I clean my rabbits cage twice a week, and the cage still stinks. By the time I clean it, it smells like a zoo in there. Is there anything I can do about this?

Well I clean mine every day.  I sweep up all the stray hay and any veggie mess I clean that up with Nature’s Miracle.  I also completely dump the litter box daily.  I never have any smell at all. Is your bun peeing outside of the litterbox? What’s your setup?  You have to be more vigilent in cleaning if you are noticing a smell.

I clean mine twice a day every day and I have 10 rabbits. You do have to pick up and clean daily. I do not do litter boxes but once a week with so many and mine still does not smell like a zoo. Mine only takes me 30 to 45 minutes at a time so with one you should be able to tidy up very quickly.

What type of litter are you using?

Sarita – Have you ever posted pics of your clan?  I’d love to see them!  Yes, good question on what kind of litter you are using.  I use wood stove pellets and it’s great.  I do put a layer of hay over them just to keep little feet dry.  I did try Carefresh and did not like it all.  It seemed gooey when wet and there was kind of a gross wet paper smell.

i clean the enclosures every day too.  i only dump litter pans when they need it (usually every second day because they’re small) but i sweep or vacuum the levels plus wipe up any spills everyday.  i only spend maybe 15 mins / day doing this but it really helps keep things smelling fresh.

i used to have bigger litter pans which took more effort to empty & wash.  i realized the the buns really only went in one corner / end anyways so i turned the litter boxes (lowest level) into hay boxes & put small 9″x9″ dollar store plastic containers with litter pellets in them in the area where the buns usually did their business.  they caught on right away.  so now only poops end up mixed in the hay & all the pee  plus some poops are n the litter pans which are real easy to whip out, dump out & clean.

the bun’s room really only smells of hay.

I don’t have a seperate litter box for him, he usually just goes in the corner of his cage….I guess it’s better to have a box that he can go in….eekkk…you all probably think I’m a bunny torturer or something..thanks though

try getting just a small litterbox. it doesn’t need to be fancy. you can get a small cat litterbox for less than 5 bucks. make sure it’s big enough for him to lay down in (for some reason they like to lounge in the litterboxes…) put it in his “chosen corner” and it will make it so much easier to clean up. if you notice it still smells, you might want to dump the litterbox 3 times a week instead of two. and like K&K asked… what type of litter or bedding are you using now?

I know I’m not supposed to endorse a product, but I use Yesterday’s News (the cat version, because it comes in larger quantities than the bunny version, and is cheaper, and Lizzy doesn’t eat the pellets, so I don’t see a problem) in the litter box, and I have no smell-issues.  Also, there’s no dust or anything.  I use a plastic grocery bag as a glove and pick out the obvious messes and wet spots once a day, and dump the boxes and clean the whole cage once a week…

Seems to work great for me…

                        I can’t imagine not having a litter box…really, it’s fabulous! (I got a rescue-bunny that was already litter-box-trained, so I’m spoilt!)

many people use Yesterday’s News. and the cat version is nice b/c it’s the same thing as the small animal, but cheaper! that’s a great idea using a bag to scoop out the yucky parts. does your bun only go in one corner of the box? mine only pee in one corner, but they leave poops everywhere in the box. i am going to need to re-evaluate my litter choices. i’m going thru a 40 pound bag of pressed paper pellets a month. that’s 25 bucks a month… and vet nails trims… 32 bucks a month… possibly getting pet insurance… 24 bucks a month… veggies… astronomical… cannot calculate.

                          bunnies are ‘spensive!

                            lol beka!

thats why i put small plastic ontainers in one end of the ‘hay boxes’… smaller container to put litter pellets into & so i can change frequently and waste less pellets.  the whole hay box gets littered with poops but they’re not stinky & so i only empty that & the hay bits maybe once or twice a week.  i find i need to do it more often in the warmer weather.

Bun Bun:  I love your set up!  Perfect for your unbonded beasts (they are unbonded right, bun bun & pinkie?)

I clean out my fresh veggie mess every morning.  I vacuum or sweep out the rag rugs & seagrass mats when they get poopy…they usually don’t get peed on.  I have 2 litterboxes.  I use newspaper on the bottom, bird wood pellets & cover w/ carefresh.  I usually do a complete litterbox dump every 2-3 days.  I don’t think my cage is all that stinky, but they mostly use the litterbox.

If he really only uses one corner, it s/b pretty easy to litterbox train him.  Is your bunny fixed?  If they aren’t their pee can be extra stinky!

Definately a litterbox & some bunny-safe litter sound like they are in order. I use Aspen Supreme and if you use it in a 50/50 ratio with Yesterday’s News it really helps with smell too. I assume your bun is fixed?
