My rabbits live in a pen, but there are lots of other good options out there.

Our rabbit pen is actually two pens connected into a 4×8 foot rectangle.

Both pens are Midwest brand walk-through pens, 36 inches tall.

I go also agree that there are other options that work well. Pens are the best option for us, but our rabbits weren’t jumpers and we don’t have dogs or cats to worry about getting in there.

Pens are one option of many good options for bunnies.

I don’t know. When I say pens I mean NICs, XPens, those types of things. I really never had a better rabbit habitat than a pen. One type of habitat I will never invest my money in is a storebought cage for a rabbit. The size of these are usually maximum 40 inches by 13 inches. We have two “large” rabbit cages that we use for bunny transporters. They work well for that purpose.

Yes, cages bought in stores are rarely -if ever- big enough.

I have the same set up as you, Beka, with two pens.

NIC cages are also great and take up less space than a pen.

Did you check out the habitat gallery?

I don’t think I would include NICs with Pens. They can be made into pens but the condos are cage type housing. They are versatile. Some people build spacious indoor hutches. Or re-purposed larger cabinets. Free range. Built into other furniture (one member cleverly built a bunny habitat into a bunk bed for space saving reasons. It’s nice and spacious). Ect…

Pens are one good option of many. Really as long as a bunny home is indoors, meets at LEAST the minimum size recommendations, well ventilated, and solid bottomed I think any type/combo of housing can be wonderful.

I just checked out the gallery. My rabbits are out 70% of the day, really, but even so, we still have several NICs and pens they live in. Two buns per habitat. Luna gets her special time out by herself because she isn’t bonded with the others. (She’s fostered by me)

I like pens but they aren’t the only game in town. Obviously if you have a large breed or an elder bun, these are ideal. I’ve had Leith Condo’s as well and really enjoyed those for my smaller younger rabbits.

I have a senior (12 years old) in a pen now – he is just too messy to be free roam and a Netherland who has free roam 100% of the time. It’s ideal for my current situation.

I was the “no” vote – if you define pen as x-pens.  Zeus lives in a run designed for outdoor use that I use in the living room.  X-pens are a nice, inexpensive option… but Zeus really needed a rigid frame, he’s a big bun and ridiculously strong.  I’d be afraid he’d drag an x-pen all over the house, LOL.

Hera lives in a jumbo/giant dog crate.  I would like to get her a cage like Zeus’s, my boyfriend is talking about building her one.

Mine live in a pen next to my bed which takes up about a quarter to a third of my bedroom. I let them out for two – four hours a day, depending on what shift i’m working.

I have to say, I don’t really understand the point in these threads. They’re coming across very preachy as well as stating the obvious.

My boy’s house that we made (I had a picture up in my profile but took it down due to embarrassment, cause everyone else’s looked so great!). Admittedly my boy is free range 24/7 – so his house is just a place for him to hang out knowing we don’t disturb him while he is in there along with his water and hay. Even his food (pellets and veg) is located under the breakfast bar (next to the dogs). So I think it really depends on your actual buns living arrangement? More time out – smaller house? And more time in – bigger house?

How are we defining “pen?” The porch addition to Porky’s condo could be described as a pen, but isn’t made from an xpen, it’s made of grids and is sort of part of his condo.

Chester is kind of a mixed living arrangement. He still has the cage I got him when he was a baby because he loves it so much, but it’s attached to a pen. And since his cage is up on wheels, he has space under the cage (his favourite space to sleep) plus he has “stairs” for him to get up on top of his cage which has a thick blanket on top to chill out on and watch the neighbours out the window. Then that’s attached to a pen for extra binky room. However, whenever I’m home, the pen is opened up and he has free run of the house.
