she’s an indoor bunny. They don’t get much/any direct sunlight but I placed their GIGANTIC cage so that they get lots of natural light. (Seriously. It’s HUGE). It sounds like she might be a sable or similar colour. Sables tend to start with more of a blue colour tone and then change to brown as they progress through their coats

No, I think she’s much too dark to be sable but yesterday I noticed a definitely white patch growing on her shoulder. Just a couple of hairs but they were definitely white. Maybe she could lighten up, I don’t know? Thanks for all your guys’s replies! Any more replies appreciated, I love to read different opinions!

Sables can be quite dark. Can you post pictures? It will help us guess, plus bunny pictures are the best

I know the changed profile picture is confusing but bare with me please.  This is Hermione when I first got her. In the light, she looked very blue. 

This is her now, nearly twice the size and almost bigger than her one year old “sister”, Ginny:

She’s more brown but she’s just as curious and intelligent as when I first got her, though her lack of experience still leads to quite a few mistakes.

Also, anyone wanna take a guess at her breed? I have no clue but she’s already much to big to be any kind of dwarf (she’s almost 5 months if they got her age right at the store) and I’m afraid she may be some type of giant…

Oh goodness, look at those ears. How big is she? I’m going to agree with the sable coloring suggestion. Depending on how big she is, there may actually be some sable breed in there. Her head shape and ears resemble characteristic seen in that breed.

That’s great! Sable rabbits are beautiful and I wanted some color variation, which is why I got her specifically instead of her light brown sister. Thanks all of you for your help and suggestions. Any other replied are still very welcome and appreciated. Extra information is never a waste in my opinion.
