My lionhead’s coat is having weird changes.  I thought she had lost all her baby fuzz, but recently her back fur has totally changed.  Her long wooly fluffy fur is being replaced by shorter, coarser hair.  It looks reallllly weird, and I’m wondering if she’s molting or maybe she’s a mix so this is the other breed in her showing throug? Any ideas…?

It sounds like she is moulting to me – usually the fur does funny things (patterns) during a moult.

She doesnt’ look like a mix to me. Usually with a lionhead being a new breed you really dont’ know how they will turn out.  Also It does sound like she is molting.

She may grow back her wooly skirt and mane.  It may remain thick it may come back in shorter or longer thicker or thinner.  Just depends on her.

Cotton my lionhead shed out his whole skirt once. I had used the furminator and overbrushed him and caused 2 red spots on his belly just under his arms.  (front legs actually)  His skirt grew back in and his rash went away.  I thought I had overbrushed his skirt and it all dissapeared. But fortunately it grew back.

He looks lots better now.  Once yours fills back in she will look better.  They do look odd with a full blown molt.

I have done a lot of studying and research on lionheads. I just love them.

They lose alot of the fluff so that they retain fluff around their head and feet (like a skirt)

The skirt… does that stay and then their back is shorter hair?

                Thanks guys.

Yes that is usually what happens.  the skirt and mane are the long hairs and the back hairs grow in short.  A good website on lionheads is

lionhead rabbit.net  it is very involved but has good pictures of lionheads and lots of pics.

Thanks! That site helped, I found pics which look like what her fur is going through.
