Cilantro recall under way in 7 states including CA

SALINAS, Calif.—A California food company is voluntarily recalling 6,141 cartons of cilantro in seven states that may be contaminated with salmonella.

Salinas-based Pacific Cilantro said Friday the Food and Drug Administration found salmonella in a sample of their herbs.

No illnesses have been reported. The cilantro is being recalled as a precaution.

The cilantro, also known as coriander, was distributed in California, Arizona, Massachussetts, New Jersey, Indiana, South Carolina and Missouri through retailers.

Consumers are advised to return cilantro purchased after Nov. 16 and before Dec. 10.

The cilantro was grown by Salt River Farming in the Phoenix-area.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal illness in children, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems.

Each bunch has “Pacific” on the twist tie and the UPC code 33383 80104

It could be that the birds infected the cilantro… AZ has experienced an intense cold front and the vegetation has taken a beating and so farmers have taken very good care of their crops and birds have taken notice, I wouldnt be surprised to know if there may be more foods that my eventually be on the recall list with this crazy cold front. That bird poo is a good vector for salmonella to get in the soil or on the leaves and contaminate the vegetable. If someone did buy cilantro from the store, yes throw it out. Unfortunately, we cant exactly boil it and feed it to our babies, that would kill the salmonella, but our buns wouldnt appreciate soggy cilantro.

Also for others, the bun owners, tis the season, and the season calls for baking. Dont eat the cookie dough!!!!!! There has been an E. coli outbreak in the premade cookie doughs. In my perspective, E. coli is much more dangerous than salmonella. For young children, those with weak immune systems, and the very elderly are extremely susceptible and can be fatal to them.

And just a word of caution, we have done studies and just always make sure to wash everything you eat… even those ready to eat salads, the prepackaged ones, cause they do contain bacteria, and the packaged baby carrots, ohhhh yes, they have bacteria too. Oh and let me tell you about those little white sprouts!!! Never eating those again! Found colonies of E. coli on those!

The cookie dough recall was for nestle toll house, because of the flour. Honestly though, every food contains bacteria and even the vegetable washes don’t get it all (proven via studies), can’t be scared of everything.

Thanks for the recall warning, my state isn’t on it, but maybe I will skip the cilantro this week anyway since a neighboring state is.

I got that warning this morning from the Rabbitwise Yahoo group that I belong to. Since I’m in one of the affected states, South Carolina, I contacted my fellow volunteers who have rabbits, to warn them about it. I don’t remember ever seeing Pacific cilantro in the stores where I shop. I was getting ready to start using a new bunch of cilantro today that I bought on Thursday, and I was pretty sure of the brand, which is a SC grown product, but I was paranoid and I went out and got the trash bag out of the garbage can so that I could check the label. It was the local brand, just like I thought. So that was a relief. They do sometimes have other brands and if I get cilantro at another store, it’s an organic brand from California. From now on, I’m going to keep the label or twist tie that comes with the veggies, so I will know exactly what brand I have.

I wonder why news of this recall is just now getting out since the first date mentioned is November 16? That’s almost a month ago. I buy cilantro every week and I shudder to think that I could have been buying contaminatied products. The FDA needs to get this information out to the public quicker than they did.

I sure hope that no rabbits were affected by the cilantro.

The problem is, is that the tests for e. coli and salmonella and all that run about a week or more and big plants that ship thousands of pounds worth of product cant hold their product for a week or their revenue would drop significantly. So what happens, is if a product is contaminated, it has already been shipped out days to weeks in advance and the USDA cant catch the shipments in time so they just warn the public. But soon that will change. USDA is making it so that the product has to stay in the plant until the test results come back… this is just a possibility, not totally certain yet.

This freaks me out. I’ve heard of this happening several times and I always worry now when I buy Cilantro.
