I’m still on the lookout for hay in my area and have found bales of clover and rye mix hay. Is this ok to feed to the rabbist? I’ve found information that suggests that rye is a sweeter hay, so will it make my ‘comfortable’ rabbits fatter?

        Thanks!

I know there’s a rye blend that BB.com sells that Mimzy likes very much. You’d have to look in the store to see what the ‘mix’ is, I think it’s listed. He hasn’t plumped on it though, I think it’s just a nicer fiber content than his 3rd cut timothy.
I wouldn’t know about clover. I would guess you just want to be sure the hay doesn’t have any pesticides or foreign bodies in it.
Someone else here will have more info I’m sure. I’d like to know if clover is okay for rabbits too. Mostly since I’d like to get clover sprouts for them to eat as a change from their boring one-note veggie diet.

Rye is a grass hay so should be good. You don’t want clover to be too much of the content though – that’s more of a treat. I think the majority of meadow hay is rye.

Out of curiosity, what hays have you feed before?  I thought once you mentioned you got old of some timothy hay here.   If so, where was that? I’ve found it really difficult to find. I’d like to sample it (well the rabbits can) one day.

Thanks MM- I was worried about them plumping up 🙂

JG – I’ve fed them oaten and meadow before. The timothy I’m getting now looks good but is hardly value for money. It’s the oxbow and it’s costing me $20 for 475g…which lasts the buns roughly 3 days. It’s far too expensive for me to consider continuing feeding them it as a staple. As a treat it’ll be ok though.

So the clover and rye is good because it’s free delivery and only $20 a bale…but if I can’t feed them it I’ll continue looking for oaten for the spoilt brats.

ps JG – if you want me to send through a bad of the timothy or the botanical let me know 🙂

Oops, I meant “got hold of some timothy” not “got old” Hope you understood that. Oxbows the only tim hay I’m aware of – and yes it’s expensive. I had thought you found someone who grew it here? Oh well. It as rare as hens teeth I tell you!
