Has anyone ever experienced a bunny’s claw getting pulled out? It was Baby’s right paw the 5th nail (sorta like a thumb not in line with the other claws but up about 1 inch up from the rest). We were cutting her nails with clippers and she wiggled to get away catching her paw claws in my husband’s shirt and when we moved her back into position to continue cutting that weirdly placed claw got caught in his shirt and came completely out. It did show a little blood where the nail was. Of course she won’t let me near her to check it —she is normally never handled and is not cage kept – she is confined to a bedroom while we work (bedroom is like her cage) and then has free run of the house when we are home, and she responds to most verbal commands. She is hopping on it normal BUT WHEN SITTING STILL AND UPRIGHT, SHE HOLDS THAT PAW UP. I’m wondering how many days I should give it before taking her to the vet. Any suggestions, this just happend 2 days ago. I’ve not treated it since I thought anything applied to it would sting or burn. Please note that I obsess over this little bunny and she is like a daughter to me (i have no children so she is my only child) —-thanks.

oooh. ouch. poor bun! i would make an appt for the vet for this afternoon. she may seem okay now, but these things only seem to become a problem over the weekend when you’re only option is a more expensive emergency vet. i’d definitely take her today.
Yes take her to the vet! You do not want that to become infected. It’s better to nip things in the bud especially with the weekend coming! Good luck.
yes she will probably need to go the vet just incase as it may of bled and could become infected
Ouchies! Yup the vet is the best idea, especially if you can’t get near it…In the mean time, I would try to spritz some peroxide on it…Does anyone else think that’s a good idea? (I’m a big fan of peroxide)
Taking her to vet later today. Will post what the vet says and does for her later today. Poor little sweet thing!
Thanks –Bunnymama
(((vibes))) thanks for the update
Yes thanks for keeping us posted! *HUGS* for you and *Vibes* for baby
awe what a rough accident poorlittle girl. yes keep us updated. there was a baby bun beautiful little girl at pet store if I had the $ I would have bought her had her nail torn out too. someone bought her she went fast. I hope they took her to the vet too. yes glad you are such a caring bun mommy so is your little girl it must hurt.she will be glad you took care of her so quickly
I assume that it was not bleeding everywhere, however it sounds like she is in pain. If you could, daub some triple antibiotic ointment (without pain killer) on it and keep an eye on her. The peroxide would need to be diluted if you used it. I know it is very startling when it happens and she should be O.K. If anything worsens, then take her to the vet. However, since you have already scheduled an appointment, keep us updated and let us know what they say.
Update on Baby who had her claw pulled out- vet said it was broken off and he could feel and see where some of the very tip of claw was still in tact. He said it should grow back and that it didn’t look infected.
3 weeks ago I had her to the same rabbit savvy vet for an eye infection. Please allow me to share what I have learned about this. She has sort of “pink eye” where her eye was red and she was scratching it, then it got a little swollen around the outside. It became tear-eee. Final got really red, became half closed and she had white flaky stuff around the outside and on her lashes. We had to give her eyedrops twice a day for 7-10 days.
The vet said eye problems are common in rabbits. Almost anything could have caused it. Something in the air or in her hay or really anything. So in addition to the paw issue when I came home from work and saw her at lunch, the eye thing was starting up again so I took her in. He flushed her tear duct and said alot of bunnies just have sensitive tear ducts and might have to have this done periodically. Poor little girl is not happy with her bunnymama right now. More drops twice a day.
Thanks to everyone who replied – I love this website and all of your support.

Poor little Baby. At least she has a good mom to look after her. Glad you took her to the vet! At least you have a piece of mind now.
I’m glad you were able to get her in, especially since she was having eye problems again. Just keep an eye on her toe, should be fine, but you want to be on top of it so as to notice if an infection settles in.
Regarding the eye stuff – Rucy has constant eye drainage due to jaw abscess surgeries that caused scar tissue which causes tear duct blockage. If it wasn’t for my other bunny, Jack, who cleans her eyes daily, I would have to take a warm compress and wipe her drippy eyes dailly.
If her eye irritation keeps happening, have your vet check her teeth. Sometimes ongoing eye problems can also be sign of discomfort due to teeth issues. (even if it is just one eye). Hopefully you vet checked that anyway…just in case. Most rabbit savvy vets would.
Some bunnies have clogged eye ducts and what can happen is the extra tears cause irritation around the eye, which can cause loss of fur and discomfort. So if she is still teary eyed be sure to wipe the area around her eyes with a soft moist cloth to help rid the area of the irritating salty tear liquid.
Also, if she continues to have this, she may need to be on antibiotics, like Baytril. Did she have any nose discharge too?
Sending out healing vibes to your bunny! Keep us updated
Thanks Binky bunny for the follow up. The vet did check her teeth and throat and felt her whole body and belly for a few minutes. He does seem very good with her. She becomes a rag doll at his touch which makes me and my husband sick because for us she is always a wild indian trying to get away. She had no nose discharge and wasn’t sneezing either. The vet told me if she is too warm she might start to sneeze and that she should prefer temps between 60-70 degrees so that is where we try and keep the temps for her in our house. Last night her eye looked awful and gave we her the drops -this morning you can hardly tell anything was wrong with that eye so I think the tear duct flush might have done the trick. Thank goodness.
By the way binky do you have that 3 story card board castle avaiable any more? Baby has one and loves it ! You can always find her in the 2nd story but because she is constantly biting and chewing it I’m afraid it will wear out pretty soon. Thanks for letting me know.
Take care bunny slaves and have a good day…..every day is a good day when you are a bunny parent!
Bunnymama
glad it all worked out ok and you have found a good vet! we need pics though!!
BunnyMama – regarding the castles – I don’t sell them anymore because just couldn’t get a decent wholesale price to make it worthwhile, (without raising the price and that made it harder to sell) but you can get them directly at BunnyLuv.com
we still need UK shipping… lol
Bunnymama, I am glad you took her in for the eye. I am sorry to hear about that. Sometimes rabbits when they are afraid will go to mush on a vet and yet will tussel with you. It’s not necessarily because the vet has a magic touch. Best to you and glad you enjoy our site!
So glad to hear it was a broken nail, not pulled out.
Spockie had an occasionally blocked tear duct his whole life. The vets gave me an ointment in a tube, ( One kind was called Vetropolycin HC), which I squeezed out two drops into the corner of his eye about twice a day as needed. It would turn to liquid from there as it warmed up with his body heat and get to the right place even if he wiped at it. It was great stuff, and worked to clear up the excess tearing in about 2 days or less. He only needed it every several months or much longer.
P.S. He was diagnosed and this ointment was perscribed in 2003. The vet turned out the lights, and looked into his eyes with this rectangular instrument that had a blue light. Very cool. Has anyone else seen a vet use this? She was able to see well into his eye area. Not sure what the blue light showed, but her diagnosis was spot on.
i have never heard of a bunyn with a blocked tear duct.. you learn something new everyday huh? hows ur bun doing now? all back to its perky self i suspect ![]()
rabbitpam, a vet did the same thing for Daffodil because we were trying to narrow down her weepy eye to allergies or blocked tear duct. She also put some dye in her eye to check for a scratch. Not sure what that tool is called though, but it is cool.
I’m really glad you got her in and it sounds like she is on the mend, guess it was a good thing that he was able to look at her eye again too.
Glad to report that month later that claw did grow back in too.
Thanks for the update!! Very good news to hear ![]()
I assume that bunny eye sensitivity is why rabbits are used in “Draize eye irritancy tests.” So sad!
My cat totally pulled out 2 of his claws. It took months for his paws to be normal. It turned out that they wouldn’t grow in normally b/c he had some kinda of skin condition (can’t remember what it was—I’m sure I’ll remember when I sign off). It was caused by a autoimmune response. It was very difficult to treat and seemed so painful for him. His claws have since grown back and we haven’t had this problem.
I fostered a kitten that had suffered such severe eye herpes, that he tear ducts had to be surgically closed. It was the only way to protect her sight and keep the infections from being chronic.
You are a good bunny mamma!!!!!
That’s great news the claw grew back, we love updates and we’re not left out there hanging.
Very thoughtful of you!
